Vikings running back Michael Bennett dealt with a slew of injuries during the first four years of his career.

So when he is feeling down, he seeks the advice of a former player who knows what Bennett is going through — Robert Smith.

"I really look up to him and I talk to him on occasion,'' Bennett said Saturday.

Smith abruptly retired in 2000 at the age of 28 as the Vikings all-time leading rusher, with millions awaiting him on the free agent market. Before he blossomed into one of the top running backs in the game, however, Smith battled nagging injuries and illnesses, including the chicken pox.

Bennett, who was drafted to replace Smith in 2001, has had similar freak occurrences. He broke his foot two seasons ago while running on a treadmill and he missed considerable time last season after hurting his knee in the preseason.

Talking to Smith helped him learn to cope with the lows of the profession. Smith, known as a very intelligent person who is much more interested in life outside of sports than what happens on the playing field, also gives Bennett advice on other aspects of life.

"He said, 'Just keep your head up, hang in there and be strong. Keep being the person you are and just believe in yourself,''' Bennett said. "That's kind of the mindframe that I take.''

This year, Bennett hopes to follow in Smith's footsteps and put those injury woes behind him.

He entered this weekend's minicamp as the early leader for the starting running back position but is in a stiff competition for the job with Onterrio Smith and Mewelde Moore.

Bennett still struggles to find an answer for why he's had such a hard time with injuries.

"I had never been injured. Even in college, I had one ankle sprain,'' Bennett said. "Then when I get to the pros, it's a whole different level. Hopefully it's all done and I can go out and give them a whole healthy season and go out and win a Super Bowl.''

GREAT MOVE!!!!!!!! I remember the great year Smith had and they talked to him. He said I spent the off season watching tape. And I saw I got hurt everytime I ran the sideline. That season he didnt run the sideline as much and had a great season. I hope Bennett can do the same!!!!!

Free safety Darren Sharper sat down on the eve of his first Vikings minicamp and said Minnesota is the team to beat in the NFC North, a Super Bowl contender and should have a "top-five" defense.

Besides Sharper, the Vikings' new defensive starters include cornerback Fred Smoot, strong-side linebacker Napoleon Harris, tackle Pat Williams and middle linebacker Sam Cowart. Rookie first-round draft pick Erasmus James would be the sixth new starter if he beats out Darrion Scott at left end.

"We can be a top-five defense, no question about it," Sharper said. "Coach Cottrell had the No. 1 defense [in Buffalo in 1999]. And now he has the players here that will allow him to do what he likes to do. We just have to get on the field and start proving it."

You guys have a top 5 defense we will be dancing after the Super Bowl!!!

Vikings: New wannabe owner talks
Randy Furst and Jay Weiner, Star Tribune

Zygmunt Wilf, the New Jersey developer who seems headed toward controlling the Minnesota Vikings, said Saturday that he won't move the team, that he won't reveal his net worth, that he's exploring stadium options and that Reggie Fowler is still his partner.

Breaking his silence after three months of dodging media inquiries, Wilf wouldn't confirm that he is in line to be the general partner of the NFL team, although multiple sources have told the Star Tribune that's the case.

But the 55-year-old lawyer and son of Holocaust survivors spoke like a man eager to own the state's most popular sports team.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Saturday that the league is being kept apprised of the ownership matters.

Fowler's efforts to buy the Vikings have stumbled because he has been unable to come up with the necessary cash to satisfy the NFL's requirement for general partner status. The Star Tribune has reported on Fowler's attempted sale of his aviation business, SATCO, to an unknown Georgia-based financial services company called UBG. That deal hasn't been closed.

Wilf is the chief operating officer of Garden Commercial Properties, a firm that is the 19th-largest manager of retail development properties, according to the April 1, 2005, edition of a Retail Traffic, a business publication.

The privately held company claims to operate 30,000 apartment units. While the family-owned company may be well-financed, the NFL must determine whether Zygmunt Wilf's pockets are deep enough to win approval from NFL owners.

Asked about the value of his company and of himself personally, Wilf declined to give details.

"We have a family business that has operated over 50 years," he said. "I have made it a practice not to discuss financial issues."

Fowler's public reluctance to share details about his personal wealth created questions about his ability to buy the team.

Wilf said that the NFL has reviewed the group's finances.

"We are still in discussion regarding the structure of the group," Wilf said. "The NFL is fully aware of everything."

...

LesPaul

The reported Vikings sale price is $625 million.

Like Fowler, Wilf will need to come up with at least $150 million in cash for his share of the $625 million purchase price.

Other parts of his investment can be borrowed. Wilf has maintained a low profile, even though his company has been a major player in the real estate industry, especially in New Jersey. "He's become very successful with a low-key approach," said Vikings lobbyist Lester Bagley of Wilf's aversion to media coverage and preference for secret meeting. "He would prefer to be in the background. But I keep telling him that becoming an NFL team owner will not exactly put you in the background."

Said Blaine Mayor Tom Ryan: "He pretty much takes control of a meeting. He doesn't monkey around."

Wilf told people last week that he has been a New York Giants fan since he was a little boy and that, in 1969, at age 19, he missed the fabled Woodstock rock festival.

Why?

He attended a Giants preseason game against the Jets in New Haven, Conn. The game was played Aug. 17, 1969, one day before Woodstock ended.

Wilf also told Anoka County officials that he already knew the date that the Giants and Vikings are scheduled to meet this coming season: Nov. 13, in the Meadowlands, not far from his New Jersey home.

"He was already hyped up that the Vikings would beat the Giants," said Steve Novak, the stadium pointman for Anoka County.

Whether Wilf will own the Vikings by November, or at all, may be resolved at NFL owners' meetings in Washington, D.C. May 24 and 25.

he just jinxed the Vikings

I just hope the sale will be approved soon. I am glad Wilf will be the front man too. I wish Reggie would have owned the team, but at least he will have a role. At this point, let's get it done. I am so sick and tired of Red McCombs.

Durango53
05-10-2005, 02:59 PM
Minnesota Vikings owner Red McCombs said Monday he's confident his team will soon be sold to the investor group now headed by New Jersey real estate developer Zygmunt Wilf.

"Sounds like Zyggi's going to be the biggie," McCombs said, chuckling from his San Antonio office. "That's what they're planning right now."

He's serious about this transaction, though, and he expressed no doubt about its completion.

"I expected it to close when we signed, and I still do," said McCombs, who is anticipating the sale to close sometime in June.

"I don't have a drop-dead date," he said.

The deal has been in the works for nearly a year, and the purchase agreement was announced three months ago. At that point, Arizona businessman Reggie Fowler - who could have become the NFL's first black owner - led a group that included four limited partners.

One of those partners was Wilf, who has since assumed the lead role - presumably because Fowler has been unable to raise the money required to be in charge. By league rules, the general partner must have a 30 percent stake in the franchise. McCombs is selling the club for a reported $625 million.

Wilf told the Star Tribune over the weekend that he won't move the team and that Fowler remains part of the group, but he has not done any other interviews. Fowler has not commented since February. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, through his secretary, said there was no timetable for an official announcement regarding the Vikings ownership structure.
Oh Red you are so whitty :barf:

It dont really matter to me just get this done. Love the fact that he said he isnt going to move the team and if the Twins can get there new home pasted I think the Vikings could follow or so I hope.

