Yankees trade 3B Robin Ventura to Los Angeles Dodgers for OF Bubba Crosby and RHP Scott Proctor

The New York Yankees announced today that they have traded third baseman Robin Ventura to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for outfielder Bubba Crosby and right-handed pitcher Scott Proctor.
Crosby, 26, was batting .361 (100-for-277) with 12HR and 57RBI in 76 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. This year, his .361 average and .635 slugging percentage lead the Pacific Coast League. Crosby was selected by the Dodgers in the first-round (23rd overall) of the 1998 First-Year Player draft.

Proctor, 28, was 5-4 with a 2.58 ERA in 41 relief appearances with Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A Las Vegas. In 2002 with Double-A Jacksonville, he led all Suns pitchers with 131 strikeouts and was named Dodgers' Minor-League Pitcher-of-the-Month for July. He was originally selected by the Dodgers in the fifth round of the 1998 draft.

Ventura was batting .251 (71-for-283) with nine home runs and 42 RBI in 89 games with the Yankees in 2003. He was acquired by the Yankees on December 7, 2001 from the New York Mets in exchange for OF/DH David Justice.

Absolutely Kel. Like I said in the Boone thread, i'd rather have kept Ventura and Claussen and forgotten about Boone. If not, then perhaps get Nightmare boy into the trade somewhere.

Yea, let's trade Robin who is a great contributer to the team and keep the Nightmare who's too buying pissing and moaning and blaming everybody but himself when he loses a game...I think Cashman is starting to lose his touch!!

greetings from hotel internet! apologies in advance for grammar errors, the SHIFT key on this keyboard doesn't always work...

i was absolutely SHOCKED when this trade went through. i thought it was the dumbest mose senseless trade imaginable. but most of that was probably emotions since robin was my second favorite player since he's been here. he'll be missed

BUT, after thinking about this trade more, i've decided to take the optimistic route.

Argument 1: Robin was contributing to this team...why trade him?
Robin was contributing to this team defensively and in te club house, but his bat was horrendous. he's 35, and chances are he won't be getting any better, especially in the second half, where he has history of hitting in te .220s. One problem i had with trading Robin was that his bat in the postseason will be missed; he was one of those guys who would come up with a big hit for you in pressure situations. But that's a loss we'll have to take.

Argument 2: Boone isn't significantly better than robin anyway.
This year, Boone offensively blows robin away. Even if Boone sucks in the second half, chances are he'd still put up better numbers than Robin would (agan, robin has a history of second half sucking). Robin may have the edge defensively (not many better than him in that area), but Boone isn't too bad of a defender himself. Boone is also 5 years younger than Robin and will be here through the 2004 season, after which we'll probably look to sign him long term. We've just solved our thrid base problem and have our infield of the future set. and we picked up two pretty good prospects from LA, amazingly (do the LA brass look at stats at all?). we also blocked Seattle from filling up a hole in ther lineup, another plus to this trade.

Argument 3: robin's leadership in the clubhouse will be missed.
This, i can't argue with. Robin was one of the most classy, stand up guys around. He represented the Yankes well. Torre said that he has added Robin to his life and Jorge said he was one of the best teammates he's ever had and compared him to Tino. You can't get higher praise than that.
BUT still, from everything i've heard, Boone is a great guy too. Classy, great in the clubhouse, great teammate, hard worker, great in the community, etc. He's not Robin, but he looks like a great young man who Yankee fans will eventually learn to love.

Argument 4: Why trade claussen, our top prospect?
I was shocked when i heard that he was traded 'since i thought Cashman said he was an "untouchable." But I'm guessing that Claussen was another classic case of the Yankees overhyping a prospect to boost up their trade vaue so they can get dealt in a trade like this. thats' the only explanation for it. if Claussen was really going to be the "Ace of the Future," then WHY would the yanks trade him for Aaron Boone??? I'm gonna trust the Yankees braintrust on this one. thinking back, who were the only prospects traded that came back to bite us the ass? Mike Lowell is all i can think of. Other 'can't miss prospects," Shane Spencer, Ricky Ledee, Ruben Rivera have all flopped. I trust Cashman that he knows what he's doing.

So, overall i have accepted this trade. i don't love it, i don't hate it anymore, i've just accepted it. Best of luck to Robin, he's one of the few ex-Yankees who i wish the absolute best for.

hmmm. i know the chicago guys here were SLAMMING the trade this weekend. they said it was horribly bad to get rid of a clubhouse leader like ventura.

i like boone, but i dont like getting rid of claussen.

and getting rid of ventura for peanuts is a SHITTY move.

HMMM...sounds like my Paully!!!! I still say the should offer Paully a couple of million to come back for the rest of the season...they need someone with his fire to rile up the bench.

Still though, pretty cool to go to Oakland. I've actually been to Oakland in 2000, but they were on the road at the time. If you get time milky, write up again about it, you probably have plenty of stories to tell.
