Mixing holiday cheer with baseball spirit, the Phillies held their 17th annual Holiday Fair, an exclusive event for season ticket holders, today at Veterans Stadium.
Fans in attendance were able to take part in a "Question & Answer" session with left fielder Pat Burrell, manager Larry Bowa, General Manager Ed Wade and Assistant GM Mike Arbuckle.
To no one's surprise, the hot topic of the day was Scott Rolen and his pending status with the club. After considering several trade offers for Rolen during the recently-completed Winter Meetings, Wade told today's crowds that he "expects Rolen to be the Phillies' third baseman in 2002."
Wade also added that the club is continuing their efforts to acquire - via trade or free agency - an experienced starting pitcher. He continued by running through some of the names still available in the free agent market, including Terry Adams, Albie Lopez, Aaron Sele and Hideo Nomo.
Former first baseman and current Reading coach Rico Brogna, along with Assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr., were in the Phillies clubhouse meeting and greeting fans.
Nelson Figueroa was also on hand selling his self-designed T-shirts to benefit the September 11th Fund. Just in the morning session alone, Figueroa raised $5,213.
The Fair was split up into two sessions, the morning session from 9:00 a.m. to noon and the afternoon session from 1:30-4:30. Over 11,500 tickets were distributed for the event and over 6,000 attended.
