Too much blame being put on the fan's shoulders ... He had nothing to do with the three ensuing walks or the error.

"Too much" blame? I agree. But still, the fan is a complete moron. That said, I think 99 out of 100 fans would do the same thing in his position.

PopTop, that makes it two outs Gonzalez's error makes it 3 outs and we get out of the inning with a 3-1 lead. Too much blame? Eh..I'll give him 50% of the blame. He was a CUBS FAN FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD!!!
what an asshole

I agree......
I know it is easy to use this an as a scapegoat and if I were a Cubs fan I would hunt him down and kill him as well but honestly, when a ball is coming at you like that, are you thinking "oh, let me get out of the way and see if Alou can catch it"? or are you going to try and catch it????
Ball comes my way I'm not going the other way, I am trying to catch it..
I dont think I would have enough time to think about it....Just a natural reaction....

the fan has to pay the **** attention. a coupla fans were like we werent paying attention.
I feel sorry for this poor fan who don't desove blame.
You fail to understand the spot this fan ended up in.Just put yourself into his shoes. Your seatting there and here comes this object that is coming right at you moving over 90 mph and you have 1 secound to chose.
What do you do.Are you going to reach out and try and catch it or are you going seat there hoping some outfield saves your butt from a sure injury when this ball niles you.
And Frankly speaking I don't think many of you would chose the later or even have the guts to just stand there in the face danger.

Sorry, guys.. but there was nothing wrong with what the fan did. He did not reach into the field of play. Every one of you would do the same thing.

Bummer, Ray - I feel for ya' - and the idiot, too. He really didn't do anything wrong, but he sure made a bad career decision.
It's cool to have field seats and be close to the action, but I think people have a little added responsibility in that position, kinda' like sitting next to the emergency exits on planes - PAY ATTENTION!!!
When your team is on the field, STAY OUT OF THE WAY!!!
That guy is doomed, though. It won't be long before his balls are auctioned off on ebay, if it's not happening already.

90 MPH 645? Doubt that. It was dropping right in front of him. It was a fly ball, not a line drive, as someone pointed out.
I know its a natural reaction, but at the same time he has to know the situation. Had he known the situation of the game everything would have been different. I know people are being hard on him, its just kinda hard not too. It's not fair, but its true.

I was just looking at a poll on chicagosports.com asking if I would have caught the ball. One of the choices was "who knows--it's a spur of the moment choice"
I decided to choose that becuase I was not in his shoes. I'll admit he had to make a spur of the moment choice, but I believe he made the wrong one. For every choice there are consequences, and I don't think he ever would have believed the consequences would be so serious.

BD, first off there was still no guarantee that Alou catches it ... And are you blaming Gonzalez' error on this play as well?
I agree that the fan interfered with the ball, the photo clearly shows his arms and hands extended beyond the railing and reaching into the field of play though some want to disagree with that ... If MLB adopted and enforced rules for decent fan comportment at games, people sitting in the front rows at every ballpark would not even think about leaning over and going for a ball like that, people wouldn't throw any objects onto the field of play, including homers by visitors, and people wouldn't shout obscenities at other fans or players ... Instead of little Jeffrey Maier (sp?) being hailed as some hero and going on the talk show circuit, he and/or the adult who was supposed to be supervising him should've been banned from ever, EVER, attending an MLB game again ... Harsh? Yes ... But also very effective and this likely would've never happened.
But blaming the entire inning, the entire game and, potentially, the entire series on this guy is nothing more than a cheap excuse and scapegoat.

you should know willie that its all about momentum and pressure. the fans at boston had no problem getting out of the way of trot nixon in an earlier game.
is he solely at fault? of course not, but it did change momentum in what was still a pretty game.

Noo Willie I was simply saying that, after you said he doesn't deserve all of the blame, I give him half. And I am giving the other half to Gonzalez.

i dont blame him... but i think that had a TINY BIT to do with Gonzalez's error..... Gonzalez tried to hurry the throw to 2nd to try and get the DP... if he JUST has to throw to first maybe he makes the play?
but no blame should be on the fan

I find it remarkable that when a fan cost the Yankees a run in the 8th inning last night no one said a word. Yes, it is true that the run eventually scored anyhow, but why not an uproar then?? Why?? Because fans are a part of the game, just as bad calls are a part of the game. If your team can't overcome a missed foul ball, which in another 2 feet it would have been out of reach anyhow and been a moot point, then your team doesn't deserve to win a game.
