Champions League Qualifier
Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium, Graz, Austria
Tuesday, 12 August, 2003
"Piece of cake", was Rafaël van der Vaart's answer to a reporter who asked him for a brief comment on Ajax's Champions League qualifier at Grazer AK. He said it with an eye-wink, you'd think, but Ajax played as if they really expected 'GAK' to be a piece of cake. The wayward Amsterdammers escaped from Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium with a very lucky 1-1 draw. The Austrians deserved much more in a game which Ajax would have lost if it wasn't for a brilliant Wesley Sneijder free-kick in the 79th minute.

"I'm satisfied with the result, but not with our play", said Ronald Koeman after the game with a great sense of understatement. Only three players on his team played a good game: goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, goalscorer Wesley Sneijder and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had an aggressive and determined half-hour as a substitute. Three others (newcomers Grygera, Escudé and Sonck) can not yet be blamed for their inability to take their team by the hand. The rest should feel ashamed of themselves. Key players such as Van der Vaart, Pienaar, Trabelsi and Maxwell in particular had a complete non-performance.
The intentions of the Austrian underdog were crystal clear from the start. Having played five league games already they were fitter and more aggressive than the Ajacieden. They were well organized, determined and they ruled in the air. Ajax played wearily and was totally unable to let the ball circulate at 'Ajax pace'. The first fifteen minutes were a serious warning. Several high crosses dangerously grazed the foreheads of totally unmarked GAK players. A Milinkovic header went inches wide. Young striker Naumoski stole stole the ball of a dreaming Hatem Trabelsi's foot and saw his curving shot hit the post.
It must be said that Ajax - in spite of its poor play - missed two huge chances as well in this phase. On both occasions Wesley Sonck gave the fine, low cross, first providing Wamberto with an 'unmissable' chance (which he missed), then trying to reach Rafaël van der Vaart, who saw a defender clear off the goal-line a split-second before he could slide the ball home.
Good chances, indeed, but the hosts had the game in hand. Given the fact that Ajax lost almost every physical air duel it was a matter of time for GAK to score that way. It happened ten minutes into the second half, as defender Emanuel Pogatetz was totally unmarked on a Dollinger free-kick - and only had to nod to set Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium on fire: 1-0 (56').

What to do? No-one on the Ajax bench really seemed to know. Almost every Ajax player deserved to be replaced. Pienaar and Sonck were the unlucky ones, but only one of their replacements managed to bring something extra: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who made some wrong decisions in his actions, but did bring the aggression Ajax was lacking. The Swede chose the shortest way to goal whenever he received the ball and came close to scoring with a low shot toward the corner and a merciless volley on goalkeeper Schranz's fists. It is typical, however, that Ajax never came as close to scoring as two minutes before Pogatetz's goal: in an attempt to clear he headed an Ajax cross against the post of his own goal.
As the minutes of weak, weary Ajax football ticked away it seemed like Ajax was going to have to accept a 1-0 defeat - and the challenge to score twice in the Amsterdam ArenA on the 27th. But the reality of modern football can be cruel, and in this case it was to Grazer AK. Wesley Sneijder, the only Ajacied to have shown initiative throughout the game, brilliantly curled a free-kick from the corner of the penalty box into the upper ninety. The stunning, 24-carate free-kick came totally out of nowhere and instantly changed everything for GAK: instead of having the opportunity to comfortably lean back, the Austrians will now have to score at least once in the ArenA. What a setback for them, after literally Ajax's only moment of brilliance in 90 minutes' time, quite typically from a free-kick.

Rafaël van der Vaart - man of the pre-game "piece of cake" remark - had changed his tone of voice as he was interviewed on the pitch after the game: "This was not good. Very poor indeed. We just didn't have our day." Football players will never admit it, but the reason why Ajax got in trouble against this hard working, but technically mediocre Austrian team was plain simple: pure underestimation. The team was 'rewarded' for it with a result that wasn't too bad after all. (MP)

Holland Casino Eredivisie
Gelredome, Arnhem
Sunday, 17 August, 2003
Ajax had a succesful start of the 2003-2004 Eredivisie, clinching the full three points in the traditionally tough road game at Vitesse. However, a late whim by Wesley Sneijder was (once again) required: 1-2. The hosts would have deserved the draw in a game that saw a hatful of open scoring chances for both sides.
Several unexpected problems occur in Ajax's first 'real' games of the season, such as injuries for a quartet of prominent players (Galásek, Litmanen, O'Brien and in Arnhem also Trabelsi), as well as the unexpectedly poor form of some of last season's key figures, of which Steven Pienaar and Rafaël van der Vaart are the most obvious cases. Add this to the expected problems (the process of adjustment of all of the newcomers except the already convincing Julien Escudé) and the all but easy start to the new European and domestic campaigns is explained.

In Arnhem's Gelredome the Amsterdammers won a few corners in the early minutes and saw Wesley Sonck come close to scoring, but could easily have been two or three goals down after 20 minutes. In reality it was just a single one. Ajax had no answer to Vitesse's simple, but very effective play: almost every ball was kicked toward the bald crown of Belgian giant Bob Peeters, who would flick the ball on to the unstoppable Matthew Amoah, who was constantly faster and more determined than his Ajax marksmen.
No wonder that the best chances in the opening phase were for the hosts. Amoah (on a Claessens thru-pass) lost his face-to-face rendez-vous with Bogdan Lobont, whereas Gert Claessens saw his finishing attempt go millimetres wide. Vitesse's opening goal (a fine Fränkel cross was nodded home by Amoah) was inevitable and came early: in the 13th minute.
When Ajax finally started playing better the lucky equalizer was already on the score-board. Defender Purrel Fränkel was put in such a tight spot by an onstorming Wesley Sonck that he surprised his own goalkeeper with an inaccurate backpass: 1-1 (22').
In the following minutes Amoah hit the post full-on with a furious volley and Steven Pienaar tested the cross-bar in the counter-attack. There was no lack of chances or spectacular moments in Gelredome. What was missing, though, was good football by Ajax. The team's play lacked pace and was mostly too predictable, in spite of the presence of Koeman's striker couple of preference: Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wesley Sonck, who started together for the first time.
The Belgian had a considerably better game than the Swede, who drew attention by hitting Bert Konterman with his notorious elbow. TV footage did not at all prove that it was intentional, but Zlatan's reputation was enough to outrage the home crowd. The Swede had the chance to put Ajax in the lead on a perfect Sonck cross in the 55th minute, but he once again showed that he can do anything with a ball except heading: he clumsily nodded wide with the side of his head. "Sonck had his best game so far", said Ronald Koeman after the game. "He felt more comfortable and free."

Rafaël van der Vaart, who had yet another dreadful game, should have put Ajax in the lead a minute before the half time break, but failed eye to eye with goalkeeper Van Fessem. Vitesse had its chances as well (Bert Konterman headed wide), but in the second half Ajax finally dictated the game and created the better chances. The very best of them all was for former Vitesse man Victor Sikora, who pushed a perfect Van der Vaart cross inches wide.
The first half was for Vitesse, the second half for Ajax. The number of chances was in almost perfect balance. A 1-1 draw would have been a fair result, but the hosts ended up paying the ultimate price for their inability to escape from Ajax's hold in the final minutes. Typically, the determination of Ajax's most active and hard-working man brought the Amsterdammers the late and not entirely deserved win. Wesley Sneijder picked up the ball amidst total miscommunication in the Vitesse defense and pushed it past goalkeeper Van Fessem: 1-2 (87'). The despairing home side claimed that Sneijder was offside, but the midfielder was launched by no-one else than himself.
Koeman: "This team is not rock-solid yet. Winning a game like this in this phase is a very good thing." Especially, we may add, if champions PSV lose two points at Roda JC (2-2). Feyenoord won its first home fixture against NEC (2-1), but has a tough away game at Heerenveen coming up. For Ajax the next two fixtures may not be a problem: both RBC Roosendaal (away, Saturday) an FC Zwolle (home, August 31) are regarded as relegation candidates. (MP)

Ajax wins at RBC, but poor form worries Koeman

Holland Casino Eredivisie
Vast & Goed Stadium, Roosendaal
Saturday, 23 August, 2003
After last week's win in Gelredome several Dutch journalists suggested that the game in Gelredome was Ajax's poorest since the arrival of coach Ronald Koeman. This Saturday, after the Eredivisie match at RBC Roosendaal, Koeman had to correct them: "Not last week's game, but this one was the poorest." Yet, a single, rather lucky goal by Tom Soetaers (his forst for Ajax) was enough for an all but convincing win (0-1) and the pleasant situation that after two Eredivisie matchdays Ajax is the only side of the 'Big Three' with a 100% score. After PSV's draw at Roda JC last week, Feyenoord stumbled in Heerenveen this weekend.
Ajax's poor form was unexpected after a fine pre-season campaign with a highly promising climax at the Amsterdam Tournament. However, evern since it's 'for real' the team has been scraping and struggling, booking fine results in a rather fortunate way.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/soetaers-082303-ajaxnl.jpg"

The story continued in Roosendaal, where Galásek, Litmanen, Pienaar and O'Brien were absent as expected, Ibrahimovic was kept on the bench due to a minor injury, but Hatem Trabelsi surprisingly belonged to the starting eleven. Just like Steven Pienaar the Tunisian was granted a week off, but after some treatment by the Tunisia medical staff the right fullback offered his services to Koeman himself.
The game had a lot in common with the recent fixtures in Graz and Arnhem: the Amsterdammers had a weary and slow start, of which the hosts could have taken advatage within three minutes' time, as striker Sammy Youssouf had an open chance but found Lobont on his way. A diagonal shot of Ajax loanee Pius Ikedia was pushed wide Lobont, who saved his team in the opening minutes.
It was, indeed, the same old story: the opposition was simply more determined, more accurate in its passing, more creative - simply better than Ajax, in fact. Once again Julien Escudé was the only exception: the Frenchman built up stylishly, was well concentrated and kept the Ajax defense upright throughout the game. Zdenek Grygera and Wesley Sonck had good games as well, although the latter seemed to let his head hang down in the final half hour, in which the - once again - selfish, slow and arrogant Rafaël van der Vaart ignored him completely, even when he was as free as a bird in front of goal.
Ajax's first moment of danger was in the 16th minute as goalkeeper Aerts couldn't hold on to a Soetaers header and Sonck was half an inch too short to convert the rebound. It took Ajax 35 minutes to show the crows its first fast, accurate attacking combination. It had the maximum effect immediately: only two minutes after RBC's Sidney Lammens almost surprised Lobont with a 'banana shot' into the near post's upper ninety, Tom Soetaers set up a speedy attack, got the ball back from Maxwell and released a hard, low shot from the left flank. The Flemish newcomer saw the ball disappear into the RBC goal deflected by goalkeeper Aerts' leg: 0-1 (35').