But funny how none of the new owners or want to be owners have been around and on draft day!!! Got to wonder about that.......

Why didn't they trade this chump when they had a chance????????????????????????

Vikings running back Onterrio Smith was detained last month at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport after police found paraphernalia later identified as a kit used to circumvent drug tests.

Smith was neither arrested nor charged, but as of Tuesday it was unclear whether the incident will affect his status in the NFL's confidential substance-abuse program.

Smith acknowledged to airport police that he was carrying dried urine, along with a device called "The Original Whizzinator" and a bottle of pills labeled "Cleansing Formula." He told police the kit was "for making a clean urine test," according to the police report, and said he was taking the materials to his cousin.

Geez!

Ciatrick Fason could be now the opening day RB.

Smith was caught LAST MONTH with this fake wang. And it is now leaking out. So what do the Vikings do?

If Bennett is healthy he is the starter. As I posted above Bennett wants to stay healthy and is talking to Robert Smith about it. A great guy to follow I feel. But dont forget about Moore also. I think the battle will be for the number two guy. And if Bennett gets hurt then the guy that wins number two will become number one. But also I can see a lot of mix and matching for the Vikings RB again this year if Bennett goes down with the Running the Vikings want to do.

Smith could not be reached for comment. His agents -- Michael Sullivan, Doug Hendrickson and Jeff Sperbeck -- declined to comment. Vikings coach Mike Tice said he was unaware of the incident and had no comment.

According to the police report, a bag Smith was carrying set off security alarms before an April 21 flight. The alarms later were traced to a tube of toothpaste.

The $150 device includes a prosthetic penis attached to a jockstrap and plastic bag. Using a syringe, the user fills the bag with a precisely measured amount of water blended with the urine powder to create a clean sample. When the user takes a drug test in front of an observer, the water is released through the prosthetic with a valve (the instructions recommend the user cough to hide the sound of the valve unsnapping).

If the Vikings dont cut him first. But I am with you Mark. If you got to paste on a fake dong to pass a test then I guess you aint smart enough to make it or dont care to make it in the NFL.

I am really pulling for Moore and Fason also now to.

I am sure that the NFL will suspend him but I would guess it would be for 2 or 3 games. Not long enough for me though.

I am with you on Onterrio, Mark. Enough is enough. If this guy is not mature enough to stay away from drugs, then he shouldn't be on any professional sports team. Bad enough you take drugs, but even worse when you get caught with a kit that helps you pass the test.

they cant suspend him as there is no probable cause since he cant use it in a regular NFL sanctioned test anyways. you have to completely pull your pants down and go pee while someone stands watch. so its pretty hard to use it. :)

Word among NFL agents is that Vikings defensive backs Corey Chavous and Brian Williams could be no-shows when the team's minicamp begins Monday at Winter Park. Attendance isn't mandatory, but most veterans are expected to participate.

Williams, scheduled to be paid $1.43 million next season, isn't thrilled with the team's signing of free-agent cornerback Fred Smoot. Chavous isn't thrilled with his contract, which will pay him $1.9 million next season. Because safety Willie Offord was impressive toward the end of last season, Chavous could end up in a fight for his job.

I wish Williams would have took a page out of Hendersons book. Hey you had a bad year last year. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT THAN *****!!!!!!!!

Shocks me that Chavous might be holding out. To bad on that one. Take one or the other if that is the case and cut the other one I guess. Chavous didnt have a good year last year also and he knows it. So for him to hold out shocks me.

Even without big-play wide receiver Randy Moss, the Minnesota offense still has enough weaponry in its arsenal to rank among the NFL's most potent units. Tice has vowed to get back to the power running game that was such a tremendous complement in 2003, but which was abandoned too easily last season, and by nature that should aid the defense.

I dont think Tice was all that mad to see Scott go. I think he knew how the games was won at the start of the 2003 year. You can just see it on tape. Vikings ran Vikings win, Vikings pass Vikings lose. That is why I wanted Williamson also. Bring back the days when Moss just ran deep. And the Defense had to pick. Cover Randy with two or stop the running back from picking up 8? When they brought the guy up to stop the RB there was Randy running down the field beating his corner and hauling in a deap bomb.

Bring the run back and this team will fight for a chance to go to the Super Bowl!!!

Randy seems very upset at what Daunte said. I am hoping one remark about how Daunte thought it was time for Randy to move on would not end the relationship between Randy and Daunte. When time heals all wounds, I expect Randy and Daunte to make up. They have worked well together over the years and they get along so great. It would be a shame to see a great friendship end for that remark that Daunte said.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper has one thing to say to former teammate Randy Moss - friendship is a two-way street.

In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Moss said that the close relationship he once shared with Culpepper in Minnesota had deteriorated after Moss was traded to Oakland in the offseason.

"Once you grow to love a person, a breakup is kind of hard," Moss said. "I thought Culpepper was (my friend), but now that everything's happened, it seems to me I lost a friend.

"I used to go over to Daunte's all the time. I'd call him up after practice and ask him what he was doing. He'd say 'You know we are doing it big. Come on over.' I thought I had a friend in Daunte, but obviously I didn't."

Culpepper, in town for the team's developmental camp at Winter Park, was clearly puzzled by the remarks.

"My phone number hasn't changed," Culpepper said, implying that Moss has not contacted him. "If you're my friend, why haven't you talked to me? Know what I'm saying?"

When Moss was traded, there was much speculation that his antics behind the scenes had grown too difficult to compensate even for his immense talent.

But Culpepper refused to say anything derogatory about Moss, refuting reports that Moss hindered Culpepper's ability to lead the team.

"He's been excused from the rest of the offseason program and he'll be gone indefinitely," coach Mike Tice said Thursday. "I really can't speak about any reasons why or when he'll be back. It's in the league's hands. We'll leave it at that."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said he couldn't comment on Smith's status or elaborate on Tice's comments.

"He's been excused from the club at this point, by the club - not by the league," Aiello said.

Receiver Nate Burleson talked as though Smith was out for the season.

"We have to hope for the best, hope he continues to keep his head in the game and physically stays ready," Burleson said. "We'll see him in a year."

It's unclear whether Smith actually tested positive for a banned substance. Under terms of the substance abuse policy, a Stage Three member of the substance abuse program can be suspended for one year for either testing positive or failing to comply with his treatment program

The Vikings cranked up their kicker competition Tuesday by agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with Edinger, who was cut earlier this month by the Chicago Bears after spending the previous five seasons with them.

Last year, Edinger scored a career-low 67 points - making only 15 of 24 field goals. He'll be up against Aaron Elling in training camp.

The job isn't guaranteed, though, because the Vikings plan to give Elling every chance to stay on top of the depth chart.

"I don't want to take anything away from him," Edinger said. "I have to come in and earn it. I know that. I just have to do my best."

