Hens' Anderson out
July 23, 2003
BOSTON -- Matt Anderson has a new problem. The right-hander has stopped pitching because of an ailing pitching shoulder, and he had ultrasound and MRI tests Tuesday to find out what's wrong. Test results weren't immediately available.
Anderson hasn't pitched for Triple-A Toledo in more than a week, since pitching one-third of an inning for the save July 13. The Mud Hens' All-Star break began the next day, and Anderson told club officials about the soreness after returning.
Little has gone smoothly for Anderson since he signed a three-year contract with the Tigers before last season. He missed most of last season because of two injuries to the same shoulder. This season, he lost his closer's job early in the season and soon was demoted to Toledo, where he has pitched unevenly throughout his two-month stay. At no point have the Tigers appeared close to recalling Anderson.
In 35 2/3 innings with Toledo, Anderson was 1-3 with three saves and a 4.04 ERA.