One of the very few Ajax players whom Ronald Koeman
thought had a good game: Zdenek Grygera. [Photo: ANP]
Ajax's play seemed to improve in the second half: there was a better spirit and combinations were faster. But good football? Or chances? Not really. The only exciting moments from an Ajax perspective were three moments on which Ajax claimed a penalty. They were right on only one occasion. Victor Sikora fell over too easily, Hatem Trabelsi took a dive so obviously that he was booked for it. However, referee Wegereef should have seen that Nigel de Jong was mown down. He did deserve a penalty, but Ajax had apparently run out of credit.
RBC Roosendaal, generally regarded as a candidate for relegation, did not gave up and came close to equalizing on a Youssouf header and a Lammens free-kick, which grazed Lobont's fingers and the outside of the post. Ajax, quite typically, got its only chances on counter-attacks: Wesley Sonck was unlucky as he resolutely fired past Aerts, but hit the post. The second goal of the night could also have easily fallen on the other end, especially as Brazilian midfielder Tininho's low free-kick grazed the Ajax wall and trickled inches wide in the last minute.
During the post-game press-conference Ronald Koeman shook his head in dissatisfaction: "Tom Soetaers was okay and Julien Escudé and Zdenek Grygera had a good game. The rest remained below their usual level of play (...) We did not live up to our own quality standards in many ways. Grazer AK lost this weekend, so they will be well awake again on Wednesday. In a way it would have been better if we'd lost last week, or this week. Perhaps that would have brought our sharpness back. The players will really have to see the point now, otherwise it's too late. I am extremely dissatisfied about this game, and it worries me."
The Ajax coach will have three days of training to bring this message across. (MP)

Yikes.
They advance to the group stage now.
And about Koeman? Yeah, I've seen some video, but I don't remember seeing him live...unless I might have seen him playing for Feijnoord once or twice...

Ajax advance to group stage on 'silver' Galásek penalty

Champions League Qualifier
Amsterdam ArenA, Amsterdam
Wednesday, 27 August, 2003
Relief in the Amsterdam ArenA: thanks to a Tomás Galásek a penalty in the first half of extra time, Ajax finally managed to brush the Austrians of Grazer AK aside. Just like the away leg a fortnight ago, the game at the ArenA ended in a 1-1 draw, so that UEFA's new 'silver goal' rule came into effect for the first time in an Ajax game: when a goal is scored in extra time, the 15-minute half in which it was scored must be finished. The fortunate moment for the Amsterdammers came in the 104th minute, as Wamberto lifted the ball against the hand of GAK's Ehmann. Tomás Galásek, who returned from an injury and was the great leader of his team, didn't fail, making for a narrow escape to the main stage of the Champions League.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/galasek-082703-ajaxnl.jpg">

Ajax made best use of the new 'silver goal' rule by scoring in the 13th minute of the first half of extra time, so that the game was practically over and the silver goal almost had the effect of a 'golden' one. It was a 'golden goal' for Ajax' treasurer Jeroen Slop in particular, as Ajax will once again be in the draw for the lucrative Champions League circus on Thursday. Last year, over-all proceedings of the Champions League campaign were approximately 20 million euros for Ajax.
If only for that reason, the result was all that counted in the encounter with Grazer AK. However, those interested in high quality football must have had two dreadful evenings, in Graz as well as in Amsterdam. Although Ajax's play was much better than in Austria, Ajax had yet another poor match and could consider itself lucky that GAK striker Roland Kollmann did not give Ajax the knock-out punch early in the second half.
He could have done so on two occasions in less than three minutes' time, face to face with Lobont. Kollmann produced the equalizer just before half time, as an enormous misjudgment by Julien Escudé gave Kollmann a free passage to Bogdan Lobont. The tall striker, who was deemed not good enough two years ago by FC Twente, deftly fired the ball into the upper corner, leaving Lobont no chance (40').
The equalizer was a bitter disappointment for Ajax. The Amsterdammers had a great start, with a quick 1-0 by Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a result: Maxwell controlled the ball on his chest on the left flank and volleyed an outstanding cross pass to an unmarked Ibrahimovic, who only needed to contribute a simple nod to capitalize: 1-0 (15').
Ajax was certainly the better team in the opening phase, and it didn't look like Grazer AK would be too much of a threat this evening. But their counter attacks got more dangerous as the first half ticked away. Big chances for Ramusch and Ehmann were serious warnings. On both occasions Julien Escudé saved Ajax with good interventions on goal-line. How unfortunate for the Frenchman that he later made the mistake (or did he slip...?) that led to the equalizer.
The equalizer seemed to paralyze the Amsterdammers completely. The last five minutes of the first half and the first ten of the second were dramatic and could easily have brought a second Austrian goal that would probably have been fatal. Due to the away-goals rule, Ajax would then have required two more goals in less than one half of play to advance.
Luckily for the red and white, Ronald Koeman's second half substitutions made the team stronger: Wesley Sneijder replaced the weak Jelle Van Damme, and fifteen minutes later Wamberto took over for the invisible Victor Sikora. The short Brazilian almost had a dream start, as the first attack which involved him brought him face to face with goalkeeper Schranz. Wamberto's hesitated too long and saw his attempt intercepted.
In the last 25 minutes the game got more aggressive -- and sometimes nasty. The Austrians in particular committed one foul after the other, resulting in yellow cards for Milinkovic, Pogatetz, Naumoski and Pötscher. The latter was rather unlucky: his push against Wamberto, just before the end of the regular time, wasn't a clear foul, but the yellow card given set up his later dismissal. His second yellow card was a fact in the opening minutes of extra time. Exit Pötscher.
By then, Grazer AK was no longer as lethally dangerous as in the first part of the match. Their energy seemed to have vanished, and with only ten players left it was clear that if one team would score a goal, it would be Ajax. The questions was: who was going to find the net for Ajax? Real chances were rarely created, and last year's 'Boy Wonder', Rafaël van der Vaart, had another of his mediocre, egocentric days.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/ibrahimovic-082703-anp.jpg">
Zlatan Ibrahimoviç celebrates his 15th-minute goal. [Photo: ANP]
It was therefore not surprising that the decisive strike came from the penalty spot. In its previous matches against Grazer AK (away), Vitesse and RBC Roosendaal, Ajax was hardly able to produce a 'real' goal. All goals were scored from dead-ball situations or required a decisive touch by an opponent. This time a rather clumsy handball led to the penalty (and a second dismissal for a GAK player, in this case Ehmann), although it has to be said that Wamberto seemed to have deserved a penalty earlier on, as he was brought down inside the penalty box. For a moment it seemed like Ibrahimovic was going to take the penalty, until Tomás Galásek stepped forward -- and made no mistake.
After two poor matches against Grazer AK plus two weak league performances, the good thing might be that expectations are back to realistic levels. Ajax's underdog position made the previous run so succesful. And that's exactly what Ajax is again this year: an underdog, a dark horse in the competition. Wesley Sneijder, after the game: "This was a very important match for us. We made it, so the pressure has more or less disapeared now." Now that the pressure is gone, it is to be hoped that the fans will finally get to see some fluent play in the next matches. (BV)

Pienaar goal enough for bleak win over FC Zwolle

Holland Casino Eredivisie
Amsterdam ArenA, Amsterdam
Sunday, 31 August, 2003
Ronald Koeman's orders prior to the Eredivisie home game against FC Zwolle were simple: 'Winning and showing better football'. Ajax succeeded in the first, but - after a fairly good first half hour - once again miserably failed in the latter. In fact, today's second half was probably Ajax's weakest so far. Any opponent with just a tad more belief in its own ability would have notched a point from the ArenA. Against FC Zwolle, however, a Steven Pienaar goal was enough for a gray, utterly uninspired win: 1-0.
"It was substandard again", was Koeman's brief analysis after the game. It was an understatement. In fact, the bleak parody of a football game that was Ajax vs FC Zwolle was the Dutch Eredivisie at its most stultifying: a high quality top side struggling hardly able to keep itself awake, against a relegation candidate (Zwolle didn't claim a single point so far and didn't even produce a goal yet) that could have easily stolen a victory from the ArenA by entering the pitch armed to the teeth, fully aware of its chances.

