Mets purchase contracts of OF Matt Watson, 1B Mike Glavine
The New York Mets today, purchased the contracts of outfielder Matt Watson and first baseman Mike Glavine from Norfolk (AAA) of the International League. In order to make room on the Mets 40-man roster the Mets have transferred shortstop Jose Reyes to the 60 Day-DL and designated right-handed pitcher Jason Roach for assignment. Both Watson and Glavine will be available for tonight's 7:10 p.m. contest in Montreal. Watson will be wearing uniform number 50 while Glavine will be #27.
Watson, 24, spent the majority of the season with Norfolk, where he played in 74 games. Over his time with the Tides he hit .295 (75-254) with 40 runs, 18 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 55 RBI, and two stolen bases. The 5'11, 200 pound outfielder was placed on the 15-Day Disabled List with a strain to his left oblique muscle on April 10th. He began his minor league rehab assignment on May 6th with St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League where he played in two games. He batted .286 (2-7) with two runs, one triple two RBI and one stolen base in that time. He than was transferred to Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League on May 9th to continue his rehab assignment. There he played in eight games, hitting .393 (11-28) with six runs, three doubles, one home run, one RBI, and one stolen base. He was transferred back to Norfolk on May 23rd where he stayed until he was placed back on to the DL with a strain to his right oblique muscle on August 11th. He finished the season on rehab assignment with Brooklyn (A) of the New York Penn League where he compiled a .143 (2-14) batting average, with one double, and two stolen bases.
Glavine, the younger brother of Mets left-handed starting pitcher Tom Glavine, played in 79 games with Norfolk this season. In that time the 30 year-old lefty batted .266 (45-169) with 15 runs, 11 doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI. He was placed on the Disabled list on May 3rd with a strained right calf and was reinstated on May 29th. Over the month of August, Mike batted .327 (17-52) with seven runs, one home run and four RBI. The Massachusetts native played in 27 games at first base, 23 games as a designated hitter, and three as a left fielder. Glavine was originally a 22nd round draft pick in the 1995 June Free Agent Draft by the Cleveland Indians and has played in the minor league organizations of Cleveland and the Atlanta Braves.
