"It doesn't do you a darned bit of good to go into the Hall of Fame after you are dead." -- Pete Rose, ESPN's "Sunday Conversation", Aug. 3, 2003

Bizarre (some might say sick), but therein lies the perfect compromise to the Rose/Hall of Fame question. Major League Baseball should announce to the world immediately that its ban on Rose will be lifted, thereby making him eligible for election to Cooperstown ... the day after he dies. How perfect is that? Rose gets what he deserves (bronzed immortality); Major League Baseball gets what it wants (a pound of pain and suffering). A little masochistic. You bet (Pete will). But no more than watching another interview with Rose.

That's what the most still don't understand, Pete wants it ALL back. He wants his HOF plaque. He wants a job in the game. He wants it all back today and on his terms. That's been his objective since the mess began.

What Mr. Rose fails to understand is that's also the reason this thing still isn't over. If he could accept less than everything or meet MLB halfway, this would have been over years ago.

During the initial investigation, Giamatti and Dowd offered Rose a way out and he passed fearing his soiled reputation might not allow him to regain everything.

Now, unable or unwilling to relent, Rose sits and pouts like a spoiled child. A child who will eventually, imo, get his own way once again, only reinforcing his selfcentered nature.

Rose's ongoing defiance, arrogance and failure to put the game he claims to love above his own selfish interest, has angered me nearly as much as his gambling habit has disappointed me.

I think one thing most people forget, is that he willingly signed the paper on his banishment for life. He wasn't coerced into doing it, he did it on his own free will. And a life banishment, should mean a life banishment. What happens after he is dead is up to baseball, but for now, he should not be allowed into baseball or the HOF. And even after he died, was Joe Jackson inducted to the HOF? No!! He made the biggest mistake in baseball, and paid for it. So should Rose.

Never said that, he was a great player, but geez is he a whiny baby!!! The only reason he wants back into baseball is for the money to feed his gambling addiction. If baseball lets him back in, he'll be back to Vegas in a heartbeat. I might boycot baseball if they let him back in. Life sentence is a life sentence

I have mixed feelings on the subject. But you can't deny his numbers while he was playing. His offense deserves to be in the Hall, officially.

But I don't think I'm too keen on him working in baseball again. There has to be some sort of permanent punishment.