FC Zwolle, however, was so typically Dutch it would drive the average football fan crazy: the side of former Ajax coach-assistant Peter Boeve played pretty well and showed fine combination play throughout, but was utterly harmless upfront and never seemed to seriously believe in an upset. Their determiniation melted away once the team came close to Ajax's penalty area, there was no desperate all-or-nothing offensive in the final minutes and not a single merciless foul in an attempt to set the game on fire. For some reason Boeve was proud of his team's performance after the game. How naive. Any British lower division side would have eaten Ajax alive today, or at least have created major unrest in the Ajax defense. Aggression is an underrated quality in football in general - and Dutch football in particular.
Quite ironically, FC Zwolle never came as close to scoring as in the 15th minute, as Petri Pasanen accidentally slammed the ball against his own cross-bar. Otherwise, there were a few harmless attempts with the head by Bulgarian striker Hristov and one real chance for Jasar Takak in the 79th minute. Well, 'real chance'? Ajax managed to deal with the situation in a 'fair play way': Maxwell came to rescue in the nick of time, just as Takak was going to pull the trigger.
Otherwise the meandering Amsterdammers could afford to sleepwalk for an hour. No pace, no ideas. It says a lot about the true weakness of the opposition that Ajax had its scoring chances in spite of it all.
It must be said, however, that Ajax's start was rather promising. At least the team seemed determined in the opening phase, in which Zdenek Grygera showed his best play for Ajax so far. The energetic first 30 minutes culminated in the gracious opening goal. A long ball from the back was flicked on with the heel by Rafaël van der Vaart and with the head by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, before Steven Pienaar push it past goalkeeper Van der Werff (32').
The crowd's hopes that the Ajax engine was finally starting to run properly, however, turned out to be in vain. Two of Ajax's best in the opening phase were Zdenek Grygera and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the Amsterdammers 'lost' both of those players: Grygera collided head-to-head with Zwolle's Ivan Cvetkov and had to be replaced. Diagnosis in hospital: a concussion of yet unknown seriousness. Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, also 'disappeared' from the game, albeit not physically but mentally. In the second half the Swede looked as slow and clumsy as in his first Ajax year.
It led to a couple of highly remarkable substitutions by Koeman, who took off both Ibrahimovic and - it had to happen one day - Rafaël van der Vaart, who is playing against himself so far this season. The captain's armband around his arm seems to weigh 200 pounds. Van der Vaart passed it on to last Wednesday's Champions League hero, Tomás Galásek. Even he could not make the difference today.
Once again, the only positive exception was Julien Escudé, who once again showed that any suggestion that Ajax misses Cristian Chivu is plain ignorance. Escudé's replacing of the Romanian is the only positive Ajax news so far. Plus, of course, the results. Ajax played five games so far, all against mediocre opposition and without convincing a single time. Nevertheless, Ajax somehow won the jackpot: admission to the Champions League and a 100% score in the Eredivisie. It's flabbergasting when you think about it.
The only other team to have won all of its games (and without conceding a single goal) is RKC Waalwijk. This fact makes Ajax's next Eredivisie match, at home against RKC on 13 September, a top fixture in which the top slot on the table is directly at stake. Three days later AC Milan awaits Ajax in San Siro. If the Ajax players don't pick up some form very soon (in this week's Euro 2004 qualifiers, for example) the first truly traumatic games of the season may well be coming up next. (MP)
"Thank you, Sjakie!"
The highlight of the day followed immediately after the game, as Ajax said goodbye to its equipment manager and jack-of-all-trades: Sjaak Wolfs, who officially worked for Ajax from 1975 to 2003, after years of 'unofficial' service. Ajax greats such as Rinus Michels, Danny Blind, Rob de Wit, Arnold Mühren and Bobby Haarms were there, as Sjakie entered the ArenA pitch holding the hands of two F-Side supporters, Mirjam and Joark.
There were speeches and gifts for the immortal fan mascotte, who made his lap of honour around the pitch on a mini-car, to end up on a wooden bench directly in front of the F-Side. During the F-Side's moving hommage Sjakie was joined by the entire Ajax-1 squad. The man himself took the microphone very briefly, saying with breaking voice: "Fantastic people. Fantastic people. Fantastic people. Be sure to keep it like that."
Sjakie Wolfs was assigned a special 'seat of honour' on the main stand of the ArenA, from which he will watch his Ajax play from now on. (MP)

We won't know whether Ajax is ready for AC Milan before the actual game on Tuesday, but one thing's for sure: the two week break, during which several Ajacieden went 'on tour' with their national teams, was good for Ajax. The team picked up some form and had its best game by far of the new season against RKC Waalwijk this Saturday. RKC (the only other Eredivisie side to have won its first three games straight) was brushed aside in convincing style: 4-1. As a result, Ajax is now the league leader and the only remaining side with a 100% record.

The spell is broken: Wesley Sonck celebrates
his first goal for Ajax. [Photo: Gerard van Hees/Ajax.nl]
Much to the delight of Ronald Koeman, most of his men enjoyed a self-confidence boost while playing for their countries - and returned to Amsterdam with a smile: Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted two goals for Sweden against San Marino and qualified for Euro 2004, Tomás Galásek and Zdenek Grygera secured their ticket to Portugal with the Czech Republic, Wesley Sonck kept Belgium in the race for qualification by scoring both goals against Croatia (2-1). Rafaël van der Vaart, by contrast, stumbled painfully with Holland in Prague, but was the best man in orange and scored his first two goals for his country.
It was a major push in the right direction, judging by their performance against RKC Waalwijk. Van der Vaart, in particular, seemed re-born. Koeman pulled him back to his 'good old' position in midfield and the young captain immediately returned to his form of last season, showing some stunning individual moves and rushes. Also, the game saw the first goals of the season for both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wesley Sonck, always psychologically important for a central forward. More good news: Hatem Trabelsi is fully recovered and returned to the squad. He started on the bench, while his stand-in, Nigel de Jong, had his best game for Ajax in many months. It could, with AC Milan coming up, not have been better.
Ajax played fine football from the start, and felt that the atmosphere in the almost solidly packed ArenA got better and better along the way. Bogdan Lobont had touched the ball exactly once when Ajax took the lead: Maxwell set up an attack through the middle, picked up his own pass and slipped past goalkeeper Sinouh calmly and gracefully, underscoring that he has become one of Ajax's best: 1-0 (21').
The deal was practically done six minutes later as Rafaël van der Vaart delighted the crowd with some beautiful moves and provided Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a perfect cross. The Swede is not known as a good header, but did everything right this time. His timing, his jump, his body movement and the way he slammed his forehead against the ball - there was nothing Sinouh could do about it: 2-0 (27').
The first half was better than anyone at the ArenA expected based on Ajax's first weeks of Eredivisie play. It was concluded with an absolutely stunning Van der Vaart run across the pitch. It was one of those displays of skill and individual ability that make it tempting to compare football to ballet-dancing. The names of Johan Cruijff and Marco van Basten immediately sprang to mind. The slow, trudging, head-shaking Van der Vaart we saw in recent games was instantly forgotten.
RKC Waalwijk still hadn't created a single chance when Ajax dealt the decisive blow. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was brought down by Teixeira directly from kick off. Inside the penalty box, decided referee Roelof Luinge, but he was mistaken. Tomás Galásek converted. The unlucky RKC defender to commit the foul - Virgilio Teixeira - was booked for the second time only two minutes later, so that ten RKC players had to keep Ajax from turning the game into a goal-scoring festival. "I feared for a disaster", said RKC coach Martin Jol after the game. "For a while I really feared it was going to be six or seven."
This didn't happen. In fact, RKC created its first and only two major chances of the game with ten players. Rick Hoogendorp (free header chance) and Patrick van Diemen (face-to-face with Lobont) did not convert, so that the fourth goal of the evening was - yet again - an Ajax production. Substitute Victor Sikora - who otherwise proved once again that he's not good enough for Ajax - had a fine run on the right flank. He pulled the ball back to the near post and there he was: Wesley Sonck, pushing home with his left for his first official Ajax goal: 4-0 (62')
RKC got its consolation goal immediately from kick off, as Lobont managed to push a Hoogendorp free-kick against the post with his fingertips, but an unmarked Khalid Boulahrouz converted the rebound. It did not bring the yellow and blue back into game. Ajax shifted to a lower gear in the final twenty minutes. No more goals were scored and hardly any chancec created, but there were alternative reasons for applause: Hatem Trabelsi returned to Ajax-1 action after a few weeks of injuries and young Romanian Nicolae Mitea made his official Ajax-1 debut. As referee Roelof Luinge's final whistle resounded, Ajax officially was the league leader in the Eredivisie, for the first time since 14 December 2002.
"It was a pity we didn't really push through", said Ronald Koeman after the game. "I thought we played fairly well in the first half, with good goals and better play than in the previous game. This result give us faith for Tuesday, although I must say we don't really need that. Against Milan we can play freely. Anything we accomplish over there would be a bonus." (MP)

Champions League, Group Stage
Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, Milan, Italy
Tuesday, 16 September, 2003
The most urgent question on the mind of every Ajax supporter was finally answered in Milan on Tuesday: is this season's Ajax team as good as last season's team that made it to the quarter finals of the Champions League? Everyone who saw Ajax play AC Milan in San Siro stadium will agree that the answer to this question is 'yes'. Ajax was as good as last year - and in several ways even better. The result, however, was frustrating once again: Inzaghi 1, Ajax 0. Thanks to the undisputed Man of the Match: Milan's Brazilian goalkeeper, Dida.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/trabelsi-091603-anp.jpg">

It seems to be an unwritten football law: you play bravely, you create chances, you miss a few of them, but then Inzaghi scores and you lose. Ajax was Milan's equal during its third Champions League visit to San Siro in less than one years' time, but football itself is an irrelevant factor in beating AC Milan. Whoever wants to lay claim to the three points against the 2003 Champions League winners will have to eliminate strikers 'Sheva' (Andriy Shevchenko) and 'Pippo' (Filippo Inzaghi) for 90 minutes - plus stoppage time. The quality of the duo makes this almost impossible. This time the fatal moment for the visitors came in the 67th minute: counter attack, low shot Shevchenko to which Lobont can't hold on, rebound Inzaghi, 1-0.
In the preceding 66 minutes Ajax did everything right, even more so than in last season's dramatic quarter final. The team was calm and self-assured, made fewer defensive mistakes, created more chances itself and - despite two phases in which Milan enjoyed more possession - never seemed to lose control. Wesley Sonck was about the only Ajacied who had a disappointing performance. Otherwise the formation seemed to 'work': Hatem Trabelsi's rushes, Petri Pasanen's stalwart performance, the diligence in midfield of Galásek and Yakubu. Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovic worked hard upfront and somehow played much better than it seemed: he was constantly ready to receive the ball, protected it well amidst a multitude of defenders and usually did something intelligent with it.
On more occasions than in April the Amsterdammers came close to scoring. But Dida, AC Milan's Brazilian goalkeeper, had the game of his life: he tipped a Rafaël van der Vaart free-kick over his goal via the cross-bar, punched two Zlatan Ibrahimovic headers out of his goal and chose the right position as Hatem Trabelsi rushed all the way through the Milan defence from the right flank, but tried to score from a very tight angle instead of pulling back to the totally unmarked Ibrahimovic and Sonck.
AC Milan vs Ajax was, once again, a remarkably 'open' game. The guests had their moments as well. Gattuso had a free shotting chance from some 20 metres and referee Michel could have easily given a penalty as Inzaghi was pulled down by Julien Escudé in the Ajax penalty box. The best field players for the Italians, however, were their central man in midfield, Kaka, and Andriy Shevchenko, who constantly proved to be of absolute world-class. On several occasions a quick turn, with an Ajax defender in his back, allowed him to release low shots. They were never too dangerous, until one of them turned out to be fatal.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/vandervaart-091603-ajaxnl.jpg">

