Having lost lefty reliever Kelly Wunsch for the season, the Sox sought to bolster their bullpen Friday when they acquired left-handed reliever Alan Embree and cash considerations from the San Francisco Giants for minor-league reliever Derek Hasselhoff.

Embree is expected to be in uniform in time for Saturday’s game against Baltimore. A roster move will be announced at that time. Embree, 31, is 0-2 with no saves, an 11.25 earned-run average and 25 strikeouts in 22 relief appearances with the Giants this season.

In 325 career games over eight major-league seasons with Cleveland, Atlanta, Arizona and the Giants, Embree has gone 17-17 with four saves, a 4.85 ERA and 283 strikeouts.

His best season came with Atlanta in 1997 when he was 3-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 46 innings. In his first season with San Francisco in 1999, Embree appeared in a career-high 68 games.

Hasselhoff, 27, was 6-1 with a 2.03 ERA and six saves in 34 relief outings this season with Class AAA Charlotte. He allowed 41 hits, walked 12 and struck out 41. In seven seasons in the Sox minor-league system, the right-hander went 43-17 with a 3.54 ERA in 245 games.

To make room for Embree on the 40-man roster, the White Sox transferred right-handed reliever Bill Simas to the 60-day disabled list.
