Bautista signs three-year deal with D-Backs

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Outfielder Danny Bautista, who hit .583 with seven RBI in the World Series, re-signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

In another move, the team hired former Milwaukee Brewers slugger Robin Yount as a coach, filling a vacancy created when Chris Speier retired after the World Series.

Bautista, 29, who turned down a $7 million, three-year contract offer last month, signed for three years at about $8 million.

He batted .302 in 100 games for the Diamondbacks last season, then went on a .364 tear in postseason play and finished with a .583 average (7-for-12) in seven World Series games. He started the final two games against the New York Yankees and went 5-for-8, driving in six runs.

The signing was essential to the Diamondbacks, who did not offer arbitration to free agent right fielder Reggie Sanders. The team signed Jose Guillen on Dec. 12, but Bautista is expected to replace Sanders as a regular.

Yount, a resident of nearby Paradise Valley, will be the team's new first base coach. Eddie Rodriguez coached first base during the season, but will move to third base to replace Speier. Rodriguez filled in for Speier for 11 games last summer.

Yount played for 20 seasons with Milwaukee, collecting 3,142 hits, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999.

"Robin's credentials speak for themselves," Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly said. "He's a Hall of Famer who won a Glove as a shortstop and as a center fielder. He was a Most Valuable Player and one of the most respected players in the game. I have to believe he has a lot to bring to the table."

The Diamondbacks continued to pursue free agent David Wells, who had lunch Tuesday with Brenly and general manager Joe Garagiola Jr., toured Bank One Ballpark and accepted an invitation to accompany managing general partner Jerry Colangelo to an NBA game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.

Wells, 38, won 20 games with Toronto in 2000 but made only 18 starts for the Chicago White Sox last season due to back surgery.

Wrong forum, James. :)

Wells could be a solid signing for some team. He'll surely be cheap(whatever "cheap" is these days), and he's working out a lot. He's really conditioning himself well.
