Braves' J. Franco Breaks Finger
ATLANTA -- Braves first baseman Julio Franco was put on the 15-day disabled list after breaking a finger in a freak accident.
Franco, who is batting .297 with three homers and 27 RBI in a part-time role, was talking with a teammate in the weight room when an 80-pound dumbbell rolled over the middle finger on his left hand.
He was taken to Piedmont Hospital, where X-rays confirmed the fracture. He also needed four stitches to close a cut, which will keep him out a week to 10 days.
Franco is one of the oldest players in the majors. He is believed to be turning 45 on Saturday, though the Braves media guide says he will be 42.
To replace him on the roster, the Braves called up Mike Hessman from Triple-A Richmond, where he was batting .250 with 16 homers and 52 RBI. He can play first, third and the outfield.
