WASHINGTON--NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue lashed out at broadcast partner ESPN's new fictional pro-football drama Playmakers. "Everyone feels that it's a rather gross mischaracterization of oar sport," he told CNN last Thursday. The league and the NFL Players Association, he added, have had discussions with ESPN, bet he did not elaborate. Tagliabue was in Washington for the NFL's season-opening festivities.

Early in the show's creation, ESPN apparently approached the league on collaborating an Play. makers, which depicts football on and off-the-field and tackles thorny issues like drug use.

ESPN, however, remains steadfast. "Playmakers is a drama, and the storylines could come from any sport and any part of society," said an ESPN spokesperson. "Professional football is just the backdrop."

After two premiere episodes, Playmakers is averaging a 2.3 household rating.

Funny after seeing LT on 60 minutes playmakers looks like a PG-13 show to the NFL XXX show.

i hate LT too (#56, not #21)

however, I thoroughly enjoy Playmakers yet it seems very likely it wont be back next year and that sucks. Screw Tagliabue, the show was great for its sports and drama; i didn't even compare it to the NFL (except for that Hawkins kid who was a Mike Vick clone)

I have never seen the show, nor do I care to. It's bad enough that ESPN sometimes shows things like bowling and soccer (;)) do they really have to show soap operas now too?? ?

I also haven't seen the show ... and I also have no desire to see it. But if it's as inaccurate as the NFL is portraying it as, then why the hell is he so upset over it??

Shawn, how could you forget to add poker to the list of "sports" ESPN is now showing??

Agreed that LT is a jerk. Him saying things like "I can't say it's something I'll never go back to" is crazy. And taking cocaine every day for a year? He's damn lucky he didn't kill himself.

Yeah, I get scared that one day they are no longer going to show sports, like MTV doesn't show music anymore. They need to stop trying to make shows, I hate that junk. The show might be great, but I'll never know, because you won't catch me watching it.

I agree, they wouldn't be making a fuss if this stuff wasn't at least partially true. I think it's probably even worse than how they are portraying it on the show. I mean, they probably have morals on the show to make the cahracters more likeable.

That isn't true in real life. Maybe the NFL is right, and the show is innacurate. It makes the players look too good.