Well this time the Vikings got him. After he had a super bad year. I am pulling for Elling far more and hope he can get it cranked up. He is still young and hope that he got it together. The Vikings are giving Aaron all the chances he can get so I hope this time he can kick some butt and get the job over Edinger.

The proposed $600 million sale of the Vikings to New Jersey real estate developer Zygmunt Wilf was discussed by the league's finance committee and could be approved by the owners Wednesday, although some details in the agreement between Wilf and current owner Red McCombs are holding up the process.

"From what we can see right now, just logistical issues," said Benson, who heads the finance committee. "It's just a matter of getting the paperwork done."

Wilf was expected to arrive in Washington on Tuesday night. If the sale isn't approved Wednesday, it could be done by electronic vote by the owners at a later date.

"I don't see any roadblocks," Benson said.

New Vikings owner Zygmunt Wilf likes vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski and coach Mike Tice a lot, and the only front-office change expected is a promotion for Brzezinski.

Brzezinski is a key guy for the Vikings that must be keep I feel!!!!! This guy is getting the most out of the money the Vikings have spent and is making some great moves.

Tice I am glad the owner likes him. I feel he needs a fair shot. The players seem to like him a ton and now with Randy out of the shot he can run this team. Also I feel Scott was more of a coach that Tice was on the offense and they threw the ball more than Tice wanted to. Tice would come out and say they threw the ball to much but then the next week there they would be again throwing the ball. I like how the team is stacked up this year. Love the draft they had. If Bennett can keep from getting hurt this year I think this could be a moster year for the Vikings and Tice will be around for some time and have guys that work for him and not with him and over him as I think Scott was.

Four-time Pro Bowl center Matt Birk, a mainstay of the Minnesota Vikings' offensive line, underwent hip surgery Tuesday that could sideline him all of summer training camp and perhaps jeopardize his availability for the start of the regular season.

The surgery, to repair a torn labrum in Birk's right hip, is the fourth procedure to which the seven-year veteran has been subjected over the past nine months. The three earlier operations were all to repair sports hernias. Birk believes the hip injury resulted from the sports hernias.

"This is all a function of having tried to compensate for [the hernias]," said Birk, who has missed all of the offseason conditioning program. "When they checked out the hernia, to see how it was progressing, they found this thing. Hopefully, this will take care of it."

Normal recovery time for the labrum surgery is 3-4 months. So even under the best-case scenario, Birk likely would not be fully rehabilitated until early September, leaving him little time to prepare for the Vikings' regular-season opener on Sept. 11.
Scary!!!!!! Out of anyone in that line the Center is the worst one to lose. I hope this does take care of it and he can come back heatly this year. Also to scare the Vikings into looking for a replacement for Birk also...

But I also think the Vikings will be ok with Cory Withrow.

Also Birk never played center until the Vikings moved him there it said. Who knows Goldberg who never played center for the Cowboys could have a crash course on center also.

That stinks, but what are you going to do. Here is hoping he will be ready for this season. He is the heart and soul of the OL IMO. Vikings can't afford to lose him for any part of this season.

Durango53

He is the heart of that OL that is for sure. But Cory Withrow I feel is the best backup in the league. One thing about the Vikings is that they have a very deep line and the Vikings won 4 out of 5 games with Cory starting last year for them.

I just read that it's common knowledge among league owners that Red was milking $30+ million a year out of the team, since he bought it. Now he will clear $350 more out of the sale.

Good riddance you bloodsucker!

TC: If there was justice, Red McCombs would pocket nothing out of that sale. It's bad enough that he ruined the Vikings with his penny-pinching ways and treating employees like dirt, but it's worse that POS has to go pocket that money.

Well with the one good thing Red did was he had some good guys helping Tice getting the most out of the players for the money he was spending which I hope will help out now with them trying to get a team that can do things........

But ya just what a used car salesman does. Low ball everyone and then after he tells people what a piece of trash they have and makes it seem like a favor that he is taking it off your hands turns around and sells the same thing for the price of gold. Happy day he is gone. And it seems that Wilf is going out of his way in saying he isnt going to move the team at all....

Q: Do you have to shift other things as well. Is Adam Goldberg in the mix?

Loney: The center position will be as it is. Goldy (Adam Goldberg) has moved into guard, more as we think that's a position he can start at and excel at. He's had a good mini camp and ota's so far.

That was a question and answer from the Vikings web site with Steve Loney the OC. A lot of questions on the O-Line and such. I am so excited that they are talking run more and more pounding.

Guys I play ball with and hate the Vikings are saying that the Vikings might be the team to beat this year if they run as much as people think.

Just ran across this article about McQuarters visiting the Vikings. Would not hurt, I figure, if Chavous keeps up the holdout and animosity to have the talent in the likes of McQuarters.

McQuarters spent last five seasons with Bears
Associated Press

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Defensive back R.W. McQuarters paid a visit to the Minnesota Vikings on Friday, looking for the next stop on his NFL career.

McQuarters was cut by the Chicago Bears in a cost-saving move, and has since visited Miami, Detroit, Washington, the New York Giants and Minnesota.

He spent five seasons in Chicago after being traded from San Francisco in 2000, signing a $21 million contract extension in January 2002 that ran through 2006.

In five seasons in Chicago, McQuarters had 295 tackles and nine interceptions.

McQuarters declined interview requests at the Vikings' developmental camp practice on Friday.

Vikings coach Mike Tice said he likes the veteran presence and versatility McQuarters brings to the table. Though he primarily has played cornerback in the NFL, McQuarters spent part of last season as a safety and can return punts.

"Knowing that he is a return guy ... certainly would give us some depth there at worst," Tice said. "Last year he played some safety. The versatility is a good thing, but knowing that he's a veteran guy and another guy that knows the division, I think he'd be a good addition, regardless of what else we have back there."

Vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski said it was too early to say whether the team would sign McQuarters. If the Vikings do sign him, it would be the latest move to upgrade a porous defense.

Already this offseason, the Vikings have signed defensive tackle Pat Williams, cornerback Fred Smoot, safety Darren Sharper and linebacker Sam Cowart and traded for linebacker Napoleon Harris.

Hey Mark any news on Brock Lesnar? Heard he is making a try again for the Vikings. I guess he didnt go to NFL Eroupe like the Vikings wanted but has he been working with anyone?

We hear things now and then. He has been working with a personal trainer. The problem is - strength and raw ability wasn't the issue last year. He was one of the strongest players on the team and had great quickness. The problem is that he had trouble putting the physical tools to practical use on the field. He doesn't have the moves he needs to slip blockers and make plays. That's why they wanted him to get experience in Europe.

- the Vikes have backs who can play in this league, they need to stay healthy

- he can't see going to training camp with the limited depth they have at RB

- the Vikes will not trade for a RB if it means giving a high draft pick or a top player

- they will be watching the waiver wire for RB help and bring some people in

Randy Moss says his new quarterback with the Oakland Raiders, Kerry Collins, is better overall than his former quarterback, Daunte Culpepper of the Vikings.

Moss, traded by the Vikings to the Raiders this spring, said so during an ESPN "SportsCenter'' interview.

