And 4 others pass through waivers. Robert Machado declares free agency. Someone should pick him up. I liked what I saw for the brief time he was up. Should be a good back-up catcher somewhere.
From MLB.com:
Orioles lose Douglass: Right-hander Sean Douglass was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins after the Orioles outrighted him from the 40-man roster. Douglass, once considered a top pitching prospect, was 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA in three outings with the O's this season and 10-8 with a 3.40 ERA for Triple-A Ottawa.
Douglass, 24, has potential, but he never was able to translate that at the Major League level. After winning two of his first three outings in 2001, Douglass did not record a win in his final 18 games as an Oriole. He was 0-5 with a 6.08 ERA in 2002.
Meanwhile, the Orioles had four players clear waivers: right-handed reliever Willis Roberts, third baseman Jose Leon, shortstop Felix Escalona and right-hander Mike Paradis.
Roberts, who went 3-1 with a 5.72 ERA in 26 games, spent the final three months on the disabled list with a partial tear of the right ulnar collateral ligament. That may have been a reason he went unclaimed. Roberts has a live fastball and strong arm but has never been able to gain consistency as a reliever.
Leon batted .241 with no home runs in 21 games in two stints with the Orioles. He likely will be invited to Spring Training. Escalona was acquired on waivers from Tampa Bay on May 19 and played in 10 minor league games before dislocating his right knee. He could serve as a backup infielder next season.
Paradis, a former No. 1 pick who had a solid Arizona Fall League in 2002, went 5-10 with a 5.27 ERA in 25 starts for Double-A Bowie, his third year with the Baysox. Paradis, once tabbed a can't-miss prospect, is 29-47 with a 4.97 ERA in five minor league seasons.
Catcher Robert Machado rejected his assignment to Ottawa and has elected to become a free agent. The Orioles have 32 players on their 40-man roster.
