ARLINGTON, Texas -- Who said the Tigers don't have players other teams want?
Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez covets Tigers centerfielder Alex Sanchez, telling some people he believes Sanchez could be "the missing piece" in the Rangers' rebuilding program.
Rodriguez's endorsement comes less than a week after manager Alan Trammell said Sanchez had a good chance to be the Tigers' centerfielder in 2004.
While others in the Texas organization don't share Rodriguez's feelings about Sanchez, he has owner Tom Hicks' ear, and if Hicks wants the organization to go after Sanchez, then that's what will happen.
The Rangers' system is rich with prospects, and Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski is on record as saying he'll listen to trade offers for any player with the probable exception of right-hander Jeremy Bonderman, so a deal involving Sanchez wouldn't be out of the question.
If Sanchez is dealt, the Tigers would have to go outside the organization to find a centerfield placement, since one isn't ready in the minors.
