KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Royals took another step toward solidifying their starting rotation Thursday by re-signing veteran free agent right-hander Paul Byrd to a one-year contract.

Byrd, who went 6-6 with a 4.05 earned run average for the Royals last season, started the offseason arbitration eligible. The Royals did not tender him a contract by Dec. 20, making Byrd a free agent. But the organization's desire all along was to retain Byrd, who made about $650,000 last season.

"It worked out well," said Royals Assistant General Manager Muzzy Jackson. "Paul did a great job for us last year and he wanted to be a Royal. He worked with us and we were able to come to an agreement."

Byrd was obtained by the Royals on June 5, 2001, for right-hander Jose Santiago. Byrd, 31, developed a screwball under the guidance of pitching coach Al Nipper and thrived after the All-Star break with five consecutive wins. He developed arm fatigue late in the season, but an MRI did not reveal any structural damage. Byrd had labrum surgery in August 2000.

Of the seven arbitration-eligible Royals at the start of the offseason, the cases of Carlos Febles, Carlos Beltran, Jose Rosado and Neifi Perez are still pending.