"When it comes to athleticism, Daunte has Kerry beat by a large margin," the controversial wide receiver said. "But Kerry has pocket presence and knows how to read defenses. So Kerry has a slight step over Daunte."

Nobody from the team contacted me. I was disappointed and hurt... . All that I've done for the team and the state of Minnesota... just to be traded like I was nothing. It hurt."

I like Randy and I hope he does well with the Raiders, but his comments about his departure and his anger towards Daunte is getting very old. He is going to ruin his goodwill to the Minnesota sporting public if he continues to go on and on about this.

I thought Randy was happy about going to Oakland and how it's a great thing that he left Minnesota. Sounds like he hasn't gotten over his departure and etc. Randy got himself out of town and it does not look good on his part whining about it.

TC talked about the RB situation.

I hear so many good things about Fason. I wouldn't mind him be the starter even though it will likely be Bennett. Good thing the Vikings did not trade Bennett and it's a great thing they drafted Fason considering the uncertanity of Onterrio who basically ended his Vikings career with his stupidity.

Durango53

I can't believe it, but Tice has gone on and on about how he is sticking by Ontario. How he is part of the Vikings family and they will suppport him and that he expects him to be back with the team and contributing when the suspension is over.

McCombs, speaking on a conference call from his San Antonio office, reminded reporters that all the offseason moves made by Minnesota were completed under his watch. After adding at least five new starters on defense, the Vikings could be a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

"To me, this year - this will be my team, regardless of the fact that we're totally out of ownership," he said. "It's obvious that we were involved in putting this team together."

But Wilf, who was unavailable for comment, will now be calling the shots. The sale - approved unanimously by NFL owners on May 25 - closed late Monday, and McCombs spoke with Wilf Tuesday morning.

This guy makes me sick!!!!!!!!!

WHERE WAS THIS MONEY WHEN YOU HAD THE TEAM THE LAST 7 YEARS!!!!!!!!! And now after you about sold the team you spent THERE money (Remeber Red no money was to be payed until the team was sold so none of your money was used so your team?) to get all these players. After rebuilding their defense during the offseason, the Vikings again are a trendy spring pick to reach the Super Bowl. McCombs said those who have made such projections "got it right," and left little doubt that he will seek credit for the Vikings' future accomplishments -- much as he did when the San Antonio Spurs won the 1999 NBA championship six years after he sold them.

"I would not have even a twinge of jealousy," McCombs said. "I would just have a great deal of pride. ... I couldn't get to a championship role with the Spurs. We got that shortly after. They were generous enough to invite me into all of the celebrations and gave me a ring, for which I was very grateful. I felt very much a part of it because most of the players and coaches that were there, I'd have had a big role with.

If we win the NFC or SB, and they give this SOB a ring, I will go ballistic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Billy Joe McCombs just does not get it, does he. He finds his way in the headlines. You would think he would just go away now that he got his money and the sale is approved, but he is continuing to carry on with his stupid comments about how he should be credited for the team's success this coming season if they win it all. What a piece of crap he is. Red did not want to pay any signing bonuses to Smoot and Pat Williams. He wanted the new owners to pay that. That just goes to show what that Texan is all about.

I just get angry just talking about him. The way he lied to the fans. The way he manipulated the coaches, the players, and the employees. You just can't trust him. Reusse said it best about how you can't even trust him if he tells you what time it is. That's just Red.

If there was a justice, he would not get one penny of that sale. It's a shame he is laughing all the way to the bank.

Red should just go away. No one wants to hear from him not even the media in the Twin Cities. Of course, that guy can't help himself. Red has to be Red by saying stupid comments and being so self-centered. I am sure this is not the last time that he will stop talking.

Oh and the thing about him rooting for the Vikings is pure crap. He can care less. Sure he will notice if they do well so he can go flap his gums about what a great job he did as an owner in spending money.

He is a piece of work. You would be hard-pressed to get me to say anything good about the con artist, Billy Joe McCombs.

"The first thing we're going to do is fix the air conditioning," Wilf said, "and then we're going to take care of that ship."

Wilf proved a quick study following a 9 a.m. staff meeting, identifying the two biggest eyesores of a building he inherited from former owner Red McCombs. Rather than turn his parking lot into a veritable HAZMAT site this summer -- complete with portable air conditioners, generators and hoses -- Wilf will ensure the in-house system functions properly for the first time in three years. He also plans to rebuild the splintered Viking ship that greets visitors arriving from Interstate Hwy. 494.

You got to be kidding me!!!!!!! Red was so freaking cheap he didnt fix the freaking air conditioning!!!!! And had portable stuff brought in?!?!?! It shows he is a dumb ass. It would be more expensive in the long run to do that crap. What a idiot.

It appears Tice will have to prove his worth to new owner Zygi Wilf. Tice's contract expires after this season, and Wilf says he wants to evaluate Tice during the season before determining his future. The team is 23-25 in three full seasons under Tice, with a 1-1 record in the playoffs. After authorizing some $20 million in signing bonuses, added to his $600 million price tag, Wilf has made clear that he expects this season's group to win the NFC North.

Along with the NFC North the whole NFC!!!

Like the idea with Tice. I think with what he has he can get it done now. I like getting a OC that is under Tice not a head of Tice. Bennett was clocked in 9.91 seconds and 10.0 seconds in 100-meter track races this spring.

"The 9.91 would have been a fifth-place finish in the last Olympics in Athens, Greece," Vikings running backs coach Dean Dalton said. "He's smoking."

Bennett is healthy for the first time in two years after recovering from major ankle and knee surgeries.

"He's better now than he has ever been," Dalton said. "And he has matured."

Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper, after seeing Bennett in spring development camps, agrees.

"It's the best he has looked since he has been here," Culpepper said.
Seems that Mike has slowed down some. But expected when you play football. But it is great to hear that he is running and looking good. If he can stay healthy I think he will have a Pro-Bowl year. With the line and the guys coming back and the coachs going with the run more I hope and looks like this year he should have a monster year if he stays healthy.

Red pocketed every dime he could.

The air conditioning didn't work, there were leaks in the roof, the locker rooms and weight room were outdated, the big garage doors didn't work - so if the Vikings wanted to open the door for ventalation or to let cold air in to simulate conditions - they couldn't, and the list goes on.

Wed Jun 15 2005 - Coach Mike Tice isn't happy with weak-side linebackers Donatarrious Thomas and Raonall Smith. "I have not seen to this point the consistency that I've been looking out of either one of those athletes." We're surprised E.J. Henderson isn't getting a look there.

I think if they gave it to E.J. they would get the same thing. E.J. had a hard time at MLB last year and for him to learn some there this time around and then have to change it up I think would be hard. But then again what do I know they are the ones paid to make the football picks.........

Pickles84

I love what the Vikings have done to enhance their defense. But as in the past years, the main weakness for this defense is the whole linebacking core. The one player who I think can pull the linebackers together is Sam Cowart. The Vikings getting Cowart for a 7th round pick was a great and smart move by the Vikings.
But for the first time in years, I feel pretty good about the Vikings linebackers. I think it's because if the linebackers let a running back slip through, the Vikings have excellent tackling defensive backs.

