Nelson is apparently none too happy about being dealt away from his home ... Great deal for the Yanks as long as he can be happy about it.

I'm in shock
We traded Benitez??? Whyyyyyyyy??? :umm He was doing okay. Torre was using him in back-to-back games too much (and he SUCKS when used in back-to-back games).
Then again, the fact that Todd Zeile still gets playing time shows how clueless Torre can be...he may have never learned how to use Benitez effectively...:ugh:
I don't know what to make of this trade :notme:. Why the HELL did we trade for Benitez in the first place if we were gonna turn around and do this???? :notme: :umm :hmm: We basically traded Jason Anderson and prospects for Jeff Nelson!!!

One of the local radio guys was saying that, from 1996-2001, Torre never really had to manage. That, given the team he had, he really only just pushed the buttons. And that, this year, he really has to come up with his own strategies, and to do some serious thinking about how the game should be played. He has to be more creative now than he's had to be since he joined the Yankees.
And, when you consider Torre's record in the NL (894-1,003; a .471 winning percentage), where there is considerably more strategy and creativity than in the AL, this particular radio announcer (a Yankee fan, BTW) said that Torre just might not be very good at it.
Don't shoot me. I'm just the messenger. :notme:
Last night(it was late when I found out) I was pretty cool with this deal, but now i'm not so sure. Maybe Benitez would have been okay if, as milky pointed out, he had been used correctly, and not every night. I was never Nelson's biggest fan, but I did kinda miss him after he left. Should be very interesting to see how this works out.

No Nelson was never the happiest person here but he was a good set up man...Benitez could't go 4 or 5 innings if he needed to. We needed someone who could come in in the early innings incase somebody really falls apart.
Yeah, Joe Torre can't manage...WTF! Tell Steinbrenner that...I'm sure he'd disagree. I love it how we never hear these things...I check all the NY papers everyday and I've never seen anything like this in the papers..I'm guessing this radio guy is a moron...I'd like to see how many World Series Rings this guy has.

I don't know about that Kellye. Take a look at how dismal he was with the Mets, the Braves and the Cardinals. He had a winning record with the Braves, but they never went to the post-season. His first post-season appearance as a manager was in 1996...with the Yankees.
People here have already complained about the 'pen not being used properly. Well, considering that Mariano used to be the best closer in the game, he didn't really need to think much. Everything was automatic. Put in Mariano to get to Wetteland. A no-brainer. Put in Stanton or Nelson to get to Mariano. Another no-brainer. But when he has a pen that requires "being used properly," he is failing.
It's just an opinion.
And you've never won any rings either. ;)

Yes Julie and he is not the person who "supplies" the players in the bullpen now is he...you want to trash the bullpen, that's Cashman's job! he's the one who's supposed to get decent players to get the game to Mo...Torre doesn't control that.
And maybe if you didn't come in here with every negative thing that is ever said about anyone even remotely involved in the Yankees, people wouldn't get pissed when you do come in here!
You developed a pattern of everytime anything negative is said about the Yankees you have to come in here and let it be known, while we just sit here and don't go running into any other forum to say negative things about anybody else, yet we always whether it is you or anybody else comes in here and trashes someone or something about the Yankee, Sorry but it's getting pretty old.
BTW...you haven't won any rings either:nut:

I took part in the Boone discussion because I was surprised at the fact that they brought him in. And, if you re-read the posts, I was in agreement with other people here. I did not come to "bash" the Yankees. I came to have a discussion on what I considered to be a stupid trade. A trade that would have been stupid regardless of who did it.
Excuse me. I won't bother you again.

Julie, you may not have come in here to bash the Yankees but some how you always, or atleast 90% of the time end up doing it. Sorry, but it's true!

Reading this, it has occured to me, maybe I shouldn't bash Grady so much. The fact is both our bullpen's well....SUCK. Except you guys have Mariano. Yet, we hold 2 of the top 3 records in the AL.
Maybe, just maybe, Torre and Little ain't so freakin bad.:D

In defense of Torre, and I'm not a Tore supporter nor am I a non-supporter, but speaking as a fan, I would say that Torre has done what he has needed to do with the talent that has been put around him..
Sure it is easy to 2nd guess him but fact is the Yanks are still in 1st and playing for Georgie is no easy task....
In another defense of Torre's past, he had a crappy Mets team to work with in the late 70's/early 80's and his 1st year with Atlanta he won the division with a so-so Braves team and then came in 2nd the next year....
He was around .500 with the Cards but never had a great Cards team to manage like the Cards of the mid- 80's and now more recently...
Remember, guys like LaRussa and even Bobby Cox did not start off very well either but are now considered 2 of the better managers in the game....
Bobby Cox's 1st 6 seasons never produced anything better than a 4th place finish...But provide him with some talent and he knows what to do to win..
Same for Torre IMO....

Yes he was barely over .500 as a Sox manager which was his 1st manager job...
Only 1 season better than 3rd place.....

I honestly never thought Torre was a very good in-game manager. He's great with dealing with players (probably the best in baseball), he was perfect for the 96-01 run, but as for making game decisions I sometimes disagree with him.
Why did Juan Acevedo come in to save Clemens' potential 300 win game? Why didn't he take Weaver out in the eighth inning of an early season A's game after everyone else in the world could see that he was getting tired? Why bench Nick Johnson for Todd Zeile not once, but TWICE in a big series? Why is Todd Zeile still playing at all???? :notme:
Those are some of the more obvious things that Torre done this season that had me utterly confused :umm
I don't think Torre is the worst in-game manager in baseball, but I don't think he's the best. I'm not calling for his head or anything, just pointing out that I've disagreed with him more than once.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Julie, have you ever seen Kel, milky, pinstripes, Pettitte, myself, or any other Yankee fan here at Addicts posting in the Mets forum trying to rile people up? I think not. Hell, even the Princess manages to come in here once in a while without kicking up a fuss. If you have any decent points of discussion to raise concerning the Yankees, feel free, but on behalf of not only the Yankee fans here, but some others as well, please keep your deliberate and frequently nonsensical anti-Yankee views to yourself. Thank you.
