Cashman said the Yankees might address right field by promoting Juan Rivera from Class AAA Columbus. Rivera entered tonight's game hitting .329 with 6 homers and 34 runs batted in over 72 games. Rivera became the Yankees' regular starter in left field last September, and there is a chance he can fill that role in right, after the trade of the disgruntled Raul Mondesi on July 29.
Since then, Manager Joe Torre has given the bulk of the starts to David Dellucci, who has shown excellent range in the field but is batting .176 as a Yankee. Rivera would give the Yankees a better arm in right than Dellucci, and potentially more pop.
"He's a guy we're going to continue to watch," Cashman said of Rivera. "I'm not saying he's a definite, but he hit well in the postseason for us last year and did a nice job in the stretch drive. He could be an option as well."
