Yankees RHP Mussina named AL Player of the Week
August 18, 2003NEW YORK (Ticker) - New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina, who fired 17 scoreless innings in two starts, was named American League Player of the Week on Monday.
Mussina allowed just four hits in eight scoreless innings last Tuesday in a 6-0 victory at Kansas City. He followed that up by firing a three-hit shutout on Sunday at Baltimore, striking out nine batters and failing to issue a walk against his former team.
The righthander became the fourth Yankee and second pitcher from New York to win the Player of the Week Award this year. Roger Clemens earned the distinction on June 16 and rookie outfielder Hideki Matsui was honored two weeks later. Second baseman Alfonso Soriano received the first Player of the Week Award this year.
Other players considered for the award were the Yankees' Jorge Posada, Texas' Alex Rodriguez, Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki, Oakland's Terrence Long, Cleveland's Travis Hafner Tampa Bay's Travis Lee, Minnesota's Matthew LeCroy and Anaheim Angels teammates Adam Kennedy and Chone Figgins.
Other pitchers receiving votes were Oakland's Tim Hudson, Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia and Seattle's Freddy Garcia.
