ANGRY BOSS MUM ON CASHMAN'S YANK FUTURE

October 26, 2003 --

Ninety minutes after watching the Marlins celebrate a World Series championship on his team's home field, George Steinbrenner stepped into the dark, fall night outside a defeated and quiet Yankee Stadium, leaving little doubt that heads would roll.

General manager Brian Cashman seems to be first on The Boss's hit list.

When asked if manager Joe Torre would return, Steinbrenner said, "I've said many times, 'Yes.' "

When asked about Cashman, Steinbrenner's response was ominous.

"Very satisfied with Joe," Steinbrenner said.

Steinbrenner then was asked if there would be changes. He issued a terse, "No comment," before stepping into his car and being whisked away.

Steinbrenner might dismiss those statements in days to come, but there has to be at least one scapegoat for his Yankees not winning baseball's grand prize for a third straight year. The underdog Marlins won Game 6, 2-0, and took the series 4-2.

"Last year, he wasn't happy," Torre said of The Boss before the game. "I don't think that was any secret."

Two years ago, the Yankees lost the World Series in seven games to the Diamondbacks. Last year, the Bombers were upset by the Angels in the ALDS.

When he arrived at the Stadium, Steinbrenner was asked if he was confident that his team could rally from a 3-2 deficit.

"Well, we better," said Steinbrenner. "If we don't there's no tomorrow."

One source said Steinbrenner was pacing in his office in the late innings as the Yankees were unable to rally. Another person close to Steinbrenner said he was in a terrible mood after the game.

During the ALDS against the Twins, a volatile Steinbrenner said he was going to dismiss Cashman from the final year of his contract and revoke his option for 2005, which would make him free to speak to the Mets about their GM job.

It's looking bad for Cashman. Usually when Steinbrenner has an idea in his head, he'll do it. No affirmation required from anyone else. Cashman's gone.

It does appear that Joe is safe however, at least for the time being. However, Zim and Stottlemyre won't be back next year, any thoughts on who will replace those guys?

Add Rick Down to the list of people we need replacements for. I think he's first in line for the guillotine.

I haven't heard any rumors about who will replace Mel and Zim yet :notme:. Luis Sojo would make a good bench coach though :D.

If George fires Cashman, he is a GIANT idiot. George was the one screaming for Contreras, Weaver, Boone, etc.........

Cashman will have a new job in seconds.

Neil Allen is the frontrunner to replace Mel as Pitching Coach.

Chili Davis is rumored to replace Down as Hitting Coach.
