CYCLONES "WALK" INTO CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Brooklyn, NY -- September 7, 2003
For the second time in three years, the Brooklyn Cyclones have advanced to the New York Penn League Finals thanks to a 3-2 victory over the Oneonta Tigers in 10 innings. Reliever Robert Paulk picked up the win, allowing only one hit in two innings of work while striking out three.
With the win, the Cyclones advance to play the Williamsport Crosscutters for the NYPL championship. The series will begin on Tuesday in Williamsport before returning to Coney Island on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the KeySpan Park box office and over the phone at (718) 507-TIXX.
Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and sixth innings. But in the bottom of the sixth frame, Brooklyn's offense finally put some runs on the board. Jon Slack, who made an outstanding over-the-shoulder catch in the top of the inning to keep the deficit at two, walked to start the rally. Matt Watson moved Slack to second with a single between third and short to bring up Aaron Baldiris. Baldiris then stroked an RBI single up the middle to drive home Slack and cut the deficit in half. Ian Bladergroen would later add a one-out sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Watson with the tying run.
The score would remain tied at two until the bottom of the tenth when the Cyclones patience at the plate would drive home the winning run. Jon Slack started the inning with his third walk of the night and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rashad Parker. Matt Watson and Aaron Baldiris both walked to load the bases for pinch hitter Stacy Bennett. Bennett worked the count to 3-1 and when Oneonta reliever Anthony Tomey's fastball missed low and outside, Jon Slack scored to give Brooklyn the 3-2 win and the series victory.
The Cyclones victory sets up a rematch of the 2001 final which was cut short due to the tragic events on September 11th. The series will begin on Tuesday in Williamsport at 7:00 p.m. Games Two and, if necessary, Three, will be played on Coney Island, with both games set for 7:00 p.m.
