For the Padres, 2004 will be about taking the next step.

To help them in taking that step, and a big one it is, the club will open their new ballpark.

The Padres will take the field at PETCO Park next season as they look to return to contention in the NL West.

With their final exhibition games of Spring Training, the Padres will get their first look at PETCO Park when they host the Mariners on April 3 and 4. The Padres will then have their home opener April 8 when the Giants are in town for the first regular-season game at PETCO Park.

The ballpark's shakedown cruise will actually take place a couple of weeks prior when San Diego State University hosts the Aztec Invitational. The eight-team tournament held March 11-14 will feature all of the local college baseball teams. Tony Gwynn and his Aztecs will battle USD, UCSD and Point Loma Nazarene, as well as the University of Houston, Nebraska, Long Beach State and UCLA.

Construction is moving along on a ballpark that features three levels with a lower bowl and two upper levels. Designers were intent on creating an intimate feel, so each of the 42,000 fixed seats is angled toward the action and the height of the first row of the upper deck is only 66 feet above the playing field. By comparison, Qualcomm Stadium's middle deck, the loge level, begins three feet higher than PETCO Park's top deck.

The ballpark has a natural stone and stucco exterior and offer views of San Diego Bay, the downtown skyline, Balboa Park and Coronado. In addition, PETCO Park is situated near the city's hottest entertainment zone, the Gaslamp District.

Season ticket options begin with 20-game packages with half-season and full-season plans also available.
