Jae Weong Seo appears to have outlasted the bad stretch in which he found himself for much of the summer.
The South Korean rookie struggled though July and into early August, not nearly resembling the pitcher who was so dominating through May and June. But over his last three starts, Seo has pitched well, winning two consecutive games. His ERA over that stretch is 3.17.
Whether he has returned to form enough to topple the Braves remains to be seen. Seo has faced Atlanta four times already this season and hasn't looked sharp the two times he's faced them. The Braves seem to have figured out Seo's off-speed stuff so he'll have to rely on a little more guile and hope his fastball can come close to the low 90s range.
Pitching matchup:
ATL: RHP Shane Reynolds
10-6, 5.18 in 2003
1-0, 3.00 vs. NYM in 2003
5-5, 3.77 lifetime vs. NYM
NYM: RHP Jae Weong Seo
7-8, 4.20 in 2003
1-2, 4.68 vs. ATL in 2003
1-2, 4.68 lifetime vs. ATL
Players to watch: Mike Piazza is hitting .469 (15-for-34) with three homers in his career against Reynolds. ... Roger CedeƱo is hitting .400 (4-for-10) while Joe McEwing is hitting .538 (7-for-13).
Quotable: "He has shown, at times, a new way of playing first base." -- Mets manager Art Howe on Jason Phillips' unorthodox style at first.
Quick hits: Piazza is two RBIs shy from becoming the eighth player, whose primary position is catcher, to reach 1,100 RBIs. Yogi Berra is tops with 1,430. ... Ty Wigginton is 20 hits shy of equaling Ron Hunt's club rookie record of 145 set in 1963.
