Two Japanese teams hope to play Yankees
November 20, 2003
Tokyo (AP) — Two Japanese teams hope to play exhibition games against the New York Yankees next year if the AL champions open the 2004 season overseas.
“If the Yankees and another team come to Japan, there are plans for the Yankees to play exhibition games against the Hanshin Tigers and the Yomiuri Giants,” said Kunio Shimoda, director of public relations for the commissioner of Japanese baseball.
New York outfielder Hideki Matsui won three MVP awards with the Giants, Japan’s most popular team.
The Tigers won the Central League pennant this season.
The Major League Baseball commissioner’s office asked the Yankees on Monday to consider moving their 2004 season opener against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to Japan.
Both teams and the players’ association would have to agree to the shift.
The Yankees have never played regular-season games outside the United States and Canada.