Durango53
06-29-2005, 10:07 AM
Welcome Pickles!!!!!!

I must agree with you on about everything you have said........ :D

I dont think the Vikings let the RB slip though I think the running backs let the vikings down with Smith pulling on the fake dong.... ;)

And I also think that because the secondary looked so bad last year (worse than noramal) is because of the very bad play of the LB core. I still think it is a weak point but it will be much better and I to think that Cowart will be a strong point in it.

Pickles84
06-29-2005, 02:32 PM
Thanks for the welcome message. And Happy Birthday. I know, it's a little late...lol.

I think that the linebackers and cornerbacks will actually help each other this season. In the fast 4-5 seasons, it seemed as if the defensive backs always thought that the linebackers didn't need any help stopping the run. And likewise, it seemed as though the linebackers always thought that the defensive backs didn't need help in protecting against the pass. But this season, there are many defensive veterans that came in to break of that philosophy. That is why I think the Vikings defense will be much improved. They defense will play more as a TEAM instead of position groups.

And so it begins ...

Word has it that Wilf is close to buying some land near the Anoka site. IF that happens, there are rumors that he will build a new headquarters, practice/training facility there, (whether the stadium bill goes through or not) and develop the 13 1/2 acres of prime real estate that the current headquarters sits on. Land goes for quite a bit higher price where it sits now.

What is the feeling about that there Mark?

I can see it because it sounds like Winter Park is beat up a bit after Red didnt sink a dime into it. And does moving the headquartes help (in the future) the plans to get a new stadium in that location?

>TC<
07-05-2005, 06:16 PM
Winter Park would need a face-lift to bring it back to speed, but the infrastructure is fine. The turf in the field house was just replaced a couple years ago.

This is strictly a real estate guy making a decision based on where he can make money. The land the current headquarters sits on is worth a lot more money than the land the new one would be built on. (It's ripe for developement, and he'll make a ton of money.) The existing location is right off a main interstate highway and within 10 minutes of another(20 minutes from the Metrodome). The new location would be 45 minutes from the Dome, with no infrastructure in place until a stadium is built. (more or less in the middle of nowhere)

It reminds me of Red selling off the Vikings Food Service, a catering and vending suply company that the Vikings owned. It made nice porfit every year. Red wasn't interested in a yearly profit, he wanted as much money as he could get up front - so he sold it for $27 million and put it in his pocket. The team cash flow went down but he didn't care.

The skeptics, (of which I'm one), look and see that the Vikings own the land they are on now, therefore, there is no cost to staying there, other than taxes and maintenance. I see a guy trying to recoup some of the money he put into buying the team.

I hope I'm wrong and the Wilf has good intentions but I am concerned.

TC

Durango53
07-05-2005, 06:32 PM
I am with you Mark on that. I am worried also that he might be trying to get some money out of the deal.

But if he does have plans for making a new stadium and is driven to do it even if he has to pay for it out of his own pocket you would want to get the cheapest land you could also. If that is the case then I can see why you would want to do it. But if not then ya I think it is a bumm deal and one he better think about very good before it looks like to the fans that he is pissing on them like Red always did.

What have you been hearing about Williamson? I have heard that he is making some great catchs on hard to get balls but missing some easy ones. If that is the case I will take that because he should get it together and make those easy catchs.

Wes Chandler is working hard with Williamson. He "fights" the ball sometimes, so he doesn't make some catches he should. The bottom line is that you can help someone learn how to catch the ball, but you can't teach them how to run a 4.25/40.

Vikings Running Back: Michael Bennett vs. Mewelde Moore vs. Ciatrick Fason
This could easily have been Onterrio Smith's job but his suspension for the entire 2005 season obviously takes him out of the equation, and it could signal the end of his days in Minnesota. Smith will be a restricted free agent this season and, if the same coaching staff is in place, we're hearing that Smith has run out of chances.

With that said, the Vikings still have a ridiculous amount of depth at the position. Moe Williams isn't even included in the candidates list but he will continue to contribute on a high level as a short-yardage ball carrier, change-of-pace runner and reliable dump-off receiver out of the backfield, not to mention on special teams.

As for the No. 1 job, Bennett has to be the favorite to start on opening day if he's suited up. The former 2001 first-round pick has missed 13 games to injuries since his 2002 Pro Bowl season, in which he rushed for a career-best 1,296 yards. A broken foot limited him to eight games in 2003 and he missed the first five games of 2004 with a knee injury.

Bennett's inability to stay healthy has stunted his development terribly, but the good news is that he's still only 25 years old and possesses the explosive speed to provide long runs. The Vikings will always need good depth behind him, but he's their top choice.

Moore will continue his role as a versatile backup. He gives the Vikings good insurance should Bennett's injury problems persist. Moore lacks the size, power and durability of an every-down starting back in the NFL, but he received excellent experience as a rookie and proved capable of handling multiple roles. Moore contributed as a change-of-pace runner, receiver and special teams' player as a return guy and in other facets.

The team has the luxury of bringing Fason along slowly. He is an outstanding athlete with good top-end speed and very little mileage on his legs, but he's also unpolished in the passing game and needs to learn to run with better pad-level.

The bottom line is that you can help someone learn how to catch the ball, but you can't teach them how to run a 4.25/40.
TC
That is very true. I think he will be fine and I believe that the WR is going to be OK without Moss and Culpepper showed it last year when Moss was out anyway.

But that speed is what I loved in the draft that they got!!!

I wonder who would win in a foot race Bennett or Williamson? That would be fun to watch!!!!!

Durango53
07-07-2005, 06:59 PM
Ok now on the RB thing.

I have a feeling that Bennett will be ok this year. With Jimmy back I think he will be excited to run and the Vikings should also. But I do have a good feeling about Mike after talking to Rob Smith in the off season and all that I think it will work out.

And as you said "the Vikings still have a ridiculous amount of depth at the position" and what makes it so more exciting is that they are all a diffenet kind of runner. You got Bennett who is just speed. If he gets past the D-line you are going to get screwed fast. And Moore who is that all around guy that has some good speed and moves. Throw in some Moe who is going to pound the hell out of you and then give you some more. Add in Fason who could be a wild card but fit in with the pounding RB that should have some speed will be exciting to get him some reps. But I hope he learns what Moe knows and Moe will teach him.

That is COOL!!!!!!!!!

I think they was right in saying the thought they found the cause of what was giving him all the greif last year so it will be nice to see that taken care of and him back in the saddle again!!

One thing this team has got back and the reason Culpepper looked so bad those couple of years and fumbled so much was the O-line and Tice got that fixed and I think with Tice and Loony that they will use that O-line to bash some heads in and Birk is the leader on that line.

I hope McKinny now will look like he did two years ago instead of last year. I still think he was hurt last year he just didnt have that quick step that he had before on passing blocking.

Minnesota Vikings

Underrated: Fred Smoot, cornerback

The guy can talk a big game, which has a tendency to turn off the media, but he can play. Smoot is a smooth cover corner who doesn't get the due he deserves because of his mouth. That matters little here. Smoot can play.

