that is excited as hell about the prospect of A-Rod coming here? I get all giddy as a schoolgirl when I read about how close the two sides are to striking a deal. I know A-Rod coming here probably means the end of Nomar's days here, but let's face it, A-Rod is a better player in every aspect of his game and then some: Offense, defense, base running, leadership, public relations...you name it. A-Rod will be adored in Boston. Yes, it sucks that Nomar is probably gone, but we could very well be a better team in '04, and that will be scary to the rest of baseball.

I have not heard too many of you getting excited about the possibility of the best player in baseball about to join our team. Well, I think Bob is excited but he's not talking about it.

You know I lub ya, Babs...but I totally refuse to talk about A-Rod til it happens. :D

And youre right about the Nomah thing. They offered him a 4 year extension, and now his agent is trying to make the Sox look like the bad guys?? EFF HIM!!! I like Nomah alot, but hes not Jeter money. I dont even think that Jeter is worth Jeter money.

Nope. :D

I read an article at boston.com this morning that got me excited, Bob. Here is the beginning of it. The rest if just a review of the John Henry/Nomar's Agent exchange.

Market forces push Sox toward shortstop shift
By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff, 12/10/2003

Maybe it can still all fall apart. But the juxtaposition of two events yesterday -- John Henry calling out Nomar Garciaparra's agent in the Dominican Republic, and the discussions of Alex Rodriguez and his agent, Scott Boras, with union officials regarding the proposed restructuring of Rodriguez's contract -- suggests it is inevitable that Garciaparra is out and A-Rod is in as the Red Sox shortstop, probably in a matter of days.

The union is not called upon by a player in such matters unless a deal is close to being struck. There may still be negotiating left to be done by Henry and Rangers owner Tom Hicks over the terms of the actual trade, and whether the Sox should offer the Rangers even more financial relief than just taking Rodriguez's bloated contract ("If I were the Red Sox, I wouldn't give them another thing, until maybe the last minute," one major league executive said yesterday) along with dispatching Manny Ramirez. But clearly there has been sufficient contact between Rodriguez and the Red Sox to suggest that some contract revisions have been proposed that will make the roughly $190 million left on A-Rod's contract somewhat more palatable to Boston.

I can't let myself get excited until A-rod is at the press conference with a Sox jersey on.

But the next question is, do they do it BEFORE Nomah is outta here, or after?

It has got to be after. Can you imagine trading Nomar before a deal for A-Rod is completed, then having the A-Rod deal fall apart? That would be BAD BAB BAD.

I can understand why Sox fans a re giddy about this deal. What's not to love about getting A-Rod and getting rid of Manny, even if it does mean the end to Nomar's days in Boston.

Don't take this the wrong way, Sox Nation, but there's also a part of me that wants to see A-Rod and Tom Hicks stuck with each other for the entire length of that ridiculous contract they signed. And part of me wants to see the Sox --- even though I understand it was the former regime and Dan Duh-quette who did it --- stuck with Manny's malcontented ass for the length of that deal as well.

Pops, as a Sox die-hard, I see A-Rod coming here a step in the right direction towards ending our World Series drought. I could not care less about the dynamics/relationship between Rodriguez and Hicks, I only care about making the Red Sox better. Adding A-Rod and dumping Manny is a MAJOR change in the right direction. :)

I agree, Baboon ... If you remove all of the money from the calculations, adding Rodriguez and getting rid of Manny is a very positive step towards Boston going to the Series.

But I'd still like to see Hicks pay for his stupid little spree a few years ago that did more to inflate player salaries than anything Steinbrenner's done the past 10 years.

Hicks will be stuck with Manny for a few years. That is at least some form of punishment.

I'm excited as hell, I just don't want to say anything until it's a done deal. But trust me, A-Rod in Bean Town will be awesome!! Not to mention whom ever we get for Nomah.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't like it.

We will now have lost Nomah, Manny, and Walker. HALF of our offense from last year. Who will protect AROD in the line-up?

I DESPISE Manny, but you better have a helluva #4 guy waiting in the wings. No one will pitch to Arod. Ortiz, Mueller, Nixon all had career years, expect them to drop off, significantly.

Unless we get a big slugger, I think we win far fewer games next year.

But our pitching staff is better, so we will not have to score 15 runs a game. Rememebr how many games we lost last year when scoring 10 runs? That was rediculous.

