Red Sox sign shortstop Luis Soto
EL TORO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC -- The Boston Red Sox have signed shortstop Luis Soto, a native of Bani, Dominican Republic, to a minor league contract. Prior to signing, Soto made several visits to the Red Sox at their new academy in the Dominican. Director of International Scouting Louie Eljaua made the announcement.
"Luis is the type of prospect we hope our new academy will help attract on a consistent basis," said Eljaua. "During his visits here in El Toro, Luis liked the way he was treated, enjoyed working out at our facility and felt very comfortable in his surroundings."
The switch-hitting Soto, who is six-foot-one and 179 pounds, turned 18 last Sunday and played for the defending champion Baseball America team in the World Woodbat Tournament in Jupiter, Florida this fall.
"Luis brings a special blend of talent and instincts every time he steps on the field," said Eljaua. "He has an advanced hitting approach at the plate for someone his age, and he is very athletic with above-average arm strength."

I guess he'll be good trading bait in a few years.