Overrated: Darren Sharper, safety

The Green Bay corners were ripped last season, but those who watched the tapes say Sharper had a lot to do with the Packers' poor pass defense. He took bad angles to the ball. Sharper isn't the same player he was three years ago when he was a quality safety.

People in the organization are quietly saying that McKinnie has been working very hard and they expect big things from him this year.

The D-line is going to make or break our pass defense. If they can put consistant pressure on the opposing QB, then the DB's will be fine. If they don't, the DB's will have problems. Almost any QB in the NFL can do damage if he has all day to throw the ball.

TC

Durango53

That is GREAT NEWS on McKinnie. GREAT GREAT GREAT!!!!!!!! Last year I dont know he just looked slow and even hurt at times. I dont know if he was hurt or not or if teams just figured out how to get by him but I am happy that he is working and hope he is full go this year!!

And you are so right about the D-line. Two years ago when they had that great start and the Defense was playing great it all started with the D-line. At that time they was getting pressure on the QB and hitting him and making the backfield look like the best out there. The D-Line is the make or break of any team.

Pickles84
07-11-2005, 10:21 PM
Bryant McKinnieis a huge man and he loves football. If you put the passion of the game and the size of this man all together, you get an over-powering lineman; like McKinnie. Last season, it did look like he was have troubles. But this season, Daunte Culpepper will be even better than last season. Mainly because of the O-line.
And if Daunte Culpepper has time in the pocket(or even out of the pocket), he will be unstoppable. The newest column here at A.F.S. is NFL's Fantasy Gridiron. It is my column, and as I said in there, Culpepper is one of my top 3 QBs. He's got the receivers, and he has a better O-line(including McKinnie).

Durango53
07-12-2005, 12:20 AM
I think the O-line will give him his time and his numbers as of last year. I think with Scott gone and I hope Tice and Loony making the calls I think the running game this year is going to make Culpepper look like the best.

Wilf talked this week about his long term goals and commitment to the team which is how he has run his family business. He would prefer to model ownership like the Rooney's in Pittsburgh (rather than McCombs' golddigging.)

As chairman, Zygi Wilf said he and Mark Wilf will share supervision of day-to-day operations. They'll spend as much time in Minnesota as possible, something that McCombs and his president, Gary Woods, rarely did.

Good signs - if he follows through

I also saw where he is house hunting and really getting into coming to MN and I hope make it a home. I hope he does spend time there. I read a thing yesterday talking about how he wants a stadium and office practice fields all together also.

On a side note. I find it funny most players want to keep playing in a dome instead of a outside stadium.

Pickles84
07-12-2005, 04:51 PM
Zygi Wilf said that the Vikings will be owned by the Wilf family for generations (he stopped at great, great, grandchild).

I think the reason as to why a lot of Vikings players don't want an open air stadium is simply because of the cold. They know that, right now, the only way they are going to get a new stadium is if it's an open air stadium. The players were all for it when there was talk of a retractable roof stadium. Maybe(hopefully) now with Wilf, since he is big real estate guy, talks about a retractable roof stadium can start up again.

Durango53
07-12-2005, 04:57 PM
Wilf said outdoors. He likes the game outside. So it might come to a retractable but so far Wilf is against it or hasnt said anything about it in hopes of just getting one going.

Agent Jordan Feagan said Vikings cornerback Brian Williams will report to training camp on July 29 as scheduled. Williams and strong safety Corey Chavous skipped four voluntary offseason developmental camps because of dissatisfaction with their contracts. Chavous also is expected to report on time, even though neither he nor agent Eugene Parker will say so for the record. "Corey doesn't want to talk about it," Parker said. Chavous reportedly has been unhappy with his $1.9 million salary for this season. Williams reportedly was upset about losing his starting cornerback job to free-agent acquisition Fred Smoot.

Good I am glad that Williams is upset!!!!!! I dont expect anyone to be happy about losing his job!!!!! USE IT AS A FIRE UNDER YOUR BUTT!!!!!!!! Just like E.J. did and now coachs are saying E.J. is looking damm good!!!! Use it to fire yourself up!!! And if you do that people will have more respect for you and you can get some more playing time and even more cash when you cash out.

Same with Corey also but I expect this will be the last season for Chavous in the purple.

>TC<
07-13-2005, 01:50 PM
With the start of training camp less than three weeks away, Corey Chavous and Brian Williams continue to be invisible men around Winter Park.

Corey Chavous and Brian Williams both believe they have legitimate gripes with the Vikings. Chavous, who is nearing the end of the line in his career, wants a new contract that will reward him for the next year or two. Williams, who is entering his fourth year, has been demoted to nickel back and was essentially removed from consideration by other teams as a restricted free agent when the Vikings slapped the franchise tag on him.

Neither player has showed up at Winter Park since, skipping all four voluntary off-season workout sessions and remaining mum about their contract status.

Chavous, who participated in the Leo Lewis Football Academy Monday, refused to comment on his status and both he and Williams have remained silent on their intentions. Rob Brzyzinski said he expects both of them to be in camp when it opens later this month. We'll have to wait and see if those words are accurate, because for now, neither of the players are talking.

Minnesota Vikings 2005 Training Camp Preview

By Tony Moss, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) -

REPORT DATES: Rookies July 29th, Veterans July 29th

SITE: Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN

CAMP OBJECTIVES: The Vikings upgraded their defense by leaps and bounds in the offseason, and training camp will be the time for all of the new elements to come together under coordinator Ted Cottrell. Tackle Pat Williams (Bills) and rookie end Erasmus James (Wisconsin) will look to make an impact on the line, linebackers Sam Cowart (Jets) and Napoleon Harris (Raiders) will compete for starting jobs, and cornerback Fred Smoot (Redskins) and free safety Darren Sharper (Packers) will be responsible for improving a unit that ranked 29th against the pass in 2004. On offense, quarterback Daunte Culpepper must learn to work with first-round pick and wideout Troy Williamson (South Carolina), who will be asked to fill the man-sized shoes vacated by the departed Randy Moss. Outside of the passing game, new coordinator Steve Loney must settle on a running back to take the pressure off of Culpepper. Candidates include former starters Michael Bennett and Mewelde Moore, along with fourth-round draft choice Ciatrick Fason (Florida). On special teams, the Vikings signed former Bear Paul Edinger to compete with kickoff specialist Aaron Elling for place-kicking duties, and will look for one to emerge before the team breaks camp.

PRESEASON SCHEDULE: vs. Kansas City (8/12); at N.Y. Jets (8/19); vs. San Diego (8/26); at Seattle (9/2)

Check out Chris Carter's Yahoo column! He talks about six areas where teams can improve - the Vikings are the pick as most improved in 3 of 6 categories.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cc-sixpoints071105&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

6. Most improved team
We all know the Minnesota Vikings can score points with any team in the league. But when you add the kind of bodies and the kind of athletes they have added on defense – additions that include linebackers Napoleon Harris and Sam Cowart – defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell now has the option to do a lot of different things.

IF Williamson shows he can catch the ball.

IF Bennett stays healthy.

In what I posted above it says that the agent said Williams will be there But I know how that goes also....