Milan's goal came less than one minute after Ajax had created its best chance so far. Trabelsi delivered the ball to Ibrahimovic, who held on to it well and passed to Pienaar at exactly the right moment. The South-African attempted to score with an artistic backward flick, but saw Dida save.
However, the very best chance of the evening for Ajax was yet to come. Four minutes into stoppage time, to be precise, the minute in which Inzaghi and Jon-Dahl Tomasson destroyed Ajax's semi-final hopes in April. After AC Milan had had chances to double the score in regulation (including a Kaká attempt from a tight angle that surprised Lobont and hit the post), not the Italians but Ajax could have dealt the devastating blow this time: Trabelsi concluded yet another of his runs with a fine cross, which was totally missed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and suddenly ended right in front of Rafaël van der Vaart, totally unmarked, two yards away from Dida's goal. The Ajax captain's hard, well-controlled shot would have gone in against every other goalkeeper than Dida, who miraculously managed to punch the ball wide in a desperate dive.
Second later the triumphant fists of ten AC Milan players (Gennaro Gattuso was sent off in the last minute for hitting Ibrahimovic in the face) were in the air, while Van der Vaart sank to his knees, shaking his head, covering his face with his hands. "I don't think I've ever missed such a chance before", he said after the game. Coach Ronald Koeman did not have something memorable to say either, although his brief analysis did sum it all up: "They scored. We didn't."
Ajax will once again have to make do with the praise from the press - and, after the disappointment has vanished, with the knowledge that they are easily good enough to make it to the next round if they continue to play like this. (MP)

It could have been such a great weekend for Ajax: rivals Feyenoord and PSV played each other in Rotterdam, while Ajax was to defend its top Eredivisie slot against an opponent with a thrilling UEFA Cup fixture at Newcastle United coming up. A great chance to do some good business, but it passed off very differently. Ajax received an unforgettable whipping from an NAC Breda side inspired by a vindictive Ajax loanee (Nourdin Boukhari) and an unchained Feyenoord cast-off (Johan Elmander): 4-2. Meanwhile, PSV clinched the three points in De Kuip (1-3) and leapfrogged Ajax in the table.

A quick peek into last season's Ajax Yearbook could have warned the team. The similarities are striking: almost exactly one year ago Ajax suffered an encouraging and unlucky 1-0 defeat in Milan. Three days later the poorly concentrated Amsterdammers were almost taken by surprise by an opportunistic NAC Breda side at the ArenA: 2-2. The differences: this time the creditable defeat was suffered at AC Milan instead of Inter, and the subsequent fixture against NAC Breda was an away game. The result was devastating.
Coach Ronald Koeman, who placed Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench due to his persistent groin injury and fielded Wesley Sneijder instead, could not believe his eyes: "I have never seen such disorder in our defense before." Indeed: just like last season in the ArenA, a lame Ajax side fell victim to a stunning string of defensive errors. The first one came so early (after only seven minutes) that Ajax was chasing shadows for the large part of the game. It started with Julien Escudé stepping out of his zone, attempting to clear a fairly low ball with the head which he had better put his boot against. No Ajax defender was marking his opponent, so that Johan Elmander could easily flick the ball on to an unmarked Nourdin Boukhari, who translated all of his frustration and disappointment into a beautiful volley with his right - and went totally out of his mind celebrating it: 1-0.
The remainder of the first half made clear what Ajax's problems were: a total lack of agression and fighting spirit, a lack of movement upfront, a lack of order in the back. The only real chance the Amsterdammers created was for Abubakari Yakubu, who stormed forward and was totally unmarked as a perfect Wesley Sneijder corner ended on his forehead. The defender, not used to getting major scoring chances, aimed too high.
At that point, by the way, NAC Breda should already have doubled the score. Boukhari was unstoppable in the opening phase. One of his fine runs was concluded with a perfect low cross, which Johan Elmander only had to tap against the nets. His touch was inaccurate, so that Bogdan Lobont could save. The Romanian never had as much work to do between the Ajax posts. He was, quite typically, by far the best Ajacied on the day.
Things had to change in the second half, so that Zlatan Ibrahimovic once again had to grit his teeth and play a half of football on painkillers. He had touched the ball exactly once when Julien Escudé laconically allowed Johan Elmander to steal the ball from him. There was no Ajax defender to be seen as the Swede, who was deemed to much of a dreamer by Feyenoord, stormed across the whole of Ajax's half and shot Ajax's good intentions to pieces: 2-0, less than 45 seconds into the second half.
In the following 20 minutes Ajax was staggering around like an unsteady boxer, about to collapse and hit the canvas. NAC Breda's 3-0 (a fine Elmander header) was inevitable, after which the hosts could have humiliated Ajax by a historic score. Referee Vink was blatantly wrong to disallow an Anouar Diba goal, after which Boukhari, Elmander and Slot came face-to-face with Bogdan Lobont in only a few minutes' time. The Romanian saved in great style on all three occasions.
Ajax was in despair and totally gave up hope as Rafaël van der Vaart and substitute Victor Sikora missed open chances to score. It was hopeless, so it seemed, but Ajax somehow came back into the game in two minutes' time, albeit more by good luck than by good judgement. It started with an embarrassing error of NAC's otherwise flawless Hungarian goalkeeper, Gabór Babos, who totally misjudged a harmless Sikora shot and let it slip through his fingers. A single Ajax goal did not seem to be too much of a problem for the yellow and black hosts, but this changed as Zlatan Ibrahimovic graciously tipped a fine Maxwell cross into the netting: 3-2, with no less than twenty minutes ahead!!
Ajax's collective non-performance is best illustrated by the fact that Ajax never came closer to the equalizer than a decent long range attempt by Wesley Sonck. Instead of taking full control, the Amsterdammers' play became cluttered and hasty. Arne Slot and substitute Ali Boussaboun could have sealed NAC's well-deserved victory considerably earlier than in the 93rd minute, in which Stefano Seedorf finally wrapped it up by calmly converting a simple counter-attack.
"We had a collective off-day and NAC took advantage of that", said Ronald Koeman after the game. Then, cynically: "Actually, they did not take advantage of it at all. If they had it would have been 7-1. 8-1 would have been possible. At a certain point I found myself thinking: in God's name, let's keep it down to 3-0. We did not at all deserve to get back into the game. It was very strange that we did." Koeman's NAC Breda colleague, Ton Lokhoff, flabbergasted: "If someone had told me we would get this many chances against Ajax, I would have told that person he were insane."
Ajax' first league stumble since 23 March of this year (2-0 at PSV) was an unusually embarrassing one. NAC Breda scored only four goals in its first four games, but was allowed by Ajax to double its total production, making for its second win in five games. Disgraceful, to say the very least. The chance to make up for it follows next Sunday, as the surprising #4 on the table - Willem II from Tilburg - visits the ArenA. (MP)

Champions League, Group Stage
Amsterdam Arena, Amsterdam
Wednesday, 01 October, 2003
There's no reason to be ashamed about a 1-0 defeat at AC Milan. However, Ajax's unlucky stumble at San Siro made Ajax's the first Champions League home fixture one that had to be won. And it was, as a remarkably mature and professional Ajax side saw Wesley Sonck became the 'Big Man' against the reigning champions of his fatherland: Club Brugge. Sonck, booed and whistled at by the 3,000 travelling Belgian fans, came face to face with goalkeeper Butina twice and netted on both occasions: 2-0.
Ajax's well deserved victory catapults the Amsterdam side from fourth to second in Group H. But that wasn't the best news on the night. Coach Ronald Koeman must have been particularly delighted by the impressive way in which Sonck passed his 'European exam' and - most of all - the calm, mature and professional way in which the three points were pocketed.

It must be said that the black-and-blue from Bruges were heavily battered by injuries and suspensions. Norwegian coach Trond Sollied had to miss out on his striker couple of preference (Sandy Martens and Andres Mendoza) as well as his creative 'number ten', Alin Stoica. Sollied had to improvise in offense and came up with a defensive formation in which his tall, strong countryman Bengt Sæternes was the lone striker, with Gert Verheyen playing directly behind him.
Sæternes, in particular, failed miserably and never was the 'target man' Sollied hoped he would be. 'Club' hardly made it to the Ajax half anyway in the opening phase, in which both Sonck and the hard-working Zlatan Ibrahimovic tested Butina's goalkeeping qualities with fine shots. Ajax's first real chance followed in the 11th minute and it was a bingo straight away: a Galásek pass was stylishly flicked on with the heel by Ibrahimovic, who sent Sonck on his way to Butina. The Belgian remained stone cold for his first European goal for Ajax: 1-0. How important to score early against a physically strong opponent known for its lethal counter-attacks. Club Brugge is an opponent from the Rosenborg and Grazer AK category, a category Ajax traditionally has problems with.

