CYCLONES SWEEP DOUBLE DIP
Brooklyn took both ends of a doubleheader from the Vermont Expos by scores of 3-0 and 6-4. The two wins coupled with a Williamsport Crosscutters loss puts the Cyclones only half a game out of first place with four to go.
In the first game, Cyclones' starter Evan Maclane, who was making his Brooklyn debut, pitched six masterful innings, allowing only three hits while striking out five to pick up his first win. The 'Clones only runs were scored in the fourth inning when Ian Bladergroen blasted his sixth home run of the year, to drive in Rashad Parker and Jon Slack and make the score 3-0.
In the second game, Brooklyn jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Aaron Baldiris worked a walk, and was followed up by an Andy Wilson single to put runners on the corners with one away. Tony Piazza laced a single into left field to drive Baldiris home. Wilson later scored on an error by Expos' second baseman Oscar Bernazard to make the score 2-0.
Vermont cut the lead in half with a run in the third frame, but Brooklyn roared back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Baldiris, who was 4-5 in the two games, and Tyler Davidson started the rally with back to back singles and both runners scored when Andy Wilson laced a double over the centerfielder's head. Wilson later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.
The Expos scored twice in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one, but Brooklyn again answered with a run in the sixth on a Humberto Gonzalez RBI single to make the score 6-4. Reliever Javier Ochoa (3-0) picked up the win for Brooklyn while Robert Paulk struck out the side in the seventh for his league leading 14th save of the year.
The Cyclones take on the Expos in the finale of this three game series tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. Tanner Osberg (0-3) will make the start for Brooklyn in their last regular season game of the season at KeySpan Park.
