Notes: Phils trade for Stinnett
By Ken Mandel / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- The Phillies added catching depth by acquiring veteran catcher Kelly Stinnett and cash from the Reds for a player to be named later.
Stinnett, 33, was hitting .229 with three home runs and 19 RBIs in 60 games with Cincinnati this season. He is a .235 career hitter with 54 homers.
Stinnett will join the team on Monday. To make room for Stinnett, the Phillies optioned right-hander Brandon Duckworth to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Duckworth will return to the club on Tuesday.
Making the move by Sunday's midnight deadline allows Stinnett to be eligible for the Phillies' postseason roster. Should the Phillies make the postseason, they will likely carry 11 pitchers.
"We felt adding an experienced backup catcher for protection if we have a breakdown for Lieby or Pratt and it gives (Phillies manager Larry Bowa) Bo the opportunity to use Pratt as a bat off the bench. Kelly brings some good qualities to the club himself. He's a good established backup catcher with big-league experience."
Stinnett and the Phillies hold a mutual option for next season. The right-hander has played with the Mets, Brewers and Diamondbacks.
Callups: The Phillies announced that pitchers Ryan Madson, Josh Hancock and third baseman Travis Chapman will join the Phillies from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, when rosters expand.
The Red Barons, already eliminated from the playoffs, play their final game on Monday. The Phillies were thought to be considering adding a third catcher, though that isn't necessary now that the team traded for Stinnett.
Chapman was selected in the Rule 5 Draft by Cleveland, then traded to Detroit and eventually offered back to Philadelphia at the end of Spring Training. He hit .274 with 12 homers and 82 RBIs in 474 at-bats with Scranton.
Madson was a 2002 Paul Owens Award winner. The award is given to the organization's top pitching and hitting prospect. Chase Utley was the hitter. Madson went 12-8 with a 3.50 ERA, but struggled in the season's final month. Hancock, acquired in an offseason trade with Boston, went 10-9 with a 3.86 ERA.
Shock the monkey: Earlier Saturday afternoon, This Week in Baseball host Randy Wolf guided a national audience through his typical game-day routine, complete with vegging on the couch -- surrounded by candles -- for an hour plus, listening to music, and eating a sensible meal before driving alone to the ballpark.
Pretty ordinary, except for the part where he rubs a rally monkey thrice for luck.
"It's always good to rub the monkey before you pitch," said Wolf.
"He has his routine and I have mine," said catcher Mike Lieberthal, refusing to comment further.
Philling in: Placido Polanco sat out Sunday's game with a sore left quadriceps muscle. He said he's felt sore since getting hit with a pitch last month in Florida, and felt it more playing on the hard turf in Montreal's Olympic Stadium. ... Bowa said he is leaning against going with a four-man rotation for the stretch run, though he has a schedule set, should he change his mind. The Phillies have two off days, which could allow for the fifth spot to be skipped.
This day at the Vet: 1977 -- Steve Carlton wins his 15th straight game at the Vet, beating the Braves. It was his 19th win overall in a season in which he went 23-10 and won his second of four Cy Young Awards.