Sonck's goal forced the Belgians to attack and it must be said that they did this convincingly for some twenty minutes. Their best chance to equalize came only three minutes after the goal, as Petri Pasanen's erratic backpass put Sæternes face-to-face with Lobont. The Norwegian, however, wasted too much time walking around the diving Ajax goalie, so that Julien Escudé arrived on time to clear Sæternes' finishing attempt off the line.
Escudé was, no doubt, one of Ajax's best on the night: stylish and creative as the architect of Ajax's attacks, flawless in defense, accurate in his passing. The Frenchman was the main reason why Club Brugge hardly created any real danger after Sæternes' chance. A double Butina save was required five minutes before the half-time break, as Hatem Trabelsi's pass gave Wesley Sonck the space to release a furious shot. Butina couldn't hold on to it, so that the rebound was for Tom Soetaers. Butina saved again.
Soetaers, by the way, was probably Ajax's weakest link - alongside Rafaël van der Vaart, who missed Sunday's Willem II match due to an injury and had a disappointing comeback. Soetaers did not return for the second half. His replacement, Wesley Sneijder, had a fine second half and was in fact the man to send Sonck on his way to make it 2-0, a goal almost identical to the first one.
Club Brugge's resistance seemed instantly broken. In the remaining 35 minutes Sæternes claimed a penalty for a scrimmage with Escudé and Pasanen, but referee Barber was right in not giving it. When Philippe Clement saw his slamming 90th minute header punched out of the Ajax goal by Bogdan Lobont it was already to late.
In the latter 20 minutes in particular Ajax maintained possession in stylish and mature fashion. Big chances were not created, but it says a lot that a Belgian goal was never really in the air. This is a major difference with almost every game of last season's Champions League run: in all of those games there was a phase in which Ajax could have collapsed (although they usually didn't). This season's Ajax, however, calmly remained upright in the second half. As a result, Ajax vs Club Brugge was not Ajax's flashiest or best Champions League performance of the past two years, but arguably one of the most sovereign ones. Moreover: Ajax never won by a difference of two goals last in last season's Champions League.
"We were very effective", said Ronald Koeman after the game, "because we didn't get too many chances. It is often said that Dutch clubs can not play effectively, so I think the team realy deserves a compliment for the way it played in the second half."
Wesley Sonck, for one, was not very impressed with his countrymen. "Maybe they had two chances: a big one in the first half, after an error in our defense. Their chance in the second half was more like half a chance. (...) Brugge couldn't really become dangerous. As for us, I think we exploited our qualities well, especially in the second half."
Club Brugge's situation in Group H is not too hopeful: one point and two confrontations with AC Milan coming up. As for Ajax? In the words of Zlatan Ibrahimovic: "We're back in business." (MP)

Ajax's preparations for a league game were rarely disturbed as brutally as this Sunday morning, as arsonists set fire to the team bus, parked outside of the team's hotel near Groningen. The Amsterdammers considered going home, but ended up playing the away fixture at FC Groningen, after having been evacuated from the hotel for several hours during the night. The fierce and opportunistic hosts gave Ajax a hard time, but eventually the result was more than satisfying: 1-3. Coach Ronald Koeman: "The boys deserve a great compliment for the way they handled the situation and focused on the game."

Tall and taller: Zlatan Ibrahimovic battles with FC Groningen's Regillio Vrede. [Photo: ANP]
FC Groningen 1, Ajax 3. The result is the same as last season, but the game was very different: last season's dull edition of FC Groningen vs Ajax was a walk in the park for the Amsterdammers, who booked an unexpectedly easy victory. This year's game was entertaining, tense and passionate, thanks to the aggressive and determined hosts. The 'Pride of the North' was Ajax's equal on the pitch. Most of the open scoring chances were for Ajax, however, so that the Amsterdammers eventually deserved the win - although the final figures of 1-3 make the host look much weaker than they were.
Ajax had a tough time in the first half, in which the team (the same as against Club Brugge on Wednesday) showed fine combination play in midfield, but had no answer to Groningen's opportunistic kick 'n' rush play. The hosts were particularly threatening on corner kicks. Several of those were dangerously flicked on at the near post in the first half, forcing Bogdan Lobont to punch the ball over the cross-bar for yet another corner kick.
The most dangerous man on such occasions was Regillio Vrede, the enormous defender who came from Roda JC this summer. The entire Ajax defense was keeping an eye on him, as Rolf Landerl's 21st minute corner ended up at the far post, where it was a piece of cake for Arvid Smit to beat Bogdan Lobont: 1-0.
The opening goal was a well-deserved reward for Groningen's boldness, even though Ajax could not really be accused of any such thing as a weak start. The team's shifting to a higher gear had the desired effect only seven minutes after the opening goal. Ajax's equalizer was much discussed afterwards, because it started with a scuffle between Paul Matthijs and Rafaël van der Vaart on the middle line. Matthijs was pulling Van der Vaart's shirt, after which the Ajax captain wildly , thereby - according to the Groningen bench - hitting his opponent.
Seconds later Zlatan Ibrahimovic received the ball, created space for himself with a superb foot movement and mercilessly slammed home with his right: 1-1. A beautiful goal, which should not have been allowed according to the hosts. Ronald Koeman: "I don't agree. Matthijs was hanging around Van der Vaart's neck for at least 20 metres. Rafaël only liberated himself, although you never know how the fourth official will interpret it."
In spite of Groningen's determination and attractively aggressive play, by far the best chances in the remainder of the first half were for Ajax. Only one minute after Ibrahimovic's goal Rafaël van der Vaart had a free passage to Roy Beukenkamp, but saw the excellent Groningen goalkeeper save. two minutes before the break, Steven Pienaar nicely pulled back to an unmarked Wesley Sonck. Beukenkamp was out of position and the goal practically empty, but Sonck lifted the ball against the cross-bar.
The second half was equally passionate. The physically stronger home side reigned in the air and seemed to be more determined in man-to-man duels, but yet again the best chances were for Ajax: both Tom Soetaers (who had another weak game on the left flank) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic came face-to-face with Beukenkamp, but saw the Groningen goalie save. The hosts, meanwhile, came close to score as Glenn Salmon almost managed to fumble the ball past Lobont on a low Pinas cross.
As the minutes ticked away FC Groningen seemed to be headed for a point. It would have been fair, based on their over-all play. Yet, the risk that Ajax would create another major chance was tangible, especially after Nicolae Mitea, the young Romanian who scored three goals for Young Ajax last week, had replaced Tom Soetaers. Ajax's decisive attack was an Ibrahimovic-Sonck production of outstanding beauty: the Swede received the ball in the right part of the penalty box. He kept it under his boot, then passed to Sonck, who beuatifully turned away from his defender and fired it into the top left corner: 1-2.
FC Groningen's man for desparate last-gasp attacking is battering-ram and local hero Martin Drent, who was immediately brought on and actually came close to equalizing on a low Pinas cross. Lobont was alert on the goal-line. From the counter-attack, executed by Ajax with lightning speed, Hatem Trabelsi cut a low cross to the far post, where Nicolae Mitea was waiting to net his first goal for Ajax-1. The final score of 1-3 was far too flattering for Ajax, admittedly. However, enough chances were created to lay claim to the three points.
In front of the cameras of pay-TV channel Canal+ Zlatan Ibrahimovic, arguably the best Ajacied on the pitch, reflected on a strange and memorable day: "This is not normal. This doesn't normally happen, but it did happen to us. But the team handled it really well. I'm proud of all my guys. Even a fire can't stop us (...) We all worked really hard. I'm also very happy fpr Nicolae Mitea, who scored his first goal for Ajax."
Knowing that they had just lept back to the top of the Eredivisie table, it was time for the Ajacieden to take a shower, board the 'alternative' team bus borrowed from First Division side De Graafschap and take a well deserved nap on their way to Amsterdam... (MP)

Holland Casino Eredivisie
Amsterdam ArenA, Amsterdam
Friday, 17 November, 2003
Prior to the Eredivisie fixture between Ajax and FC Volendam the ArenA announcer welcomed the guests as "our friends from Volendam". The relationship between the clubs and their respective sets of fans is traditionally very friendly. Even the Volendam players were very polite in the ArenA, where Ajax got to prepare for its crucial Champions League fixture against Celta de Vigo in a pleasant, relaxed pace: 5-1.
'The Other Oranje', as FC Volendam is nicknamed, got promoted to the Eredivisie by winning the post-season play-offs in a rather fortunate way this year. The team is inexperienced and seems to be a bit too 'light' for the highest level. Volendam is hoping to gather just enough points to stay in. In the ArenA, however, the team did not seem to nurse any hopes of notching a point whatsoever, not even when they unexpectedly wiped out Wesley Sonck's early opening goal: a gracious, diagonal 5th minute header on a fine Soetaers cross from the left flank.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/volendam.jpg">

The crowd at the neary sold-out ArenA rubbed its hands after Sonck's excellent opening goal and prepared for a night of Ajax goals. To everyone's surprise, however, the score was level only eight minutes later, after collective negligence in the Ajax defense. It started with striker Dion Esajas, who got a free passage to Bogdan Lobont. The Ajax goalie saved, but saw Julien Escudé nonchalantly losing the ball to Jack Tuyp. His shot was once again saved by Lobont, but the Romanian was once again let down by Julien Escudé and Petri Pasanen, who apathetically watched how Esajas took care of the rebound: 1-1 (13').
"These things make me very angry", said Ronald Koeman after the game. "Moments like these determine whether you make it to the next round of the Champions League or not. Conceding a goal like that really hurts (...) Volendam gave the final push itself, but we gave them all the assistance they required."
Nevertheless, it never became a difficult evening for Ajax. FC Volendam, known as a well full of skilful, gracious football players, showed some good combination play in midfield, but their equalizer was the first and last time that they managed to properly launch one of their strikers. Ajax, meanwhile, played fairly well and required only a few accelerations to secure the win well before the half-time break.
The man to wrap it all up for Ajax was Rafaël van der Vaart. The Ajax captain had a difficult start of the season and did not score a single goal for Ajax so far. However, a few fine performances for Holland helped him in finding a way out of the crisis. Against Volendam he literally was a few inches away from netting a first half hattrick. He put Ajax in the lead by rocketing a diagonal shot past goalkeeper Van Westerop (32'), then took advantage of a poorly placed Volendam 'wall' on a free-kick (37') and almost added his third just before the break, but his beautifully curling long range attempt bounced over Volendam's goal via the cross-bar. "Finally it went in", said Van der Vaart. "I got rid of a lot of frustration today."
The second half was a formality, which is always pleasant for a team that has an important midweek fixture coming up. Ajax was freewheeling rather indifferently, but still managed to create one chance after the other. Wesley Sonck and Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed on several opportunities. The key difference between the two was their body language: Sonck was angry with himself after a missed chance, shaking his head and slamming his fist into his palm, whereas Zlatan seemed indifferent and aloof. The Swede tortured Van Westerop's fists with a few thundering shots, but was otherwise selfish in his actions and had one of his weaker games of recent weeks.
Ajax's best chance was missed by Hatem Trabelsi, who had a free passage, but showed that he's a defender by clumsily tapping the ball wide by a yard or two from close range. As for Volendam: the guests had only one dangerous moment after the break, as Maxwell had to clear a Luirink header (on a Jack Tuyp corner kick) off the goal-line.
The second half was slowly petering out and it seemed like the eagerly awaited return to Ajax-1 of young Johnny Heitinga was going to be the most memorable moment. Heitinga's return elicited the beautiful Amsterdam evergreen Oh Johnny from the F-Side stand. It's almost exactly a year ago (25 October) that the youngster sustained the second heavy injury of his tender career. Zdenek Grygera also returned from his injury and, finally, young Nicolae Mitea was granted his third first team appearance.
The Romanian dribbler almost immediately scored his second Eredivisie goal (in less than 45 minutes of Ajax-1 football in total). He rushed past two opponents and saw his shot carambole into the netting via Van Westerop's fingertips and the inside of the post. Mitea stormed all across the pitch to jump into the arms of coach Ruud Krol, who has served as the unofficial patron of the young Romanian during his first weeks with the first team.
Ajax would return to the dressing-rooms with a respectable final score in its pocket after all, as a fine Van der Vaart chip sent Wesley Sonck on his way. The Belgian striker controlled the ball beautifully, nicely slipped past the goalkeeper and then noticed that the onstorming Hatem Trabelsi was in a better position to score. The Tunisian calmly finished for his second ever Ajax goal: 5-1 (85').
After the game, quite typically, Volendam coach Henk Wisman seemed happier with the result than his Ajax colleague, Ronald Koeman. The latter was aware that Ajax played fairly well, but never needed to give everything against the charming, but hapless opposition from 'Eel Village'. This will be very different in the tremendously important ten days that lie ahead and will see matches against Celta de Vigo and PSV. (MP)

Defensive errors cost Ajax dearly in Vigo: 3-2

Champions League, Group Stage
BalaÃ*dos Stadium, Vigo, Spain
Tuesday, 04 November, 2003
Anything is still possible in Group H, one of the more exciting groups in this year's Champions League. The situation could have been very different, if the Ajax defense had not had one of its weakest nights of the season in Vigo's Balaidos Stadium, where hosts Celta left the pitch with three deserved points: 3-2.
It was a disappointing night for the Amsterdammers, for several reasons. For starters, Ajax seems to have wasted their best opportunity to notch a positive result away from home, given Celta's poor form in the Spanish Primera Division and their list of injured and suspended players, including Giovanella and Brazilian star Edu. This was the reason Ronald Koeman brazenly played an attacking 4-3-3 formation, including young Nicolae Mitea on the left flank. Secondly, Ajax did not only lose the three points, but also two players for the crucial home game against AC Milan, due to, respectively, accumulated yellow cards (Van der Vaart) and a double yellow on the night (Grygera). A better result was certainly possible. Ajax managed to score twice in a European away game, which is not bad at all. This game was lost because of several major defensive errors.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/ibrahimovic-100403-anp.jpg">
Zlatan Ibrahimovic laments a lost opportunity during 3-2 defeat at Celta de Vigo. [Photo: ANP]
Celta's win in front of 21,000 fans was most definitely a well-deserved one. The Spaniards dominated for more than an hour in total and brought the remarkably shaky Ajax defense into major trouble with almost every determined attack. Nevertheless, despite Celta's dominance in the opening moments, Ajax actually began well, controlling the game and seemingly ready to take over when French referee Eric Veissière rewarded a Savo Milosevic dive with a penalty. TV footage seemed to confirm that Abubakari Yakubu pulled his leg back and did not even make contact with the Celta striker. Rafaël van der Vaart was too energetic in his protestations to the referee, and was shown a yellow card that will rule him out for the home fixture against AC Milan on 26 November. Bogdan Lobont reacted well to Peter Luccin's penalty, but had no chance to save: 1-0 (25').
It must be said that Ajax had only one real chance in the first half, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw his left-footed shot go just wide. Otherwise, Luccin's opening goal abruptly ended what had been a short phase of good football for Ajax. The Amsterdammers lost their heads after the dubious penalty, started passing inaccurately and making mistakes in defense. Zdenek Grygera, for example, had a dreadful night against the superb Juanfran. The Czech was totally out of position when Sylvinho received the ball on the left flank and sent a perfect cross for Milosevic to slam his forehead against. Yakubu was out of position, while Julien Escudé allowed the tall striker to come in front of him far too easily: 2-0 (39').
Ajax's start of the second half was also worryingly poor. The Ajax defense was once again asleep as a Milosevic header bounced back from the post, far out Lobont's reach. An Ajax goal seemed lightyears away at this point, but nevertheless it was scored out of nowhere. Minutes after Mitea had provided Van der Vaart with a fine opportunity (the captain failed to tap home from close range), Maxwell released a fine cross to Wesley Sonck, who jumped well and diagonally headed home: 2-1 (53').
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/dejong-110403-ajaxnl-vdvuurst.jpg">

The new-born hopes visibly inspired the team and ushered in Ajax's best phase in the game. Abubakari Yakubu came closest to equalizing. His furious header hit the cross-bar via Pinto's fingertips. It seemed like Ajax was back into the game, but just like in the first half a short phase of Ajax pressure was painfully terminated by a goal on the 'wrong end' of the pitch. Maxwell was nowhere to be found, leaving Yakubu alone to confront two men. Vagner was the one to take him on, winning a brief duel and pushing the ball past Lobont in sovereign style: 3-1 (63').
Celta's third goal was the death-blow for Ajax. The Amsterdammers were outplayed during the remaining 30 minutes. Nevertheless, it was important for the team to keep hunting for a second goal, as a defeat by only one goal was enough for Ajax to stay ahead of Celta on head-to-head result, if both teams end with the same number of points. Ajax's important goal - once again - came out of nowhere and was scored by Rafaël van der Vaart, who nicely turned past his defender and fired home from some sixteen yards: 3-2.
Shortly thereafter, there was bad news from Bruges, where AC Milan's Kaka had just scored a late winner for the Italians. Ajax would have remained tops in case of a 0-0 draw in Bruges. More bad news: Zdenek Grygera received his second yellow card in the dying seconds of the game, after what was surely his weakest ever performance for Ajax. He will be automatically suspended for one game.
Several minutes later the calculating could commence. Ajax is still second, one point behind AC Milan, and can therefore call its position hopeful. Koeman stated this week that nine points would be sufficient to go through in this round. This is not completely true. If Ajax loses to Milan but beats Brugge, and if Celta wins their last two games, Ajax will end up third with nine points behind Celta (11 points) and Milan (10). And if Ajax beats Milan, Milan beats Celta and Brugge wins both games, Ajax will end up third with nine points behind Milan and Brugge (both 10 points). However, if Ajax beats Milan and Brugge doesn't beat Celta, Ajax will have already qualified one match before the end. And to carry on to the extreme... Ajax could even go through with eight points - if all teams draw their next two games.
While AC Milan's late goal Ajax cost Ajax its top slot in Group H, the Amsterdammers will now try to hold on to its other precious leading position: in the Eredivisie, starting on Sunday in The Hague. (MP)

Zuiderpark Stadium, The Hague
Sunday, 09 November, 2003
Almost exactly twelve years went by since Ajax last played in The Hague's Zuiderpark Stadium on 3 November 1991. The name of FC Den Haag since changed into ADO Den Haag, but some other things never change: Den Haag vs Ajax is a fixture that fills authorities and many others with fear since the horrendous escalations of 1 March 1987. Some 1,100 riot police were mobilized to escort 600 Ajax fans to a game that was only attended by 9,420 people. The atmosphere was grim and extremely hostile and The Hague hooligans attempted to storm the visitors section in the second half, but nevertheless a violent confrontation between the two sets of fans could be avoided. Meanwhile, a game of football was played, which Ajax won easily: 1-4.

