BOSTON - Mike Cubbage, recently promoted to Special Assistant to the General Manager of the Houston Astros, has left the team to become third base coach of the Boston Red Sox.

"I think it certainly is going to be a significant personal loss for me," Houston GM Gerry Hunsicker said. "I was looking forward to working with Mike in the coming season. It will be a loss for this organzation, but I think Mike's heart is still on the field. While I think he acknowledges that there will be some risk in taking this position it was something he wanted to do so I certainly wasn't going to stand in his way."

Cubbage had been a member of former manager Larry Dierker's staff but had moved to the front office when Dierker resigned.

Hunsicker said no timetable had been set to replace Cubbage and Hunsicker was uncertain Tuesday evening whether the position would be filled.

"It's kind of a specialized position," Hunsicker said. "I may not have someone in his position."
