NEW YORK (AP) -- Jorge Velandia hit a two-run triple and an RBI double a day after being called up from the minors, and the New York Mets beat Atlanta 9-3 Wednesday to complete their complete their first sweep of the Braves since 1990.

Roger Cedeno broke an 0-for-18 slump with two hits and also drove in a run and Steve Trachsel (14-8) pitched eight strong innings and added an RBI single in a steady drizzle.

The last-place Mets swept the first-place Braves for the first time since taking two in a row on April 24-25, 1990, at Shea Stadium. New York outscored the Braves 15-6 in sweeping a series of at least three games against Atlanta for the first time since winning four straight at home from July 20-23, 1989.

The Braves have dominated the Mets in recent years, going 62-35 from the beginning of 1998 until this week's series, including a six-game win in the 1999 NL championship series.

Atlanta made too many mistakes to win this one -- the Braves tied a season high with four errors, and three of New York's runs were unearned.

Timo Perez hit a solo home run, his fourth of the year and first since Aug. 7 at Houston. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Velandia, playing in place of injured Jose Reyes, hit his first major league triple in the second, when the Mets scored three runs off Russ Ortiz (18-6), who was trying for a major league-high 19th victory.

Ty Wigginton got aboard on a fielding error by third baseman Vinny Castilla, Raul Gonzalez walked and both advanced on Ortiz's wild pitch before Velandia tripled to the wall in right-center. Center fielder Andruw Jones dived, but the ball got past him.

Cedeno led off the first inning with a single that landed in shallow left field, and he got to second when Chipper Jones struggled to pick up the ball in the soggy field for an error.

Jones made up for it a few minutes later, hitting a solo homer to right-center for Atlanta's lone run. Jones has nine hits in 45 career at-bats against Trachsel, but five of them have been homers.

After allowing a single to Ortiz in the third, Trachsel retired 10 straight Braves hitters. The right-hander gave up five hits, struck out five and did not have a walk.

Ortiz allowed six runs and six hits in five innings, striking out three and walking two.

Castilla left during his fifth-inning at-bat after fouling a ball off his left knee.

Javy Lopez hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Orber Moreno, making his first major league appearance since June 9, 1999, for Kansas City against St. Louis. He was on the DL the following year after reconstructive elbow surgery, pitched in 30 minor league games in 2001, then pitched in only two minor league games last year, his season cut short by a torn labrum that needed an operationto repair.

Notes

At one point, the Braves' totals on the main scoreboard read 1-2-3 -- one run, two hits, three errors. ... Velandia set a career high in RBIs with three. He'd driven in one run four times. He spent parts of three seasons with Oakland when Mets manager Art Howe was managing the Athletics. ... Ortiz is 2-2 vs. Mets this season and 4-2 at Shea Stadium. ... New York C Vance Wilson played for the first time since Aug. 22. Manager Art Howe gave starting catcher Mike Piazza the day off after a night game Tuesday. ... The Mets have won 14 of their last 21 games, with their starting pitchers going 13-5. ... Jeff Duncan's RBI single in the eighth for New York snapped an 0-for-31 slump. ... The Mets' Danny Garcia got his first major league RBI with a sacrifice fly in theeighth.

I guess there has to be some highlight in this lack luster season the Mets have played. And trailor trash? Since when have the Braves been trailor trash (well...after rocker that is)? They've always been classy, have always treated the fans with respect, as well as other ball clubs. I know it's quite an accomplishment to beat the best team in baseball right now, but remember, they're resting up the club for the playoffs. You beat a bunch of second stringers. No big feat in itself. But at least the Bravos will be playing ball in October, instead of golf.

....You beat a bunch of second stringers.....

Yeah. They were named Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Gary Sheffield, Rafael Furcal, Vinny Castilla, Marcus Jiles, Javey Lopez, Greg Maddux, Mike Hampton and Russ Ortiz. These are the "second stringers" that the Mets faced in their three games against Atlanta. :hmm:

let's add Derosa, Bong, Hessman, Langerhans, Estrada, Garcia, Bragg, Cunnane, Hodges and Wright to that list, shall we?

Ohhhhhhhh Please!!

Give me a FREAKIN break!!

Both Jones', Sheffield and Javy played all 3 games in this series and Giles played in 2 of the 3.....

Get your facts straight before you start talking crap and downgrading their sweep (2nd stringers):hmm:

We beat 18 game winner Ortiz by scoring 6 runs off of him, beat a hot Hampton and won with Maddux starting a game....

Arguably their best 3 pitchers.....

Yeah, they will be playing into October only to choke again in the playoffs or WS...

As far as the Trailer Park Trash comment, that wasn't made by a Mets fan so I'll let him defend himself if he wishes to....

This is why it is so easy to dislike the Braves because their fans talk so much crap and are so cocky, they cant even give a fan from another team the satisfaction of a sweep without trying to make excuses....

Last time I checked, the Braves have only 1 championship since being in Atlanta and only 2 if you count their time in Milwaukee which is the same # of championships the Mets have and they started in Milwaukee about 9 years before the Mets were even around....

Oh FOM please don't even try!! this has been the high point of the Mets season!!

Second stringers my butt! I do believe that Jones, sheff and LAAAArry played in all games!

If anyone should be embarrassed you know it's the braves, they were the ones beat by the rookies!

as for class, I do believe that Rocker wasn't the only Coward shooting of his mouth back then! Larry made some stupid remarks towards the Mets, there Fans and the City itself not to shortly after 9/11!!

anyway I wasn't going to let you come in here and try to rain on Met fans little ounce of pride for the 03 season!!!:eviltongu

Please, you had your best players in the game most of the series...

Derosa only played 1 game while Viny played the other 2...

We didnt have Piazza playing in one of the games either not did we have one of our best players in Cliff Floyd play at all in this series....

If you can't win with what you had out there (all your allstars were there) then you guys will be exiting the playoffs earlier than I expected...

I've been here for a month now, and this is the first time I've said anything about the Braves. I backed my argument up with a list of names that I just posted, 1/2 of whom I've never even heard of, and the rest have barely played the season. And again, I hear it from Mets fans all the time, but the one time I say anything against the Mets, I have the entire forum against me. A little lopsided if you ask me. And do you really think if the Braves were in the middle of a pennant race you would have even won 2 games? And even if the Braves lose in October (which I highly doubt) at least they got to play.

And in my defense, this is the first time I've talked crap to anyone, anywhere on this forum. And I get jumped on. So maybe I'll keep my mouth shut...till October

Thats because you come into the Mets forum and try to rain on our parade...

You dont see the Mets fans going into the Braves forum and talking any kind of crap at all do you??

Did you happen to see any of the players from the Mets??

Not only did we not have 3/4 of our original team from the beginning of the season we also had our Sept callups play most of the series..

Ever hear of guys like Scutaro, Wheeler, Duncan, Garcia, Redman and Velandia???

Those are all Met players that played in this series...

Velandia-2 games
Garcia-3 games
Duncan-45 games
Scutaro-34 games
Redman-4 games

In the cases of Redman and Garcia, those were the first 3 and 4 games of their major league careers...

Duncan, Redman, Raul Gonzalez, Jason Phillips, Ty Wigginton, Garcia, Duncan, Scutaro, all who played most of this series are all rookies....

First of all.....what James said.

And also, you're in a Forum of a team where we, as fans, have hit ultimate lows this season..... seeing injuries, poor play, etc........ when we came into the season expecting wonderful things. And we're still looking for a silver-lining in a crappy season..... cheering on the new guys, finding things to be positive about.

Really nice to come in here and poop on us. It just isn't a very nice thing to do, yeah? So you're gonna hear it from the fans. And we're gonna label you "typical Braves fan". Like James said..... no one went into the Braves Forum and talked trash about the games.

James, you forgot that, while the Braves were in Milwaukee a mere 9 years before the Mets were in existence, they were in Boston for a whole lotta years before that. 76, to be exact. Cowards' fans seem to want to forget their pre-Ratlanta history, but I didn't.

So, for the uninitiated (that includes you, Frags), here is a brief history of the Braves:

*Atlanta Braves (1966 - 2002) - 1 World Championship, 5 Pennants, and 13 Playoff Appearances
*Milwaukee Braves (1953 - 1965) - 1 World Championship, 2 Pennants, and 2 Playoff Appearances
*Boston Braves (1911 - 1935, 1941 - 1952) - 1 World Championship, 2 Pennants, and 2 Playoff Appearances
*Boston Bees (1936 - 1940)
*Boston Rustlers (1909, 1910)
*Boston Doves (1907, 1908)
*Boston Beaneaters (1883 - 1906) - 1 World Championship, 6 Pennants, and 1 Playoff Appearance
*Boston Red Caps (1876 - 1882) - 2 Pennants and 0 Playoff Appearance

So, why don't we all become as shallow as a Jeter-era Skank fan and talk about how many championships a franchise has in how many years of existence.

The Braves, as is seen above, have been in existence (in various incarnations) since 1876. That is a total of 127 years. In that time, they have brought home a grand total of 4 World Championships. That's 1 WS trophy every 31.75 years.

The Mets, on the other hand, have been in existence for 41 years, and have won 2 WS championships, or 1 every 20.5 years.

Once every 31.75 years vs once every 20.5 years. Which team has done better? The Mets, that's who. And, let's not forget that both of the Mets' 2 WS trophies were won before the Braves even won a playoff game for the city of Atlanta (we swept you in 1969, remember?)

In addition, the Mets have had better success (on a percentage basis) in the post-season than the Braves have. The Mets have been in the post-season 6 times in their history; they got to the WS 4 of those times, and they won 2 of those WS. As a result, they got to the WS 67% of the time they made the post-season and won the WS 50% of the time they were in it. The Braves lost in the WS to the Skanks twice in 4 seasons. How proud Frags must be. :hmm:

That's vastly better than the Braves' record of choking in the first round. For the record, the Mets have only lost in the first round once, and that was to the Dodgers in 1988.

Frags, don't mess with Mets fans. We actually know our stuff. :no

I never said you didn't, and I don't you like you thinking me ignorant of the Brave's Pre-Atlanta years, I know all about them. I may be young, but I know my baseball. Baseless accounts of my lack of knowledge does not sit well. If you can't handle a little trash talking, that's okay, I won't come back. I understand I was in the wrong, but please don't insult my inteligence, especially when you know nothing about me. I never insulted any of you, and I expect the same.

Nothing wrong with a little trash talking but you are coming in here to trash talk after your team got swept:umm and trying to make excuses on why.....

Can't blame us for trying to defend our team....

You would do the same....

Also, Jules, I didnt forget about their days in Boston, just tried to get a close time frame between the 2 teams.....:D

Great research Jules...Nice job:thumbsup:

Those early Boston teams had some great players like HOF'ers Dan Brouthers, Jim O'Rourke, Hugh Duffy, as well as one of the greatest pitchers of alltime in Kid Nichols...
They also had a guy by the name of Tommy Bond whom IMO is a borderline HOF'er....

Oops, sorry, got sidetracked with history talk...

Sorry:angel:

Man, maybe that Mercury-Retrograde thingy is still going on, but that is a pretty lame series of excuses, Fraggy ... They got beat, pretty plain and simple, let the Mets celebrate or be prepared to take your lumps when you come into their Forum downplaying it.

When I said that people seem to forget the Boston days, I am speaking primarily of the team itself. I remember hearing some announcers saying that, while the organization does have reminders of the Milwaukee days around, they don't really pay much attention to the Boston era.

And then, of course, there are their devoted fans. The fans who love the Braves so much that they come to playoff games disguised as empty seats.

Please. :hmm:

Good point about the devotion of fans during playoff time Jules....

They are spoiled and it will come back to haunt them when their cycle will come and they will be in the cellar....

It happens to every team....They should appreciate what they have now and continue to supprt a winer as they never know when they wont have a winning team in Atlanta..

Also, its a shame a lot don't even associate those early Boston team as before the run they are on now the Boston Beaneaters were very successful winning 1 World Championship, 6 Pennants, with a Playoff Appearance.....
