The Phillies have announced seven more non-roster invitees to Spring Training, bringing the total number to eleven.

P.J. Forbes (INF) Forbes hit .305 for AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, which was the 4th-best batting average in the International League, with 29 doubles and 61 RBI. Forbes, 34, appeared in three games for the Phillies during September and hit .286 (2-7).

Brett Myers (RHP) Ranked as the Phillies' 2nd-best prospect by Baseball America, Myers was 13-4 with a 3.87 ERA for AA Reading in 2001. The 21-year-old former boxer made the successful jump from low-A in 2000 to double-A in 2001 and pitched two scoreless innings in Major League Baseball's All-Star Futures Game at SAFECO Field in Seattle. Myers was the Phillies' first round selection (12th overall) in the June, 1999 draft.

Jeremy Salazar (C) A 25-year-old catcher in the Phillies minor league system, Salazar hit .231 in 47 games with Scranton. From July through September, he hit .344 (22-64) in 18 games. Salazar was selected by the Phillies in the 19th round of the June, 1998 draft.

Gene Schall (1B) Schall had his 2001 season at Scranton cut short due to a wrist injury suffered in July. He hit .281 with 14 home runs and 54 RBI in just 73 games with the Red Barons. A Villanova University product, the 31-year-old Schall was originally selected by the Phillies in the 4th round of the June, 1991 draft. Of his 11 years in professional baseball, eight have been with the Phillies organization, including stints with the big league club in 1995 and 96.

Chase Utley (2B) Utley enters his second spring training with the Phillies as a non-roster invitee. With single-A Clearwater this season, the 23-year-old hit .257 with 16 home runs and 59 RBI. Utley was a Florida State League All-Star and participated with Myers in the All-Star Futures Game, where he went 2-for-3 with a home run, 2
RBI and a stolen base. Utley was the Phillies' first round selection (15th overall) in the June, 2000 draft.

Jerry Valdez (C) Valdez, 27, spent most of the season with Reading, where he hit .248 with 9 home runs and 48 RBI in 74 games. He hit .308 during a brief five-game stint with Scranton. Valdez was selected by the Phillies in the 25th round of the June, 1997 draft.

Bobby Van Iten (C) Playing for Reading, the versatile Van Iten manned four positions for the R-Phils in 2001: catcher, first base, third base and right field. In 113 games, he hit .228 with seven home runs and 52 RBI. Following the season, Van Iten, a 17th round selection by the Phillies in the June, 1996 draft, was invited to play in the Arizona Fall League.

Additionally, the Phillies have announced the instruction staff for Spring Training. They include Ruben Amaro Sr., catching coordinator Mick Billmeyer, Scranton manager Marc Bombard, field coordinator Bill Dancy, pitching coordinator Gorman Heimueller, major league scout Hank King, hitting coordinator Don Long, Scranton coach Jerry Martin, Scranton pitching coach Mike Mason, infield coordinator Ron Oester and outfield/base running instructor Milt Thompson.
