Curt Schilling's now in Boston. Will Alex Rodriguez join him?
According to a Thursday report on DallasNews.com, the Texas Rangers would trading A-Rod to the Boston Red Sox -- for the right considerations, of course.
Sources told The Dallas Morning News that the Rangers would entertain dealing the $252 million man and 2003 American League MVP to Boston in exchange for outfielder Manny Ramirez.
The catch, according to the report, is that the Red Sox would have to absorb A-Rod's contract, which has seven years and about $180 million left on it; and, the Sox would have to pay part of Ramirez's $20 million-per-season tag. The slugger has four years left on his contract.
"My position on all trades is that I'm not going to comment one way or another," Rangers GM John Hart told the paper.
A major league source told the Morning News that A-Rod would like to join the Red Sox. Another source close to the star shortstop indicated he wants to leave Texas.
The Morning News report said a couple of factors must come into play to complete the trade. Those factors include:
The Rangers saving at least $10 million per year. Half of that savings would come from swapping A-Rod with Ramirez straight up. The rest would need to come from the Red Sox paying part of Ramirez's salary. In essence, the Red Sox would be paying A-Rod an average of $25 million to $30 million for each of the next five years.
The Red Sox would have to deal with the Nomar Garciaparra issue, perhaps dealing him to either Anaheim or Los Angeles.
------------------------
I'm sorry, but I do NOT want to see A-Rod coming to Boston. Not only will we have to pay his HUGE ASS salary each year, we'll have to eat some of Manny's salary as well each year. Basically paying somebody who ain't even on the team. This A-Rod trade isn't worth it in my opinion.

Make Hicks and the Rangers ride that pony the whole length of the contract, I say.

the only way you make that trade is if texas picks up all the contract up of man ram's. and get a coupla good prospects to soften the blow of the extra salary.
otherwise, yep forget about it.

There is no way in shit that the Sox will pick up A-Rod's contract AND pay part of Manny's. Absolutely no way it hell.
I refuse to speak anymore about A-Rod. :shh:

The Sox have a lot of cash, but to expect them to absorb part of Manny's contract for the "honor" of getting A-rod is absurd. True, they wouldn't have Nomah's contract anymore, but it's still absurd.
Hicks needs to stop doing whatever drugs he must be taking.

Of course Hicks is saying this. Of course it's NOT reality. Both sides are desperate to dump their guy.
Frankly, I don't want this deal to get done. Losing Nomah and Manny is too much, unless you get something FABULOUS in return for Nomah.
But, a deal most likely WILL get done. Too much smoke for no fire.
And yes, I think the Sox WOULD eat $5 mill a year to dump Manny.
This is so sad. Having to lose Nomah just to dump Manny's sorry ass.

I don't want to lose Nomah either, but I think he'll leave after the 2004 season anyway. In any case, I don't think we're going to get A-Rod. I don't see that deal getting done.

I'm not so sure Nomah would leave. I'm not sure how he really feels.
I dunno. I have mixed feelings about all of this.
Somehow, Grady is at fault.

Yeah, Boston writers keep telling us that Nomar wants to leave, but he and Mia insist he is happy here. But if so many writers are saying he wants to leave, there has got to be some validity to it.
I see Manny playing out his contract here and leaving when it's up. And we all know how accurate my predictions always are. :smokin:

Well Babs, hell, those other fans of other teams don't need to rob banks to buy a ticket. Those fans have seen their teams win a WS in the last 500 years.
Well, except Chicago fans.:D

Can you imagine what kinda pitching we can have fior $20 million a year? We can sign the Colon's, the Vasquez's, the Pettite's and the Foulke's. But with Manny, Dan, basically, freaking handcuffed the Sox with his freaking contract. BASTARD!!! He just wanted to try to look like hes another Hicks by signing a big name player, to an even bigger contract. Just insane. Im pissed right now. PP got me pumped up. Im ready to kick some Duquettes ass.

True.
Can you imagine if he was still with us?? Can you imagine all the deperate moves he might have made??? We might even have Vlad, with a 10 year contract for another $20 million/ year. :freak:

More than likely we'll get A-Rod and his BIG ASS contract and we'll even have to pay some of Manny's just so he can leave. Of course, that means Nomar will be pushed out and he'll be traded to Anaheim or Los Angeles (sorry I don't believe what every reporter says. How do they know what Nomar wants anyways when he doesn't even talk to them in the first place? :hmm: Seems like they are assuming to me). And Nomar has stated before in the past that he would like to stay in Boston. I guess Theo doesn't care.
All I got to say if we get A-Rod the Pay-Rod, he better hit 60 home runs and drive in 140 RBI's a year for us.
However, on the positive side to all this (so very little there is, I think), we'll see A-Rod hit his 500th and possibly even his 600th home runs in a Red Sox uniform.
Then again, we could probably see Manny hit 500 in a Red Sox uniform as well.
I say bring on Duquette. I want to put my foot up his ass.

Excuse me, "At least those fans saw their team win a World Series in the last 500 years." I would settle for a playoff series win much less World Series.

RedSoxman-I agree 100% with your post.
Zilla, my condolences, HOWEVER, try losing EVERY year to your mortal enemy. NOTHING is worse.

There is no way the Sox should agree to a deal in which they take on A-Rod's contract AND eat a portion of Manny's deal, too.
Can't either A-Rod or Nomar play third? A-Rod is an offensive marvel, but losing both Manny and Nomar's bats seems a bit much, even with the addition of Schilling on the hill.

Trots,
I don't think Boston's front office can afford to have both Nomar and A-Rod playing together. Nomar will need to be re-signed after the '04 season, and I'm sure they'd just rather trade him before that happens.
But I agree with you, though. It seems sort of odd that Boston is willing to get rid of two good players for one really good player. Let's compare stats real fast.
I'm going to combine Nomar's and Manny's stats from the '03 season against A-Rod's.
Manny & Nomar had a combined 65 home runs between them and 209 RBI's.
A-Rod had 47 home runs and 118 RBI's.
The difference?
18 home runs and 91 RBI's. Might not seem like a lot, but who we gonna get to get those numbers back?
A-Rod also had a .298 BA compared to Nomar's .301 and Manny's .325
But A-Rod only had 8 fielding errors compared to Nomar's 20.

any chance we could just move Mueller Time to second and keep both world-class SS's, moving one of them to third??? i know it would seem completely unnatural for whoever had to move, but hey, Cal did it and he was perhaps one of the best SS's ever....
just something to consider (cause we'd of course have to re-sign Nomar for more $$)
