Phils release tentative schedule
By Ken Mandel / MLB.com

PHILADEPHIA -- The Citizens Bank Park era begins April 12, 2004 with a visit from the Reds and also includes a rematch of the 1980 World Series.

After 33 seasons at Veterans Stadium, the Phillies christen their new 43,000-seat ballpark with a nine-game homestand that starts the second week of the season.

The Expos and Marlins check out the place after the Reds, with each team playing a three-game series.

Just like in 1971 -- the last time they opened a new facility -- the Phillies begin the season in Pittsburgh on Monday, April 5. After three games against the Pirates, they arrive in Miami on April 9. There they will try to take some of the sting out of last season's sweep that knocked them out of playoff contention.

The Phillies began the 2003 season by taking two of three from the Marlins.

Though the concrete and steel facility will be gone, the organization will get nostalgic on June 18-20, when the Royals return to the location where Tug McGraw threw the most famous pitch in Phillies history.

The Tigers (June 15-17) and Orioles (July 2-4) also come to Philadelphia as part of the Interleague schedule. The Phillies travel to Chicago (June 8-9), Minnesota (June 11-13) and Boston (June 25-27). While the Phillies have been to Fenway Park, this will be their first visit to U.S. Cellular Field and the Metrodome.

The Phillies will see PETCO Park -- the new home of the Padres -- on Aug. 3-5.

Philadelphia will play their usual 19 games against each of their division foes: the Marlins, Braves, Expos and Mets. Besides the first homestand in April, the Marlins also visit Citizens Bank Park on July 21-22, then come to Philly for the final series of the regular season, Sept. 30-Oct. 3.

The NL-East champion Braves make their first visit for a four-game series on May 27-30, then return July 9-11 and Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

As with the 2003 season, weeknight and Saturday night games will begin at 7:05 p.m. ET, while Sunday home games will start at 1:35 p.m.

Season tickets will go on sale sometime in November, while single-game sales will likely begin in January.
