Elbowed out
The Royals placed right-handers Runelvys Hernandez and Kevin Appier on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 26, both with elbow injuries. Hernandez, the team's opening-day starter, is out for the season and will need "Tommy John" surgery to replace a torn ligament. The Royals do not expect him back before the middle of next season, manager Tony Pena said. The Royals still do not know whether Appier will need surgery to repair a tear in his flexor tendon, general manager Allard Baird said.