ADO's first Eredivisie season since 1992 is not passing off too smoothly for the once great club from the Residence: Vitesse and FC Zwolle are the only Eredivisie teams with even fewer points than ADO. Ajax, meanwhile, wanted to wash away the bitter taste of its midweek stumble in Vigo. Coach Ronald Koeman changed his line-up in several places: Rafaël van der Vaart, still suspended for the league, was replaced by Wesley Sneijder, whereas Johnny Heitinga was paired with Julien Escudé in central defense. More than anything else, however, 9 November 2003 marked Jari Litmanen's first appearance in the Ajax starting line-up since 18 May of this year. The Finn, who had a fine game as a substitute against AZ, failed to make an impression in what was his 250th official appearance for Ajax - and was subbed on the hour.
It did not take long to figure out the qualities and weaknesses of ADO Den Haag. Their qualities: their determination and fighting-spirit, their ability to attack opportunistically and - last but not least - Romeo Castelen, an unstoppable, speedy dribbler upfront. Their major weakness and the key reason why the team is in the relegation zone: the defense. In no other game this season Ajax had as much space to play and were the gaps in the opponent's defense as enormous. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had two major scoring chances in the opening phase, in which goalkeeper Roland Jansen had to give away several corner kicks. Nicolae Mitea in particular was a plague for the green and yellow defense.
ADO left such enormous gaps and wasted so much energy in the opening phase that Ajax just had to score. There was never any doubt, not even when Maxwell allowed Ajax loanee Cedric van de Gun to pull the ball back into the penalty box from the right flank, where Johnny Heitinga and Tomás Galásek failed to clear and Roy Stroeve got the opportunity to fire home from close range: 1-0 (17').
ADO Den Haag managed to keep up with Ajax in this phase. The Amsterdammers, meanwhile, played fairly well and never came across as tired (after Tuesday battle in Vigo) or unwilling to fight. Heitinga, who did not look good when ADO scored, slowly became one of the better Ajacieden on the pitch. So did Wesley Sneijder, who was heavily criticized by Ronald Koeman for several poor performances in recent weeks, but now took Ajax by the hand in impressive style. Ajax's equalizer was a co-production of the two youngsters: a Sneijder corner kick, powerfully nodded against the nets by Heitinga for his first ever Ajax-1 goal (32').
There were no real scoring chances for either side in the remainder of the exciting first half, but Ajax corners and crosses caused chaos in Jansen's penalty area on several occasions. The most artistic moment followed in stoppage time, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic attempted to beat Jansen with a beautiful chip from long range, which Jansen had to push over the cross-bar. It was the last noteworthy moment of a first half ADO Den Haag could be satisfied about, but about which Ajax - meanwhile - did not have to worry.
Most of ADO's hopes for a good result evaporated only a minute after the break, as Ibrahimovic left ADO's defense flabbergasted with a stylish backward pass with his heel, which left Sneijder unmarked. The midfielder showed no mercy and fired home for his superb third goal of the season: 1-2 (47').
In the remainder of the second half the difference in quality was so enormous that it was almost impossible for Ajax not to score some extra goals. ADO coaches Israel and Schoenmaker, meanwhile, brought on their last joker: striker Peter Hofstede. Although it never seemed like ADO was going to return into the game, Hofstede did have his impact on the game, as he was the man to be pulled down by John Heitinga, who saw his second yellow card. Both yellow cards were easily given by referee Vink, but Ronald Koeman had no mercy with the youngster: "It was his own fault. He received his first yellow card for a foul after he'd clumsily lost the ball. And losing the ball also forced him to commit the second foul."
Going down to ten men, however, never brought Ajax into to trouble. In fact, before ADO even got the chance to take advantage of their majority in numbers Ajax's third goal was on the score-board. Zlatan Ibrahimovic managed to pull himself loose from Jeffrey van As (a product of the Ajax youth system) and volley a Wesley Sneijder free-kick against the nets: 1-3 (62'). It was the starting signal for the local hooligans to storm out of their section and attempt to pay a visit to the travelling Ajacieden. Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, was painfully hit by Van As when he scored - and limped off the pitch to be replaced by Petri Pasanen.
ADO Den Haag could have returned into the game in the 66th minute, as Zdenek Grygera had to clear a Peter Hofstede header off the goal-line and Bogdan Lobont had to save another Hofstede header from the subsequent corner-kick. Ajax, meanwhile, could have scored several more goals with ten men. Only one more was added: Victor Sikora, a 69th minute replacement for Mitea, was offered an easy finish by Wesley Sneijder. Three Dutchmen to score for Ajax in one game... it has become a rare thing. Another noteworthy fact: Wesley Sneijder scored one goal himself and gave the assist for the other three.
Ajax's win in The Hague came to stand much more easily than Stroeve's early goal, the half-time score and Heitinga's dismissal may suggest and consolidated the Amsterdammers' leading position in the Eredivisie, after RBC Roosendaal embarrassed PSV in Eindhoven on Saturday night (1-1). Ajax is now four points ahead of the defending Dutch champions, who were - good for Co Adriaanse! - leapfrogged by the Eredivisie 'surprise of the season': AZ.
With a two week break coming up (due to international games, including Holland's Euro 2004 play-offs against Scotland) Ajax can be very satisfied indeed. (MP)

Amsterdam ArenA, Amsterdam
Sunday, 23 November, 2003
The Eredivisie home game against SC Heerenveen marked the start of a thrilling and probably exhausting week for Ajax, in which (after Heerenveen) AC Milan and Feyenoord will visit a sold-out Amsterdam ArenA. Don't waste more energy than necessary, were Ronald Koeman's orders for the Heerenveen game. The players surely followed the coaches instructions, but against the hapless Frisians it was more than enough for an easy win: 3-1.
A fine result, given the fact that Ajax had to miss out on more than just a few players, due to suspensions (Van der Vaart, Heitinga) and injuries (Trabelsi, Pienaar, O'Brien). Availability against AC Milan will hardly be better, as Van der Vaart is also suspended for one European fixture, whereas the return of Johnny Heitinga is undone by the suspension of Zdenek Grygera. The line-up against Heerenveen made clear that Nigel de Jong is Koeman's preferred stand-in for Hatem Trabelsi, while Anthony Obodai surprisingly made his Ajax-1 début as a right midfielder. Another remarkable fact: for the moment young Nicolae Mitea appears to have leapfrogged Wamberto and Koeman's purchases Soetaers and Sikora in the hierarchy for the position of left winger.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/zlatan-112303-anp.jpg">

Perhaps the improvisations in the line-up were the reason why Ajax had a tough start against Heerenveen. The guests were well-organized and seemed to have come to the ArenA to give Ajax an extremely hard time. Ajax was unable to produce more than a harmless Ibrahimovic header in the first fifteen minutes, shortly after which Heerenveen took the lead from their first corner-kick of the game. Ironically the corner was taken by one former Ajax player (Richard Knopper) and slammed home with the head by another: Gerald Sibon, who scored only four Eredivisie goals in two seasons as an Ajax striker: 0-1 (18').
The start of a tough afternoon for Ajax? Quite mysteriously: not at all. Almost immediately after the opening goal the ArenA crowd saw the first symptoms of what coach Foppe de Haan refers to as the 'Heerenveen disease': a mysterious tendency to be overwhelmed by its own goals, to shrivel up offensively after having taken the lead and to display a mysterious fear of physical duels. SC Heerenveen is usually one of Holland's better sides, but somehow they are almost always an easy prey for Ajax in Amsterdam.
This season's edition was no exception. Hans Vonk managed to keep Ajax's first attempts (including a well-taken De Jong shot) out of his nets, but then had to bow his head twice in 90 seconds. Wesley Sonck, who did not score but played a very good game on the right flank, showed up in front of Vonk, was brought down by Edman, but referee Roelof Luinge noticed sharply that Wesley Sneijder was in the position to tap home for the equalizer: 1-1 (36').
Ajax won the game less than a minute later, as left winger Nicolae Mitea once again showed that coming to the far post at the right moment is one of his specialties: it was a piece of cake for the young Romanian to push Wesley Sonck's excellent, low cross into the nets: 2-1. Once again the attack was set up by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the last man to touch the ball before the scorer was Wesley Sonck. So much for Ajax's false start and Heerenveen's ambitions.
It's hard to believe that Ajax's second goal, scored well before half time, was decisive - but it was. Heerenveen's only chances in the remainder of the game were created when it was far too late for the guests to change their fate. A Sibon header and a fine shot by substitute Samaras in the dying minutes of the game were spectacularly saved by Bogdan Lobont, who had to show his qualities only because the concentration of his team-mates' had almost dropped to zero at that point.
Ajax was 3-1 up at that point. It could - and should - have been more. Zlatan Ibrahimovic calmly pushed home only eight minutes after the game, once again after great work by Wesley Sonck. The Swede was already celebrating his goal when he noticed that Luinge had disallowed the goal due to off-side - and he was right in doing so. It didn't matter for Zlatan, who nonchalantly fired his next chance past Vonk a few minutes later, this time on an assist by Anthony Obodai, who did fairly well in his first Ajax-1 game.
Despite playing in the lowest gear Ajax had chances to score some more. Ibrahimovic, however, preferred the artistic over the easy option a few times (and why not?), whereas Nigel de Jong and substitute Jari Litmanen saw Hans Vonk intercept well as they came face to face with him. It did not matter. Everyone, including the uninspired visitors, seemed at peace with the result.
The only worrying moments for Ajax in the second half were when Julien Escudé and Maxwell sustained unnecessary knocks and had to be treated. The Frenchman was alright, but the Brazilian's knee worried Ronald Koeman after the game. "It doesn't look good", the Ajax coach said. Maxwell will be Ajax's most important 'question mark' the next couple of days, during the preparations for Ajax vs AC Milan. A crucial game? Not if you look at the plain facts: a win can see Ajax through to the second round a game before the end. A defeat, however, can impossibly mean elimination. Which is the perfect starting point to receive the Italians with boldness - and to go for the win that Ajax would have deserved on several occasions in the past year. (MP)

AC Milan 'mission impossible' for depleted Ajax: 0-1

Champions League, Group Stage
Amsterdam Arena, Amsterdam
Wednesday, 26 November, 2003
Ajax's fourth Champions League clash with AC Milan in eight months' time did not bring Ajax the long awaited win. In fact, the stumble (0-1) was never as 'logical' and inevitable as it was this time. Quite bluntly, it was a 'mission impossible' for an injury-battered, depleted Ajax squad. They did what they possibly could, but the absence of Van der Vaart, Grygera (suspended), Pienaar, Trabelsi, O'Brien and Sonck (injured) was too much for the young Amsterdam outfit. As the only real striker left in the Ajax squad (Zlatan Ibrahmovic) limped off the pitch injured in the 40th minute - and the great Andriy Shevchenko gave the Italians the lead shortly after the break, it became clear that AC Milan was (yet again) too high a hurdle. Ajax worked with passion, but was unable to create a single real scoring chance against the rock-solid Italian defense. The almost inevitable outcome: Ajax 0, AC Milan 1.

