Did you know?
Not only did the Vet make its debut on April 10, 1971, but a blond broadcaster made his first Philly appearance that Saturday: Harry Kalas. Harry was the master of ceremonies for the pregame show and worked his first game in the Vet broadcast booth with By Saam and Richie Ashburn.
Jim Bunning, the starting and winning pitcher for the Vet opener, was the oldest (39) starting pitcher in the majors when he took the mound on April 10, 1971.
Only seven players on the 2003 Phillies roster were born when the Vet opened: Dan Plesac, Jose Mesa, Todd Pratt, Rheal Cormier, Turk Wendell, Jim Thome and Tyler Houston.
