I got that directly from ESPN. Sorry, but that line strikes me as odd (quotation marks mine).

Anyway, here's the article: http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2001/1221/1299914.html Friday, December 21, 2001
Yankees say Posada will be ready for Opening Day

NEW YORK -- Jorge Posada felt discomfort in his shoulder, so the Yankees ordered a series of tests. On Friday, they admitted their catcher had arthroscopic shoulder surgery several weeks ago.

"He had a small labrum tear," manager Joe Torre said. "He's going to be ready by Opening Day, no question."

New York wanted to keep the operation secret until it signed another backup catcher. General manager Brian Cashman announced a one-year deal Friday with Alberto Castillo, who will compete with Todd Greene during spring training.

Castillo gets a $650,000, one-year contract ($300,000 if he's in the minor leagues). The Yankees also agreed to a minor league contract with utilityman F.P. Santangelo, who would get a $350,000 contract if he makes the major league roster.

In addition, Cashman said David Wells worked out for the Yankees on Thursday in Tampa, Fla. The left-hander's agent, Gregg Clifton, said Thursday a deal between his client and Arizona was 85 percent complete.

Cashman said Wells told the Yankees on Thursday he had not yet made a decision.

Torre, getting ready for a monthlong vacation in Maui, Hawaii, said Nick Johnson would definitely make the team coming out of spring training, and the rookie probably would see a lot of time at designated hitter.

Johnson also will occasionally spell Jason Giambi, the Yankees' biggest offseason acquisition, at first base. During spring training, Johnson will also get some time in the outfield.

"I'll turn him over to Maz," Torre said, referring to coach Lee Mazzilli, who oversaw Chuck Knoblauch's move from second base to left field last year.

Cashman said the Yankees' medical staff ordered an MRI exam on Posada's right shoulder after the World Series loss to Arizona, and the test was negative. About a week later, Posada had another test, this time with dye injected into the shoulder, and that exam revealed the tear.

"He had a full range of motion within three days," Cashman said.

Torre spoke Thursday with Posada, who was getting treatment at the Yankees' facility in Tampa. The Yankees debated whether Posada should avoid the surgery and play with the tear.

"It was the question more so in his mind than the physical discomfort," Torre said. "He's going through the physical rehab with no discomfort."

In other Yankees news, Giambi, introducing himself to Yankee employees, went down to the ticket office recently and fielded a call from a person inquiring about season tickets. The caller didn't believe he was talking to Giambi. ... The Yankees released their schedule Friday. They open April 1 at Baltimore and play their home opener April 5 against Tampa Bay. The Mets are at Yankee Stadium from June 28-30. Single-game tickets go on sale Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, on the Internet and through TicketMaster. ... Hall of Famer Yogi Berra will spend all of spring training with the Yankees as a catching instructor. It seems to me that George really does have an obsession with ex-Mets. Todd Pratt had been offered the opportunity to compete with Todd Greene, but he's going back to the Phillies (thank you GOD!). So what does George do next? Signs former Met Alberto Castillo. True, he won't get the thrill of signing a fan favorite the way he would if he had signed Tank, but the principle is the same. The only good Mets are ex-Mets. :hmm:
