ATLANTA -- Former Atlanta Braves closer John Rocker expects to be throwing off a pitching mound again early next year after surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.

Rocker was released June 27 by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, his third team since the Braves traded him in 2001.

"I've just been beating my head against a wall, last year and this year, why I wasn't throwing well, and why I couldn't snap a good breaking ball or throw a good fastball," the 28-year-old left-hander told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

With the Braves, Rocker threw 94-96 mph and sometimes reached 98 mph. He had 83 saves and a 2.63 ERA. With Cleveland, Texas and Tampa Bay, he had an ERA of 6.00 with five saves and a fastball topping out in the low 90s. He had a 9.15 ERA in 17 appearances with Class AA Orlando when Tampa Bay released him.

Rocker became the center of controversy in 1999 when he made derogatory comments in Sports Illustrated about gays and minorities.

Dr. James Andrews, an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, Ala., performed the operation July 15. Typically, rotator cuff surgery requires 12 to 18 months of recuperation, and it sometimes ends careers.

Rocker, who still lives in Atlanta, told the newspaper he hopes to be playing catch in November.

"I don't have any doubt I can come back," he said.

He said every time Andrews sees him, "he moves my shoulder around and says, `You're going to be throwing 95 before you know it.'"

Did the doctor insert some personality and sensitivity??

It’s time for me to come out with it…I’m a closet John Rocker fan. Maybe it’s because I like rooting for the underdog, or maybe its because I don’t think that someone should be punished by baseball for saying what he believes, even if it is moronic. This is America and not the Soviet Union. Regardless, John Rocker was punished and has never been the same since.

I thought that he might do well with the Indians when they picked him up in June of 2001. You know the adage about what a nice change of scenery can do for a ball player. He didn’t. I then thought that he might just need some more time and that following GM John Hart to a job with the Rangers might do the trick. That didn’t work either. This past April he signed with the Devil Rays in what was probably his court of last resort. It really didn’t go well. With his release on June 27th the writing is on the wall.

I guess I need to admit it, and maybe John does too. John Rocker needs to hang up the spikes. Whatever mental luggage he’s carrying around, it has prevented him from being able to pitch at the Major League level. It has also prevented him from being able to pitch at the Double-A level which is evidenced by his 9.15 ERA in 19 2/3 innings. He allowed 23 runs, 20 of which were earned, 23 hits, and 26 walks in 17 games. This gig is over John, go home and work in a normal job or just enjoy that 38 save season you had in 1999. One last thing, I wouldn’t suggest riding on the #7 train to Shea ever in your lifetime as that purple haired kid, next to the queer with AIDS, next to the guy who just got out of prison for the 4th time, next to the 20-year-old woman with four kids is still looking for you!

At first they were going to stitch his upper and lower lips together, but then they learned Johnny hasn't yet learned to breath through his nose :hmm:

Oh and Jacqui, I think the freaks and assholes on the subway (as well as Puerto Ricans and Jews and Blacks and welfare mothers) only applies to the Number 7 train in Queens!
