CHICAGO -- WGN Radio broadcaster and former Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo was expected to undergo surgery Tuesday for bladder cancer in Arizona. Santo was diagnosed with the illness during a routine physical exam in late September.
Santo, 63, has had his share of offseason operations. The last two winters, he has had both legs amputated below the knee because of complications with diabetes.

This was his 14th season as the color commentator on Cubs radio broadcasts. The team officially retired his No. 10 in a ceremony Sept. 28.

He was limited to only covering home games during the Division Series in the postseason games before returning to his Arizona home. The Cubs players hung his No. 10 jersey in the dugout during the National League Championship Series.

Thanks for the memories: Eric Karros expressed his gratitude to the Cubs and their fans in a full page ad in the Oct. 26 Chicago Tribune sports section.

The ad, which featured a photo of Karros, said, "Thank you to the Chicago Cubs fans and the entire Cubs organization for your support. You have all provided my family and me with an unbeatable experience and memories to last a lifetime. Warmest regards, Eric Karros."

Karros kept a video diary of the Cubs season, beginning Sept. 1. The Cubs are not likely to re-sign the veteran, who turns 36 on Nov. 4.

Acquired last December along with infielder Mark Grudzielanek from Los Angeles, Karros batted .286 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs in 114 games.

Free agent update: Outfielders Doug Glanville, Troy O'Leary and Tom Goodwin have each filed for free agency.

Glanville, acquired from the Texas Rangers July 30, batted .235 in 28 games with the Cubs and delivered a key RBI triple in the 11th inning of Game 3 of the National League Championship Series.

O'Leary hit .218 in 93 games with the Cubs while Goodwin batted .287 in 87 games and led the team with 19 stolen bases.

Other Cubs eligible for free agency include pitchers Antonio Alfonseca, Shawn Estes and Dave Veres, outfielder Kenny Lofton and infielder Tony Womack.

The Cubs have an option on pitchers Matt Clement and Mark Guthrie, and there is a mutual option with second baseman Mark Grudzielanek.
