Rheal Cormier won the first-ever Web Gem Award from ESPN's
Baseball Tonight for an outstanding defensive play by a
pitcher. Cormier's play came in the top of the ninth inning
the first night after the all-star break as the visiting
Montreal Expos threatened to take the lead. With the score
tied at two, Cormier fielded a short ground ball in front
of home plate and shoveled home to Mike Lieberthal to
retire the potential go-ahead run attempting to score from
third base. Marlon Byrd later hit a walk-off home run for
the Phillies to win the game.

Cormier beat out nominees Jake Peavy of San Diego, Jae Seo
of the Mets, Greg Maddux of Atlanta, and Jeff D'Amico of
Pittsburgh for the award selected by the staff of Baseball
Tonight, including Karl Ravech, Harold Reynolds and Bobby
Valentine.

Other Phillies nominated for Web Gem Awards were first
baseman Jim Thome for a diving play and flip to Brett Myers
against the Expos, and shortstop Jimmy Rollins for a diving
force play against the Pirates and Tomas Perez.

Randy Wolf was recently named the National League's top
lefthanded pitcher by The Sporting News. The voting is done
by major league managers, executives and scouts.

AFL UPDATE

Six players from the Phillies organization are taking part
in the Arizona Fall League. Third baseman Travis Chapman
along with righthanders Keith Bucktrot, Dan Giese, Josh
Hancock, Bobby Korecky and Matt Squires are all playing for
the Mesa Desert Dogs.

Chapman got one at-bat (0-1) as a September call-up for the
Phillies this season. He's playing both first and third
base for the Desert Dogs, a move that Assistant GM Mike
Arbuckle said may help him get to the big leagues faster.

"We wanted Travis to play first base because it enhances
his value, not just to us, but also for himself," said
Arbuckle. "Being able to play both positions makes him more
versatile coming off the bench at the big league level."

Chapman has been chronicling his experiences in the AFL
with updates on phillies.com >>

Also competing in Arizona is righthander Ryan Madson,
who made his major league debut with the Phillies in late
September after winning 12 games for triple-A Scranton.
Ryan Madson has made Team USA's 24-man roster for the
Olympic baseball qualifying competition.