Coach Ronald Koeman announced it the day before the game: given the number of suspended and injured players Ajax was - for once - going to adjust its tactics to the opponent and play in a more defensive formation. The result was a 5-3-2 line-up, in which Yakubu played alongside Escudé, with Johnny Heitinga as the extra man in front of them. In midfield Tomás Galásek was assisted by Anthony Obodai, who made his Champions League debut three days after his first Eredivisie appearance. Offensively, Ajax relied on the creativity of Wesley Sneijder and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - and the pace of young Nicolae Mitea. With an average age of 22 years and 131 days it was the youngest-but-one team to ever start a Champions League match.
The three Milan games played this year brought Ajax a 0-0 draw and defeats by the respective scores of 3-2 and 1-0. On all three occasions Ajax would have deserved more. This was not the case in fixture number four. In spite of the fact that Ajax had a lot of possession and applied pressure in the second half, AC Milan was constantly in control of the game. Ajax had a nervous start. The Italians could have taken the lead as early as in the 6th minute, as Filippo Inzaghi suddenly found himself totally unmarked on the edge of the penalty box. His shot was aimed far too high, so that it hardly felt like an enormous scoring chance. But it was. In fact, a better one than Ajax would get all night.
A win was never in it for the Amsterdammers, especially after the substitution of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the only real striker on the team and also the only tall, physically strong offensive player available to Koeman. The Swede has been suffering from a persistent groin injury for several months now and played numerous games on painkillers. The injury manifested itself at the most unfortunate moment, so that Ajax had to play the entire second half with a 'false' central forward (Jari Litmanen), assisted by three hard-working and fast, but also tiny and light-weight wingers (Mitea, later Sikora and Wamberto).
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/zlatan-112603-ajaxnl.jpg">

replaced before the half-time break. [Photo: Gerard van Hees/Ajax.nl]
Although it may have looked differently in the second half AC Milan was the better side throughout the game, in spite of the fact that their tactics were as negative and gray as always. The few tiny chances Milan created (such as a Pirlo thru-pass Inzaghi almost managed to push his toe against) were the most dangerous moments on the night.
Jari Litmanen, quite remarkably, had a dreadful game. He failed to choose position as a central forward and usually remained in midfield, which left Ajax's feather-light forward line (Wamberto and Sikora) all alone, amidst a multitude of physically superior defenders. Litmanen's passing was weaker than ever before: almost every pass was erratic. It explains why goalkeeper Dida only had to save one Ajax shot in 90 minutes: it came from the foot of Maxwell, in the 61st minute, as Milan had already taken a decisive lead. All other Ajax attempts, such as a Nigel de Jong header in the first half, went over the cross-bar.
AC Milan seemed to have come to Amsterdam for a point, but must have felt - just like the 50,000 spectators in the ArenA - that their chance to pocket the full three points was going to come. The inevitable happened seven minutes after the half-time break, as Cafu rushed forward over the left flank. His perfect cross was an inch too high for Abubakari Yakubu and landed perfectly on the chest of Andriy Shevchenko. The superb striker remained stone-cold in front of Bogdan Lobont: 0-1.
There was no other choice for Ajax than to attack. And so they did, passionately, but with too little force to worry the Milan defense, led in sovereign style by Paolo Maldini. The miracle Ajax was hoping for was never in sight, in spite of the fact that Nigel de Jong had a great game - and Anthony Obodai could be proud of his European debut. The Ghanese, by the way, sustained an injury early in the second half and had to be replaced. He will be out for an estimated two weeks - and will surely miss Sunday's clash with Feyenoord.
To make things even worse, bad news arrived from Vigo, where Celta had taken the lead against Club Brugge, the worst possible development for Ajax. A second announcement from Vigo, however, was the reason why Ajax - ultimately - could keep its head up high and remain optimistic. While the players were swapping shirts good tidings appeared on the score-board: Celta 1, Club Brugge 1. The Belgians equalized in stoppage time. Which means that Ajax will have everything in its own hand on 09 December in Bruges: a win will see the Amsterdammers through. If Celta doesn't win in Milan, even a draw will be enough.
"I want to compliment the team for keeping up with AC Milan for so long", said Koeman after the game. According to the Ajax coach the defeat was 'relatively easy to accept'. "Look at all the players we were missing. It was very hard for us. Of course we hoped that the ball would somehow fall into the right place for us. But that's not enough. Out of the four games we played against AC Milan this was the one in which we had the smallest chances (...) I can't blame anyone for anything tonight."
Just like everybody else at the ArenA, however, the Ajax coach remained optimistic. Koeman: "I am very happy with the result in Vigo. If Milan does its sportive duty and beats Vigo even a draw will see us through. I am disappointed with the result, but yet very happy that we still have everything in our own hands."
Meanwhile, the countdown to another top fixture has begun. Three days to prepare for the first 'Classic' of the season, in yet another sold-out Amsterdam ArenA. Van der Vaart and Grygera will most certainly be back for that game. Zlatan and Sonck are expected to make it also. Which is good news, as it is about time for Ajax to beat the arch-enemy in Amsterdam. Visits to Rotterdam have been succesful in recent years, but the last win in the Dutch capital was booked a remarkably long time ago: on 2 May 1999. (MP)

Van der Vaart 'shock start' good for win in 150th Classic

"I think you score such a goal only once in your life," said Rafaël van der Vaart after the 150th Classic against Feyenoord (2-0). The Ajax captain, who returned from suspension and started as a central forward, referred to the already legendary backward touch with his heel, with which he flicked the ball over his own back and into the net, leaving Feyenoord's defence stunned and setting the atmospheric ArenA on fire as early as in the 4th minute.
"The ball came slightly behind me, so I decided to do it with my heel. I knew I had to hit it exactly right, but I never expected it to go in like this," said Van der Vaart, who - quite remarkably - never played a Classic at the ArenA before. Wesley Sneijder on his buddy's goal: "I thought the ball was going to Sonck. Then it went in and I didn't believe what I was seeing."
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/vandervaart-113003-ajaxnl.jpg">

Ajax had a 'shock start' against its Rotterdam arch-enemy, who - just like Ajax - had to put up with a disappointing European result (Feyenoord was eliminated by FK Teplice in the UEFA Cup). Only seven minutes after the opening goal, the score that would turn out to be the full-time result was on the board, as a smooth Mitea pass landed exactly in between goalkeeper Patrick Lodewijks and defender Kees van Wonderen, who blundered in an almost comical way, allowing the onrushing Van der Vaart to tap home: 2-0 (11').
Ajax was 2-0 up in no time and it turned out to be enough for the win, although Ajax most definitely did not play a great game. In fact: after having scored two goals out of half a chance, Ajax failed to create another good chance in the first half. Feyenoord recovered remarkably quickly from the early 'near-knockout' and actually was the better side in the first half. The Ajax midfield, in particular, had problems with Feyenoord's combination play through the middle, in which Shinji Ono and Thomas Buffel were the two most important factors.
In did not lead to large numbers of scoring chances for the guests, but there were several dangerous moments indeed, on which Ajax managed to intercept just before a serious chance came to stand. Julien Escudé and Johnny Heitinga, luckily, each played a fine game and nipped several Rotterdam attempts (Kuyt, Lurling) in the bud, so that Bogdan Lobont only had to act on a fairly harmless Thomas Buffel shot. But Feyenoord came close - and not just once.
Feyenoord's weaknesses were the lack of accuracy of the final pass and - more than anything else - their forward line, where former FC Utrecht striker Dirk Kuyt had his back toward Lobont's goal for almost 90 minutes and never got to play the game he's good at (creating unrest in the penalty-box). The danger came from Feyenoord's midfield, right through the middle, where Shinji Ono played well. It was a major setback for Feyenoord when 'friendly fire' by Robin van Persie hit the Japanese superstar right on the liver. He collapsed, had to be stretchered off unconscious and was replaced by Song in the 35th minute. The Korean was one of Feyenoord's weakest in the remaining 55 minutes.
It must be said, by the way, that if one side had reason to use player availability as an excuse for its play, it was Ajax. Van der Vaart and Heitinga returned from suspensions, but Ajax still had to miss out on key players such as Pienaar and Trabelsi, while strikers Ibrahimovic and Sonck were available, but not fully recovered and unable to play a whole game. The fittest, surprisingly, was Sonck. Ibrahimovic started on the bench. He replaced his hard-working but struggling Flemish colleague in the second half.
<img src="http://www.ajax-usa.com/matches/m03-04/assets/paauwe-113003-anp.jpg">

Sonck run to congratulate Rafael van der Vaart. [Photo: ANP]
Although Ajax's play improved slightly after the break, it was never great. But there sure was a difference: for starters, defense and midfield seemed better organized. Secondly, Ajax had a hatful of open chances to seriously hurt Feyenoord in the second half. But football can be a strange game: two goals from half a chance in the first half, zero goals from at least half a dozen chances in the second. Van der Vaart pushed a Mitea cross inches wide in the 48th minute and Patrick Lodewijks saved two of his shots and one close-range header. The arrival of Ibrahimovic almost immediately had two moments of 'Zlatan magic' as a result. But Lodewijks (who admitted that the 2-0 was his fault) had a good second half - and protected his team from losing by large figures. The numerous opportunities to make it 3-0 made Ajax's win, ultimately, a well-deserved one. And it was about time, too: Ajax hadn't beaten Feyenoord in Amsterdam since May 1999. Their last four visits to the ArenA brought Feyenoord three draws and a win.
Some more trivia? It was Ajax's 50th league victory under coach Ronald Koeman. Meanwhile, Wesley Sonck played his 200th game as a professional footballer. More importantly, Ajax is now four points ahead of PSV and no less than ten points clear of Feyenoord, who are 4th behind AZ. Meanwhile, the Amsterdammers have qualification for the knock-out stages of the Champions League in their own hands, which justifies the conclusion that Ajax is having a very satisfying first season-half. In order to enter the winter-break satisfied, however, the Amsterdammers will have to keep it up for a few more weeks, starting with a fixture Ajax hasn't won in an even longer time: Roda JC away. The last time Ajax won in Kerkrade was in August 1998. (MP)

Champions League, Group Stage
Jan Breydel Stadium, Brugge, Belgium
Tuesday, 09 December, 2003
There were reasons for Ajax to enter Brugge's atmospheric Jan Breydel Stadium with optimism and self-confidence: the Amsterdammers were the #2 in Group H after five matches and had their fate entirely in their own hands. A win over Club Brugge -- reigning Belgian champions, but currently 5th in the First Class and sixteen points behind rivals Anderlecht -- would see Ajax through. However, the Ajax 'Class of 2003-2004' failed miserably for its final and ultimate test: 2-1. Meanwhile, as expected, group winners AC Milan allowed Celta de Vigo to notch the full three points from San Siro, so that the great loser of Matchday 6 was Ajax. Not only a Champions League slot went up in smoke, even an admission ticket to the
