Everett agrees to contract with Expos
NEW ORLEANS -- All-Star outfielder Carl Everett agreed Monday to a contract with the Montreal Expos that guarantees him $7.5 million over the next two seasons, The Associated Press reports.
Everett, 33, hit .287 last season with 28 homers and 92 RBI for the Texas Rangers after they acquired him from the Chicago White Sox on July 1.
His contract with the Expos calls for a $3 million salary in 2004. Everett has a $4 million player option for 2005. If he exercises it, Montreal would get a $5 million team option for 2006 with a $500,000 buyout.
He earned $9.15 million last season, when he became an All-Star for the second time.
Everett is a .278 career hitter in 11 frequently turbulent seasons, including stints with the Florida Marlins, New York Mets, Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox.
Tampa Bay also made an offer to Everett last week.
Montreal needed an outfielder to replace Vladimir Guerrero, who became a free agent. The Expos didn't offer him salary arbitration Dec. 7, meaning he cannot re-sign with Montreal until May 1.
Everett was an All-Star his first season in Boston after being traded from Houston, hitting .300 with 34 homers and 108 RBI in 2000. But he was also suspended for 10 days after he exploded in fury and head-butted umpire Ron Kulpa.
After numerous arguments with Red Sox managers Jimy Williams and Joe Kerrigan, Everett was traded to Texas at the 2001 winter meetings.
