The Sausages Still Get Beaten

Aug 15, 2003 9:59 pm US/Eastern
PITTSBURGH (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers' racing sausages are still getting cooked by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates' racing pierogies -- a knockoff of the Brewers' costumed sausages that stage in-game races at Miller Park -- easily won a match race Friday night between the two fast-afoot food products.

Even without Pirates first baseman Randall Simon's involvement, the pierogies were runaway winners in a race that extended around the PNC Park playing field from right field to left field, passing both dugouts.

Simon, who attracted national attention and a pair of fines for swatting one of the sausages last month in Milwaukee, didn't even watch as he warmed up between innings.

Remarkably, Brewers pitcher Matt Kinney hit Simon in the right wrist with a pitch shortly after play resumed. Simon, the Pirates' third batter of the sixth inning, apparently was not hurt and stayed in the game.

Coincidentally, the Italian Sausage that was rapped by Simon's bat in Milwaukee, causing it to the collide with another sausage, again bumped a sausage during the race. Only this time there was no provocation from the Pirates' side, and the pierogies were well in front when the collision occurred.

To celebrate the victory, the Pirates shot off fireworks as their Parrot mascot presented the "Golden Skillet" trophy to the pierogies, who waved it above their heads as they exited the field. Queen's "We Are the Champions" played on the public address system.

The pierogies even practiced for the race, dutifully running around the PNC Park course for nearly an hour in their costumes following the Cardinals-Pirates game Thursday afternoon.

The sausages get a chance for revenge next Friday in a rematch on their home turf at Miller Park, where they are unbeaten this season -- even though they have been beaten upon there.

Oh yeah! Well I'd rather have a good link of Italian sausage over a pierogie any day of the week ... Except Friday when I eat fish.
