Well, it looks as if the Braves are going to add another piece to the puzzle. Sportingnews.com is reporting that the Braves are closing in on a deal with former Ranger John Thomson.

The Braves, poised to make their first significant off-season addition, are closing in on an agreement with free-agent right-hander John Thomson.

The deal, believed to be in the two-year, $7 million range, could be announced as soon as Tuesday. Thomson, 30, would replace departed free agent Greg Maddux, joining a rotation that includes Russ Ortiz, Mike Hampton and Horacio Ramirez.

The addition of Thomson likely would end the possibility of free-agent righthander Kevin Millwood returning to Atlanta. The Braves traded Millwood to Philadelphia last season when they did not want to pay him a salary of nearly $10 million, and their view of Millwood as a middle-of-the-rotation starter hasn't changed.

Millwood's best option might be to accept arbitration from the Phillies, pitch for a salary of at least $11 million next season, then re-enter the market. The White Sox, however, are among the clubs that could pursue him; they reportedly are on the verge of losing Bartolo Colon to the Angels.

The Rangers, who have attempted to retain Thomson with a reported two-year, $6.5 million offer, offered him salary arbitration Sunday night with the goal of continuing negotiations. But Thomson would benefit from leaving the Rangers, a last-place team that plays in one of the worst pitcher's parks in the majors, for the perennially strong Braves, who play in the more friendly pitching environment of Turner Field.

Thomson finished 13-14 with a 4.85 ERA last season, but several major-league executives believe he is on the verge of a career breakthrough. He went 9-5 with a 3.89 ERA in his last 18 starts, finishing with career-highs in games started (35), innings pitched (217) and strikeouts (136). He also ranked 11th in the American League in strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Thomson obviously isn't as accomplished a pitcher as Maddux, but the Braves would expect him to pitch deeper into games at a salary that almost certainly will be more than $10 million less than the $14.75 million that Maddux earned last season.

The Braves also need to replace the offense they will lose with departed free agents Gary Sheffield and Javy Lopez, and the Twins' signing of outfielder Shannon Stewart to a three-year, $18 million contract Sunday night could lead them to trade outfielder Jacque Jones.

The other area the Braves want to address is eighth-inning relief. They are one of several teams pursuing free-agent righthander Tim Worrell, the former Giants' closer who could serve as a setup man for John Smoltz.

Doesn't look like this could be too bad. The guy eats up innings, doesn't walk too many people, and is a lot less than Maddux. Good addition, if all goes through.

I'm not so sure that I would be too excited about Thompson....

Obviuosly his ERA is a bit inflated due to his time at Coors but he has NEVER shown me to be anything but a bad pitcher who although he doesnt walk many, gives up a ton of hits....

Guess we'll see if he improves with the Leo...

In his last 14 starts of the season, he was 9-5 with a 3.8ish ERA. Looks to me like he's coming around. But we shall see.

Remember how everybody was scratching their heads when they picked up John Burkett who couldn't even pitch for Tampa Bay? And in less than two years under Leo he was in the All-Star Game and then became a sought after free agent. Can he work the same magic with Thomson? We shall see indeed.

Big Red was a helluva hurler - until he had shoulder surgery in the 2000 off-season. Since then, he hasn't been close. He's lost probably 6-8 mph off of his fastball, but seems to be getting another pitch or two - his sinking slider was looking good towards the end of last season -

To me, this is a lot of money for a guy who's career year sports a line of 13-14 with a 4.85 ERA, but that's just the way baseball is these days.

I hope he does well, not for Atlanta's sake, but his own - he's a good guy that's had a lot of problems (like driving his 'Vette through picture windows while hammered) - hope he's getting his stuff together.

I have to agree with Bill here. Thomson would have some really good games and then he would have some real real bad games. It was hit or miss with him but you keep hearing about how good he could be. He had blister problems to alot there for a year or two and getting over his hurts that he racked up in Denver. I think he could be a good pitcher if the right man gets him. And we all know that the Braves have that guy. I think Thomson will fit in nice with the Braves and do good for them. Hell look Neagle was a good pitcher for the Braves and then he is now a crappy pither for the Rox. Hampton was a crappy pitcher for the Rox and now is a good pitcher for the Braves. So Thomson about has to be ok for the Braves.

Ah, but big difference is that Hampy was pretty darn good before he went to the Rox, with Houston and the Mets and Neagle was good in Pittsburgh before he went to Atlanta or Colorado...

Both guys showed promise before ever going to Atlanta or Colorado as well as after in the case of Hampy...

Thompson stunk in Colorado and has continued his stinkiness with the Mets and Texas...

He's done nothing to make me think he is anything but a subpar pitcher...

Again, working with Leo should definitely help but I'm not sure how much:umm
