The move clears a spot for an additional minor-league prospect when the 40-man roster is submitted today.
The Rockies should have enough room to protect their top prospects when they submit their 40-man roster today. Among those minor-leaguers likely to be added are relievers Justin Huisman and Scott Dohmann and outfielder Cory Sullivan. Reliever Steve Reed, for whom the Rockies would receive draft-pick compensation if he signs elsewhere, is the one free agent whose future likely will be decided by Dec. 7, the deadline for offering salary arbitration.
Belliard, who became the first minor-league invitee in franchise history to start on opening day, resurrected his career last season. He hit .277 with eight homers and 50 RBIs, including eight on Sept. 23 against Arizona.
He also committed 15 errors. He looked good, even great, when turning double plays, but way too many bleeders found the outfield between his feet.
I never thought I'd say this, but the Rox need to get Neifi Perez back - that middle infield has been a black hole since he left. I know he can't hit, not consistantly, anyway. His glove was worth the trade-off.
And while they're at it, get Cirillo back at third. Defense is such a huge part of being successful at Coors Field, I don't see how they can continue to ignore it.