And I think the Vikings have enough WR to cover a hole for Williamson for a bit. With Cambell he can open the field a bit but he isnt the long term answer there Williamson is.

But I think Bennett is the key also. He stays healthy he is going to make defenses come up and cover the run which we know here is what opens up the Vikings passing game.

The thing we are going to see a lot of this year is two TE sets I feel from the Vikings which will let them sweak by with some two WR sets also. But Williamson is going to have to step up at some time in this season.

Ok Viking fans lets talk about former top 10 draft pick in 2000.

FA signing Travis Taylor. What are your thoughts on him? Mark and I was talking some about him I want other thoughts on him.

Taking in account playing with some bad QB's in the past and when he isnt hurt he puts up some solid numbers.

Thoughts?

Durango53
07-16-2005, 12:57 AM
Rumor has it that Taylor, a former No. 10 overall draft pick, has the No. 3 role locked down, which means Robinson could either be the No. 2 wideout or the odd man out. There have been rumors that the Vikings would even consider cutting Robinson if he doesn't crack the starting lineup, but we have a feeling Tice will keep Marcus around to serve as a veteran mentor for his young wide receivers.

I thought that Taylor will be the number 3 guy but wouldnt be suprised if he moves up to number 2 and Willamson is the number 3 guy.

Durango53
07-16-2005, 12:58 AM
The second of the team's two first-round picks, Erasmus James, has been so impressive during minicamp workouts that the team already has him penciled in as a starter at one of the defensive end positions. The real fight will pit 2004 first-round pick Kenechi Udeze against Darrion Scott, who was picked in the fourth round of that same draft, over the other starting job. These two players were the polar opposite from one another in terms of the timing of their production last season. Udeze started strong before running into the proverbial rookie wall, while Scott actually performed better late in the season.

Good news that James is looking good!!!! Could Udeze be a 3rd down guy? Him and Johnstone coming off the corners on a passind down?

>TC<
07-16-2005, 11:22 AM
The competition should make all these players better. You can't take a down off if the guy behind you is busting his butt every time he gets on the field.

Birk, Kleinsasser, and Rosenthall are all coming off surgeries. They will be monitored closely during training camp, with limits on their work loads. The projection is for all three to be ready, and 100% healthy, for the regular season opener.

I hope so. Not having Birk and Rosenthal play together for any game is not a good thing. But they should be ready to play in time for the season's opener. As long as all three of these players aren't out at the same time, we should be okay.

There once was a time when you could go to the Vikings' training camp and watch practice for free. Ah, the good old days. Starting with the opening of camp July 29, Vikings fans over age 5 will not be able to view practices like they used to unless they fork over $5.

This is going to be sticky. NFL rules say that if you charge admission for practices, then you have to let other teams scouts have access like anyone else. The way the NFL has it set up is - if your practices are free, you can keep out opposing teams personel.

TC

Pickles84
07-19-2005, 04:05 PM
Yes. And the Vikings training camp has both fee-based sections, and one free-based section. The Vikings are trying to get the NFL to accept that scouts shouldn't be able to attend Vikings training camp because of that one free-based section.
The NFL hasn't said anything about this, but I hope they don't allow other scouts attend the training camp. I think the free-based section was an idea to keep other scouts out. Otherwise the Vikings would have made all areas fee-based.

>TC<
07-19-2005, 05:07 PM
Just for the record, the Vikings are not happy about the fees at all. They have no control over this decision. The agreement they negociated with Mankato to keep training camp at the college gives the city the right to control all aspects of camp, fees, concessions, entertainment, etc., in exchange for the up front fee the Vikings get that pays expenses for the team.

Today's MPLS paper is reporting that the Vikings are accelerating negociations with Erasmus James agent.

just came across it...could be old .. interview with Troy

How surprised were you when Minnesota drafted you with the number 7th overall pick?

Troy Williamson- I wasn't surprised at all, just blessed, I knew they wanted speed and my agent, David, had talked to them at the combine and he told me that they were trying to lay low and might select me.

PFC- Did Minnesota show a strong interest in you before the draft?

Troy Williamson- Not really except at the combine.

PFC- What do you have to say to those so called "draft gurus" who projected you in the second round only to be taken number 7 overall?

Troy Williamson- Everyone has their favorite player or type of player, I wish them all the best and hope to prove any doubters wrong.

PFC- How much pressure is on you heading into this season knowing that many look to you to replace Randy Moss?

Troy Williamson- None- I am my own man. I am not there to replace anyone just be the best player and most complete player I can be.

PFC- What are your first impressions of Daunte Culpepper?

Troy Williamson- He is great, a real leader, and a person I look forward to playing with for a long time.

PFC- What role do you expect to have this year in this offense??

Troy Williamson- That's going to be for the coaches to decide, I just need to get in my playbook and everything else will take care of itself.

PFC- Looking at your game. what is the 1 thing you need to work on for the Pro level?

Troy Williamson- I have to make the college to NFL adjustment, once I do that everything will fall into place.

PFC- Many people such as Mel Kiper thought Mike Williams was going to be drafted ahead of you, do you see anything competitive now this season knowing that Mike is in the same division as you??

Troy Williamson- No, not at all, I wish Mike the best of luck, just not when they play the Vikings.

PFC- What are your goals for this season?

Troy Williamson- To develop my game and do whatever it takes to help the Minnesota Vikings win multiple superbowls.

The Greater Mankato Training Camp LLC announced Friday that they will charge a $5 entry fee to practices Sunday through Friday, and $10 on Saturdays. That opens a loophole in the NFL's training camp rules. Scouts from other teams cannot attend free practices. But if a team charges an admission fee, scouts are permitted to pay and watch. The Vikings are the only NFL team charging for admission to practices, league spokesman Greg Aiello said.

The notion that scouts from other teams could get an unfiltered opportunity to evaluate players is troubling to NFL coaches. Given the length of training camp, coaches must be wary of the plays and formations they utilize.

The last team to charge fans to watch practice was the Washington Redskins in 2000. But the team was perturbed to discover that a Dallas Cowboys scout attended every practice, taking copious notes, and the Redskins returned to free practices in 2001.

"It brings another problem for the Vikings, and we know that. But they did not tell us not to charge," said Paul Wilke, president of the Greater Mankato Training Camp LLC. Wilke said the decision to charge admission to practices was made to generate more revenue and offset operating expenses.Wilke said his group did not implement the charge last year because the four-year deal they agreed to with the Vikings was finalized too close to the start of training camp. But after they fell short of their corporate sponsorship goals and were unable to garner support from the state or community, the group decided to add the admission fee.

But Wilke noted there is still a free viewing area and the charge would enable his group to cut staffing by two-thirds because everyone will enter through the same entrance.

Although they have printed out tickets and paid for advertising, Wilke said he would still listen to the Vikings if they want to get rid of the entrance fee.

"We'd still be interested if they want to figure out a way to make it free," he said.

Viking Update Staff

The Vikings went out and acquired at least a handful of new starters on defense this offseason. Why? The numbers, or defensive rankings, in recent history showed that is what they needed to do.

