WARNING: The following is a blatant and unabashed commentary as well as promotion of one of my favorite new bands.
The South Austin Jug Band (http://www.southaustinjugband.com/)
Chances are not many of you have heard of this little group, yet.
But you will ... One of the many advantages of living where I do is within about 60 miles from my house I can get into deep trouble and debt seeing tons of good bands ... In fact, I'm going to see "tons" tomorrow night, as in the group Two Tons of Steel ... But they're another story ... Between here and Austin are some outta' sight bands and places to see and hear them ... And the South Austin Jug Band has been making the rounds and rising in this part of the world for about 18-20 months or so now ... They are an unbelievable collection of five young string players ... And I do mean young as I just found out while talking to the bass player at a break last Wednesday eve that the fiddle player is all of 19.
If I told you they were a bluegrass band, it would probably turn many of you off ... But you've really got to hear them and see them live to appreciate their true style of music ... Most people think Earl Scruggs or Ralph Stanley when they hear the word "bluegrass," and the SAJB will cover some of those more traditional tunes ... But they have their own unique sound and write most of the music they perform.
Right now they're on a little mini-tour through the SW sort of having a 3-week lovefest with the first release of a studio CD ... They are being produced by a legend in the Austin music scene, Lloyd Maines ... You may not know him, probably heard of his daughter ... She's the Dixie Chick with the fat butt and the even fatter mouth.
But Lloyd Maines is more a resepcted name in Texas nowadays, and I can promise you this group will make it ... If they happen to come through your area, do your ears a favor and go listen.
