Put it this way: With Alex Rodriguez seemingly on his way to Fenway, would Steinbrenner see and raise the Sox by signing Guerrero? Impossible, you say? Perhaps. Everyone seems to think Guerrero is headed to the Orioles, anyway - a payoff to owner Pete Angelos, the conspiracy-theorists say, for allowing the Expos to move to Washington in 2005.

If you've been following the dots this winter, then you've seen how the market for one of the best players in baseball has, incredibly, shrunk to a market of one - the Baltimore Orioles.

The Dodgers, Braves and Mets are desperate for outfield offense but are swearing off Guerrero out of payroll concerns. The only other moneyed team in the market is the Angels who, in Arturo Moreno, have a new, free-spending owner.

But with Selig's help, the Red Sox and Rangers are moving toward consummating the Alex Rodriguez-for-Manny Ramirez deal that will save $80 million for Texas owner Tom Hicks and deliver the best player in the game to Boston. The offshoot of the deal is that the Red Sox will then ship Nomar Garciaparra to Anaheim, effectively taking the Angels out of the Guerrero market. Thus - however inadvertently - MLB is able to deliver Guerrero to Peter Angelos in Baltimore at a reasonable price, with no draft pick compensation, pacifying him and fortifying the Orioles while efforts continue to relocate the Montreal Expos to Washington, D.C.
