Philly celebs cast All-Vet votes

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia-area sports celebrities were invited to participate in the All-Vet team voting and some early results are in.

So far, the group agrees on just four spots, unanimously choosing Mike Schmidt at third base, Phillies skipper Larry Bowa at shortstop, Greg "the Bull" Luzinski in left field and Steve Carlton as the team's left-handed pitcher.

After that, however, it gets interesting.

Ron Jaworski, the Eagles quarterback from 1977-86 and current ESPN analyst, and Saint Joseph's hoops coach Phil Martelli picked Bob Boone for their catcher, while the rest of the group went with the leader of the 1993 National League champions, Darren Daulton.

First base brought out the most disagreement as four players were listed on the ballots received thus far. Temple basketball coach John Chaney opted for Dick Allen. Former 76ers President Pat Croce and John Nash, the general manager of the Portland Trail Blazers (and former GM of the 76ers), selected Pete Rose. Martelli and former radio broadcaster Bill Campbell liked Rico Brogna, while Jaworski and former Phillies broadcaster Andy Musser voted for John Kruk.

Another intriguing difference surrounds the choice at second base. Croce, Campbell and Musser picked Juan Samuel (a Phillie from 1983-89), while Jaworski and Martelli went with Manny Trillo, the second baseman for the 1980 World Series championship team. Chaney and Nash went with Dave Cash, who led the NL with 213 hits in 1975.

Six-time Gold Glove Award winner Garry Maddox was picked to roam center field and Dallas Green was tabbed to manage the team on six of the celebrity ballots. Martelli went with '93 sparkplug Lenny Dykstra in center, and Campbell choose Danny Ozark to lead the club.

Tug McGraw was chosen to be the team's closer on five ballots, while 1993 NLCS MVP Curt Schilling was given the nod as the right-handed pitcher on four ballots.

The only current Phillie to lead the celebrity voting for his position is right fielder Bobby Abreu. He was picked on three ballots, while Jim Eisenreich and Von Hayes were listed on two.

The leader for each position in the celebrity voting parallels the results tabulated so far in the voting by the fans. Voting continues on phillies.com until August 17. The M.A.B. Paints and Tastykake All-Vet Team will be announced prior to the 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Braves on September 27.
