Phillies notebook: Non-roster invitees announced
Phillies Media Relations
Assistant General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has announced four players who have been invited to Spring Training as non-roster players:
David Doster (INF) Doster is returning to the Phillies organization after playing in Japan this past season for the Yokohama Baystars, where he hit .272 with 9 home runs and 27 RBI. The 31-year-old was originally selected by the Phillies in the 27th round of the June, 1993 draft and spent every professional season but the last one with the organization, including the entire 1999 season on the Phillies major league roster.
Dave Hollins (INF/OF) Former All-Star third baseman Hollins returns to the Phillies and the National League for the first time since being traded to the Red Sox during the 1995 season. The 35-year-old appeared in two games for Cleveland last season, but spent most of the year with AAA Buffalo. In 89 games with the Bisons, Hollins hit .272 with 16 home runs and 67 RBI. His first tour of duty with the Phillies was from 1990-95. Hollins' best season was 1992, when he hit 27 home runs with 93 RBI.
Todd Pratt (C) Pratt will compete for the backup catcher's job behind the returning Mike Lieberthal. Last season, Pratt, 34, hit .204 with two home runs for the Phillies after coming to the team in a late-July trade with the Mets.
Amaury Telemaco (RHP) Pitching for the Phillies as both a starter and reliever in 2001, the versatile Telemaco got off to a 5-1 start, which included his first major league complete game, a 6-1 win over the Mets on June 6. Telemaco, 27, finished the season on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain after being sent to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in late July. He had surgery on his shoulder in September.
Additionally, the club signed righthanded pitcher Kenneth Pumphrey and first baseman Patrick Williams as minor league free agents. Pumphrey spent last season in the Twins minor league system. The 25-year-old split the season between AA New Britain and AAA Edmonton. His combined totals were 9-8, 4.07 ERA, including going 8-2, 2.88 ERA with New Britain, where he spent the majority of his season. Williams, 24, appeared in just 38 games last year for AA San Antonio (Mariners), where he hit .200 with nine doubles as a first baseman/DH. He began the season with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the independent Northern League, where he appeared in nine games. Both players will report to minor league camp.
HOLIDAY FAIR WRAP-UP
The Phillies annual Holiday Fair, held exclusively for season ticket holders, was a huge success. Saturday's morning session, which attracted 3,478 fans, was the highest-attended session in five years and the day's total attendance of 6,204 was the highest since the organization began the two-session format in 1998. Additionally, Nelson Figueroa raised over $10,000 for the September 11th Fund through the sale of his self-designed t-shirts.
MUSSER DEEMED A "GOOD GUY"
Andy Musser will be the recipient of the 2001 "Media Good Guy" award at the 98th annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association banquet on January 31, 2002 at the Cherry Hill Hilton. Musser, a Phillies broadcaster for 25 years, officially retired this past season after calling called his final game on Wednesday, October 3rd in Atlanta. Last year's recipient was center fielder Doug Glanville.
REMEMBER THE FIGHTINS
Remember the Fightins, a retrospective of the Phillies emotional 2001 season, will be televised on Comcast SportsNet this Saturday, December 22, at noon. The show, produced by Phillies Emmy award-winning videographer Dan Stephenson and Kevin Camiscioli, takes a look back at all the great moments from this past season and provides a behind-the-scenes look that you can't find anywhere else.
COMMUNITY CORNER
Larry Bowa will be joined today by Rheal and Lucienne Cormier, Ed Wade, Ruben Amaro Jr., Bill Giles and Dickie Noles in serving a holiday dinner at the Bethesda Project Homeless Facility, located at 722 N. Broad St. The dinner will be prepared by members of the Phillies front office staff. 2002 marks the second consecutive year the Phillies have donated a holiday dinner to the Bethesda Project.
Last night, the Phillies donated 50 knit caps for a group of Sudanese refugees living in the Philadelphia region. City Councilman Jim Kenney hosted a holiday party for the refugees at the Irish Pub.
