By Jon Heyman:...The hated Red Sox finally solved their long-running closer problem by signing Keith Foulke. And in a much more severe personal blow to the Yankees, indications are growing stronger that Roger Clemens will join buddy Pettitte and pitch for the Astros.
...The Nightmare in New Orleans is only beginning for George Steinbrenner's Yankees, who are growing more expensive and less likable by the day. While that Yankees suit tried to dirty up the unfailingly-honest Pettitte with the lame conspiracy theory that Pettitte's people were in cahoots with Houston, the Yankees are seconds away from finalizing their own unholy alliance with Gary Sheffield after finalizing their megabucks trade for Kevin Brown, both flagship members of the All-Greenbacks team.
Instead of dirtying up their squeaky- clean former star with incredible theories, the Yankees need to clean up their own mess.
...One positive about getting Sheffield: Now that they'll be teammates, he and Jason Giambi can car pool to future steroid inquiries. :rolling
While the Yankees keep spinning (and spinning their wheels), the hated Red Sox are methodically turning themselves into a strong AL East favorite. Theo Epstein & Co. officially ditched the nonsensical closer-by-committee brainstorm by signing Foulke. That deal means they can use Scott Williamson or Byung-Hyun Kim as trade bait for a second baseman if they don't acquire one when they unload perennial malcontent Nomar Garciaparra.
...The Yankees have gall, as they are the masters of deceptive deals. It was they who waited to announce the agreements with Sheffield, Tom Gordon and Paul Quantrill until after Dec. 7, just so they could avoid rightfully surrendering draft choices.
With their fractured, top-heavy front-office setup, the overconfident Yankees took their eye off the ball here. What's worse, they need to brace for a double hit now. Clemens knows the score; he knows the Yankees underappreciated Pettitte and overemphasized Pettitte's elbow problem.
The guess here is Clemens joins Pettitte. The way this offseason is going, there could be no other ending. Emphasis (and editorial smilies) mine.
Schadenfreude -- it's a beautiful thing. :D
