NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees announced Thursday that they have designated infielder-outfielder Clay Bellinger for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for left-handed pitcher David Wells.

Bellinger, 33, batted .160 (13-for-81) with five home runs and 12 RBIs in 51 games for the Yankees in 2001. He also appeared in 26 games for Triple-A Columbus, batting .214 (21-for-98) with one home run and nine RBIs. Bellinger established career-highs when he hit two home runs and collected four RBIs against Tampa Bay on Aug. 15, 2001.

Bellinger has played all three seasons of his Major League career with the Yankees, batting .194 (60-for-310) with 12 HRs and 35 RBIs in 181 games. He was originally selected by the San Francisco Giants in the second round of the 1989 First-Year Player Draft.

The Yankees also announced that right-handed pitcher Ryan Bradley, who was designated for assignment on Jan. 4, has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Columbus.

Bradley, 26, compiled a 7-6 record over 96 1/3 innings between Class-A Tampa and Double-A Norwich. He posted a 2-1 record for the Yankees in 1998 with a 5.86 ERA. Bradley was originally selected by the Yankees in the first round (40th overall) in the 1997 First-Year Player Draft.

Bradley was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for right-handed pitcher Brett Jodie, who was claimed off of waivers from the San Diego Padres last week.
