Everett Placed on Disabled List
BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Carl Everett on the 15-day disabled list Thursday after a swollen right knee he injured last week failed to improve.
The center fielder hasn't played since he hurt the knee June 21 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays diving for a double by John Flaherty.
Boston's move was retroactive to June 22. He's eligible to come off the list July 7 during a weekend series against Atlanta, just before the All-Star break.
Manager Jimy Williams said he made the decision to move Everett to the DL after watching Everett jog this week.
Everett had been doing light exercises and jogging in hopes the swelling would do down on its own. Everett doesn't take anti-inflammatories because he's allergic to aspirin. An MRI exam last week showed no serious damage to the knee.
Everett is hitting .284 with 9 home runs and 42 RBI.
The move comes the day after Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez was placed on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder.
The Red Sox called up reliever Bill Pulsipher from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Everett. Williams said he wanted another lefty in the bullpen as the team prepares for upcoming series with Toronto and Cleveland, teams with good left-handed hitters.