If the Vikings are going to get over the hump this season and return to being one of the elite teams in the NFC, it's going to have to come as the result of an improved defense. The team has made multiple changes on the defensive side of the ball to achieve that end and could end up with as many as six new starters by the time the season gets underway.

On the defensive front, the team used a first-round pick to take Erasmus James - the third straight year the team has used a No. 1 pick on the defensive line. With Chris Hovan shown the door, the team went out and paid for Pat Williams - a pure nose tackle whom the team hopes won't just be a run-stuffer but a guy that requires double teams that could open up Kevin Williams for another Pro Bowl season.

In the middle of the defense, the addition of veterans Napoleon Harris and Sam Cowart is hoped to bring some discipline to a group of talented but underachieving players. With high hopes for Dontarrious Thomas , E.J. Henderson and Raonall Smith , having a pair of players with a lot of playing experience can only make the team better.

In the secondary, the addition of Fred Smoot and Darren Sharper can turn what has been one of the weakest units on the team into one of the strongest. The team has used free agency to build its starting core - with Smoot and Antoine Winfield at the corners and Sharper and Corey Chavous at safety.

Why were all the additions necessary? Just look at the numbers. Since 1999, the Vikings have ranked 28th, 23rd, 26th, 27th, 28th and 27th in the league in team defense. Despite five different defensive coordinators in those six years, things never seemed to click. With this new willingness to spend, the Vikings are convinced not only can they move up to the middle of the pack defensively, they have the potential to be a top-10 defense.

The buzz around Winter Park is that if the team can move up into the teens in defensive rankings, they will win the NFC North. If they can climb in the top 10, start making reservations for Detroit because the Vikings will be Super Bowl bound.

Reports in the Twin Cities say that the Vikings have been in contact with the agent for Eddie George. There has been talk since the Smith suspension that the Vikes would try to bring in a veteran or two for training camp, so this isn't a total surprise.

Today's MPLS paper is reporting that the Vikings are accelerating negociations with Erasmus James agent.

Some great posts Mark!!!!!!!!!

I would love to see Eddie George to tell you the truth. Not as a starter mind you but as the back up roll. I think he can still do some things but not as the starter and could help the young guys quite a bit. And help out a Ciatrick Fason who is in the same mold a ton I feel.

Great news on James!!!! Start to get these guys signed!!!!!! I saw that some other team just signed there number 2 round draft pick so they should start all signing very quick here now.

I said a few pages ago that a number 5 in the defense will give them a trip!!!!!

I didnt see this intreview Mark so thanks!!!! Sounds like a great kid that has the right mind set!!!! Hell ya he cant play Randys game. Randy could hardly play it last year. Just play your game that is why they brought you here!!!!!! I dont think we will see this kid walking out on the team!!!!! Plus I think Birk will pound him in the ground if he does.

Just for the record, the Vikings are not happy about the fees at all.
Could you see the Vikings just floating some money over to them so that they dont charge? That is bull what they are doing and Ya I read it also that the Vikings aint happy about it also. Or could it be a ploy also to get the Vikings to say dont charge and then they say well stay here for a few more years also? Wasnt the Vikings going go move there SC somewhere else after this year?

From the artical also that Mark quoted from I am going to add some things.

Agent Ethan Locke met with Rob Brzezinski, vice president of football operations, during an afternoon session. The sides will continue discussions by phone, and the team hopes to have James in uniform for the first practice of training camp on July 30.

The Vikings have made offers to the rest of their draft picks and could break through with agreements this week.

Great to get this done with James I think we see who they feel is going to be the guy they have to have and who will be a starting end for them this year.

Also great to see they have offers on the table for the rest of the guys also. I have a feeling that we will start to see some guys signed today though the week.

The team put training camp up for bids last year. A town in one of the Dakotas bid strong against Mankato. It was was all about money.

The Vikings (Red) put themselves in this spot when they held up Mankato for big fees to keep the camp there. The bottom line is that there is no money to pay the Vikings unless they charge some kind of fee to the fans. The city isn't putting up any money, the state didn't allocate any funds, and the school isn't putting in anything.

If I remember right, this is a four year deal (maybe we have that back in an earlier post from last year).

Minnesota: You would think that the trade that sent Randy Moss, arguably the most talented offensive weapon in the league, to Oakland would leave the Vikings with an impossible void to fill. But it hasn't. The Vikings, in fact, appear to be far stronger overall because they have made several strong defensive additions with free agents Pat Williams (tackle, Buffalo), Fred Smoot (cornerback, Washington), Darren Sharper (safety, Green Bay) and Sam Cowart (linebacker, New York Jets). They also received linebacker Napoleon Harris in the Moss trade, and used a first-round draft pick on defensive end Erasmus James (Wisconsin). With Williams plugging the middle, the rest of Minnesota's front seven figures to generate more plays. James has been so impressive in offseason workouts, Vikings coach Mike Tice has compared his pass-rushing moves to those of former Minnesota star Chris Doleman.

THE EARLY READ

After the Eagles, the Vikings look to be the next-best team in the NFC. Moss' departure can't be trivialized because it will take away a significant chunk of offense. However, Culpepper has raised the level of his play to the point where he is capable of remaining highly effective and should be able to get plenty of production from the combined efforts of Burleson, Williamson, Taylor and Marcus Robinson. Minnesota's defensive upgrades should also play a major role in allowing the team to be a serious contender.

Very good news on James!!!!!!!! The second you hear he is signed TC jump in and let us know!!!!!!

But he must be doing some outstanding things if they are wanting to get him signed right now before everyone else and get him going. Then dropping the Doleman name is shows the respect they have going for him also. I hope he is a mold out of Doleman.

Also along these lines to hear the Viking talking about going to a 3-4 is PISSING ME OFF. Even to play one play in the 3-4 is I feel dumb. You have some outstanding ends on this team. Udze, Johnstone, now James and throw in Scott who is being said might beat Udze out for starting to cut those down and have Williams get tied up in a double or even triple team over the nose is dumb. Heck I would look at third and long about putting Johnstone in as a DT or taking one of those ends if you must go to a 3-4 as a LB. The fastest one out of the group and rush him in a hole that you saw durning film or though out the game. To take the one weak spot of this team being the LB core and putting more of them out there isnt going to make that D stronger by numbers. It is going to make it weaker.

I would love to see Eddie George with the Vikings. Granted, his best years are probably behind him, but like Durango said, he would make a great teacher to the young guys. Besides, we saw last season that no matter how many running backs we have, we may need to use the 3rd string and/or 4th string running backs.
Eddie George can still play the gameand he can still break tackles, there's no doubt about that. The problem with him is his speed. Like the EA Football games say, "You can't coach speed".
If the Vikings do do sign George, Moe Williams' goal line chances may get reduced.
No matter what happens if he gets here, I would still love to see Eddie George in a Vikings uniform.

Pickles I am with you. Eddie knows the game. And remember one of my favorite Vikings players with Leroy Horard who had NO speed but he had power and hit people. I can see Eddie being that kind of player. And a nice change up from the speed of Bennett and Moore. No one will replace Williams just because he is the best RB in the game at picking up that blitz or being that option and faking out the blitzer. But he should have some in the tank and enough to help the Vikings out.
