BALTIMORE -- Despite the affects of a strained back after a day of yard work, Sam Perlozzo will walk tall Tuesday into the Warehouse for his interview for the Orioles vacant managerial position.
Perlozzo said he is preparing one hour per day for the opportunity to become the next Baltimore manager, a post he has coveted since becoming a coach seven years ago. The management duo of Jim Beattie and Mike Flanagan has already talked to Hall of Famer Eddie Murray, who was impressive during his four-hour interview.

Because of Beattie's 25th wedding anniversary and the team's organizational meetings in Sarasota, Fla., Perlozzo's interview was pushed back to Tuesday, which has given him extra time to prepare.

Flanagan is especially familiar with Perlozzo, who served as the team's bench coach the past three seasons and was third base coach when Flanagan was the pitching coach. But Perlozzo is approaching the interview as if he has to make a new impression. He wants to shed the tag of being Mike Hargrove's right-hand man, despite their closeness.

"Everyone that manages a game and has a chance to do things, has their own style," he said. "I have my own way of doing things. I am not going to say, 'I don't like this, and I didn't like that.' If you're honest, your own self will come out. That's my No. 1 priority, to be honest."

Perlozzo was 4-8 while filling in for Hargrove during his mother's illness and eventual death. He used Hargrove's handpicked lineups and did not want to divert from his philosophy. But he has specific plans about how to manage the club and continue the Orioles' rebuilding project.

Many Orioles players respect Perlozzo and he has shared close relationships with many of the infielders he has worked with. But the former Major League infielder also realizes he is not the vogue pick for the job. Murray is a legendary Oriole and his selection would be lauded by fans who clamor for a return to The Oriole Way.

"It's a chance for me," Perlozzo said. "I try to be myself, I am not going to put on any shows. The easiest part of the interview is telling the truth. I can walk away thinking I don't have to worry about anything if I am honest. And I will have a definite plan."

Perlozzo said he has not been contacted about other jobs, although he was expected to be a hot managerial candidate this offseason. The only managerial job open is with the Chicago White Sox, and they are expected to interview Terry Francona and Ozzie Guillen for the position.

There was early speculation that Hargrove was a candidate for the White Sox job but he has not been interviewed. Perlozzo said he spoke with the former manager over the past few days.

"He sounded good," Perlozzo said. "I am due to call him. But he sounds OK. I think he is doing fine."

Beattie and Flanagan have retained all of the coaches for next season, although it is at the discretion of the new manager as to who will return. Perlozzo said he has a good relationship with Murray, who said he would have no problem working with the current staff. But Perlozzo also admitted that the rest of the staff is in a tenuous position, unsure if they will be working in 2004.

"I want to see this thing through," Perlozzo said. "I don't foresee something like [not returning] happening, but as soon as you say never. ... [We] still don't have a contract and you still don't know who you are working for. But it's flattering they brought us back."

Obviously Perlozzo wants to change his position for next season. When he was one of four finalists for the Seattle job last fall, he impressed Mariners officials with his knowledge of the current players and prospects. Perlozzo made a name for himself because he was prepared and had a plan.

That will be the case Tuesday and he hopes the results are different.

"I am very excited," he said. "I know what Sam Perlozzo is going to do, I'll walk out there and give it my best shot, and that is what I am trying to do. I am not in competition with anyone else but myself. And I will be ready."