A lineup that includes Mueller, Nixon, A-Rod, Ortiz, and Millar can still score a lot of runs, although I agree that we won't score as many as last year. But again, I don't think we'll need to.

It'll be interesting to see who we get for Nomah. Troy Glaus would be very nice.

Good way to look at it, thanks Baboon!

Who is going to play 2B for the Sox next season?????

Fragmentsofme
12-10-2003, 12:30 PM
Depends, we get a 3B, Mueller, if not, whoever we get in the trade. Rumor are we get Kennedy and Washburn right now, so Kennedy would play 2B. If we get neither a 2B or 3B, then Damian Jackson :barf:

We don't HAVE a 2nd baseman. We need a lot of stuff, and I can't see any money left to do anything IF we get PAYROD.

We have the same problem if we keep Manny. A-Rod seems to be willing to restructure his contract, freeing up some immediate payroll dollars.

I think getting Adam Kennedy would be a nice 2B fill. read Barzilla's post about that scenario.

Kennedy's numbers are very comparable to Walker's, plus Kennedy is a better fielder and a few million dollars cheaper.

PissedPrincess
12-10-2003, 12:55 PM
I didn't find his numbers comparable. He has FAR more strikeouts, and a MUCH lower Slugging pctg.

Besides, I'm not sure if he can handle Boston.

I'd like to see Washburn's #'s against the Sox and Yanks. I bet they're awful.

SlushyBOB
12-10-2003, 01:01 PM
Kennedy doesn't have the offensive numbers that Walker did, but his defense is a little better. I think he'll do a decent job. He's also young and cheap!

And he didn't pitch against the Yankees last year. Maybe someone could help me out with that one.

Hey Babs, im here!

am im just as excited about A-Rod coming here as you are. Just the mere thought of him hitting a bizillion home runs + doubles every year is enough to convince me the WS is right around the corner.

for those of you still toying with the Washburn idea, Peter Gammons confirmed yesterday that the Red Sox have absolutely no interest in the Anaheim pitcher, so the point is moot. Additionally, my personal feelings is that Adam Kennedy is not significantly better than Damian Jackson, so Theo would lose all his "genius" status if he traded Nomar for this guy.

I would LOVE to see us work out a scenario to keep both Nomar and Alex, because that would just be too unreal. And since it probly won't happen, we should at LEAST consider putting Mueller at 2B, because any 3B we get will probly be a better hitter and all around player than Kennedy. Plus, Damian isn't an everyday player, IMO.

finally, for those of you who feel like losing Manny AND Nomar just for A-Rod, try to look at it with the glass half full.

Nomar-Manny-John Burkett, 2003......A-Rod-Schilling-(whoever we get for Nomar), 2004.

is it looking a little better now???

im with you all the way Babs. i love Nomar in Beantown, but its clear Manny won't be back under any circumstances, so Nomar is unlucky. Whether I want it to happen isnt the same as WHAT IS BEST FOR THE TEAM, BOTH ON THE FIELD AND OFF, right now.

and i will be sad to see Nomar leave town, if he does, but the fact that he turned down $15 mil a year last season doesn't make me feel so bad.

That does look pretty good. I do agree with Princess that we will not be able to replace Manny's bat with a comparable one (imagine what that would cost us). However, A-Rod gives us better offensive numbers that either of those guys with better defense and I don't even have to comment on the Schilling/Burkett swap. Whoever we get for Nomar will fill a void in the lineup, but the addition of A-Rod and Schilling make up for part of that loss.

Of course, all of this is moot until an A-Rod deal is finalized.

Thanks for the post, BoSox! :)

Bob, your A-Rod ban has been lifted due to the "concreteness" of the rumors. Since both parties obviously have confirmed the discussion, we are allowed to talk about it.

If Foulke does not sign with the Red Sox, he should at least pay Theo for the $150 ticket or whatever it was. That little expense results in higher Sox ticket prices. :D

I have mixed feelings on the whole A-Rod and Manny trade and with Nomar having to leave town. In a way, having A-Rod in town would be cool, but I don't think losing Manny and Nomar is worth it. Honestly, I can't say that I'm excited at all. :( Well, not yet, that is.

Though, I'm excited with the idea knowing Schilling will be pitching for us this year, and I can't wait to see him on the mound. I'm also hoping and praying that we get Foulke. I think we'll have a pretty good bullpen if we land him as well.
